To use a DeFi app on Stellar, you need a wallet that supports the app’s Stellar and Soroban transactions, the asset you plan to use, and the app’s verified website. Connect the wallet, inspect the action and its terms, then sign only if you understand what the transaction will do. Stellar DeFi includes swaps, liquidity pools, lending, and borrowing; each carries different risks, and neither a wallet nor an audit guarantees that funds are safe.
What does DeFi on Stellar mean?
Stellar is a network for digital assets and payments. Its smart-contract platform is called Soroban. DeFi apps use Soroban contracts to provide services such as exchanging assets, pooling liquidity, or lending and borrowing. Wallets let users manage keys and authorize transactions; oracles can provide price information to contracts; block explorers let users inspect on-chain activity.
These pieces work together, but they do different jobs. A wallet authorizes an action; it does not decide whether an app is trustworthy. An oracle can affect how a contract behaves without holding your funds. An explorer can show transaction activity, but it does not certify an app as safe.
Which DeFi action do you want to take?
Before connecting a wallet, identify the specific action you intend to take. The app’s terms, costs, and risks depend on the activity and the particular contract or market.

How to use a Stellar DeFi app

Choose a compatible wallet
Stellar describes wallets as apps or devices for managing private keys, holding assets, and sending payments. Its wallet directory lists Vesseo, Lobstr, and Ledger Live, but a directory listing does not establish that a wallet supports every Soroban app or transaction type. Confirm compatibility for the specific contract interaction you intend to make. If using a hardware wallet, verify both device and app support before relying on it.

Find and verify the app
Start from an official project or ecosystem source rather than an advertisement, search result, or unsolicited message. Check the domain carefully and confirm it is the intended app before connecting. There is no single canonical, current user-level directory of verified DeFi app URLs established here, so do not assume that a familiar app name identifies the correct site.

Prepare the asset and amount
Confirm that the wallet holds the exact asset the app requires and that the app supports it. Begin only with an amount you can afford to lose. For lending or borrowing, decide how much collateral you can commit and how you would meet repayment obligations; for a pool, understand both assets you will contribute.

Connect, but treat signing as a separate decision
A connection lets an app interact with your wallet; it is not the same as approving a particular transaction. Read each wallet prompt before signing. Check the contract or action, token, amount, permissions, and any displayed fees or collateral terms. Do not sign a prompt you cannot interpret. A signed transaction is not automatically undone just because you disconnect the wallet or close the app.

Review the terms for the action
For a swap, compare the quoted output, route, fees, and price impact. For liquidity, review pool composition and how the pool’s share or incentive mechanics work. For a lending or borrowing market, inspect the interest-rate mechanics, collateral factor, liquidation threshold, oracle, and repayment terms. These parameters differ by app and market; do not infer them from another protocol.

Check the transaction afterward
Keep a record of what you submitted. Use a block explorer to check the transaction’s status and on-chain details. An explorer can help you verify what was submitted and confirmed; it cannot reverse a transaction or establish that the protocol is safe.

What should you check before depositing funds?
Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) security guidance puts the limitation plainly: “Audits are necessary but not sufficient.” Treat an audit as a review of particular code at a particular time, not a promise about future safety. Before committing funds, look for evidence that the deployed version matches the reviewed code and that reported issues were addressed.
- Audit and code: Look for a published report by a qualified auditor, identify the code version it covers, check whether production code changed afterward, and see whether findings were remediated.
- Disclosure and response: Check for a public vulnerability-disclosure policy and bug-bounty program, and read the app’s risk information if available.
- Admin and governance powers: Find out whether privileged keys or governance decisions can change contract behavior, pause activity, or otherwise affect users.
- Price and oracle risk: Identify whether an app depends on an oracle for prices or other data. Faulty or manipulated prices can affect contract behavior.
- Liquidity and liquidation risk: Consider whether a pool or lending market could lack liquidity when users want to exit, and how concentrated collateral or market stress could affect liquidations.
- Dependencies: Check for reliance on bridges or off-chain services, which can add failure points beyond the contract itself.
- Economic design: Look for clear explanations of the protocol’s economic assumptions and stress analysis. SDF recommends stress modeling and documented review of economic parameters; those practices are questions to ask, not a guarantee of safety.
SDF also gives a protocol-level directional benchmark: setting aside approximately 5% of total user-facing liabilities as a first-loss resource. This is the Foundation’s suggested benchmark, not an industry-wide standard, a user guarantee, or proof that any particular app holds such reserves.

What a wallet can—and cannot—protect
A wallet helps manage access credentials and authorize transactions. A hardware wallet may strengthen key custody, but it does not protect a deposit from a smart-contract exploit, market losses, poor liquidity, oracle problems, or a malicious app interface. The wallet directory’s inclusion of Ledger Live does not confirm current model-by-model support for every Soroban interaction, so verify compatibility for your intended use.
What changes and must be checked directly?
App domains, deployed contract addresses, wallet support, available assets, fees, liquidity, rates, and local access rules can change. The official Stellar and SDF materials checked on October 4, 2026 support a general explanation, not a live recommendation for a particular protocol or country. Check current app documentation and terms, the deployed contract and audit version, and your jurisdiction’s access rules before using a specific service. No current yield, app address, or location eligibility should be assumed from this guide.
