Radio telescopes do not capture audible sound traveling through space. They detect radio waves—electromagnetic energy—which receivers turn into electrical measurements that can be recorded, analyzed, or converted into audio. So when you hear what Jupiter “sounds like,” you are hearing a human-made representation of radio data, not sound that crossed the vacuum.

What a radio telescope detects

Radio waves are part of the electromagnetic spectrum, like visible light, but with longer wavelengths. Unlike sound, which requires a material medium such as air to travel, electromagnetic waves can cross the vacuum between planets and stars. A radio telescope gathers this incoming energy so astronomers can study it.

A conventional radio also receives electromagnetic radio waves. Its electronics convert the received signal into an electrical signal that drives a speaker, producing mechanical vibrations we hear as sound. Astronomy recordings follow a similar general idea, but the audio is a playback or translation of measurements—not a microphone recording of space.

How radio telescopes turn signals into data

  1. Collect radio energy. A dish receives waves from a direction in the sky and focuses them toward a receiver, much as an optical mirror gathers visible light. Other systems use multiple antenna elements instead of one large dish.
  2. Amplify and filter the signal. The receiver processes the weak electrical signal associated with the incoming radio energy, amplifying it and filtering out parts of the signal that are not needed. NASA Radio JOVE summarizes a basic system as an antenna, receiver, and recorder: NASA Radio JOVE’s introduction to radio astronomy.
  3. Record and analyze measurements. Receivers and computers preserve the data for analysis. Astronomers can examine it in forms such as plots, spectra, images, or time-frequency spectrograms. A spectrogram shows how signal strength varies across frequency and time; Radio JOVE describes software that displays observations this way.
  4. Combine antennas when needed. Observations from multiple antennas can be combined to improve the sharpness of a radio image. The result depends on the observing system and how its antennas are arranged.
  5. Convert data to audio if useful. A signal may be sent to a speaker, or data values may be mapped to pitches, volume, or other sound qualities. That process is called sonification. NASA describes sonification as translating astronomical data into sounds, including musical notes: NASA’s explanation of data sonification.

What does Jupiter sound like?

Jupiter does not make audible sound that travels through the vacuum to Earth. Radio emissions associated with Jupiter can be received by a suitable radio telescope, recorded as data, and rendered as audio. The resulting clip can help people notice changes or patterns in the measurements, but its sound depends on the recording and the way the data is played or sonified.

That distinction applies to other astronomical audio, too: the sound is a way to represent radio observations for human listeners. It does not mean an observer in space would hear the same thing through the vacuum.

What can a radio signal tell astronomers?

Natural objects produce radio emissions, and radio astronomy uses those emissions to investigate objects and their properties. SETI searches look for radio or other electromagnetic patterns that might be non-random and potentially technological. NASA’s historical account traces the modern SETI era to the work of Frank Drake and the Cocconi–Morrison proposal around 1959–1960; it describes searching for patterns such as radio or television waves: NASA History Office’s account of SETI.

A pattern that attracts attention is a candidate for further study, not proof of extraterrestrial life. Astronomers need to investigate whether it is repeatable and whether a human-made source could explain it.

Why interference matters in SETI searches

Earth-based technology also uses radio waves, so a telescope can detect signals that have nothing to do with distant astronomical sources. Automated processing helps identify and discard likely human-made interference, but the figures depend on the project being described.

For example, NASA’s page about the USC SETI citizen-science project says it observes thousands of stars and reports 5 million signal detections per hour. The same page says automated processing can discard 99.5% of those detections as human-made. These figures describe that project, not a universal detection rate or rejection rate for every SETI search: NASA’s overview of searching for life in the universe.

Radio astronomy in practice

Karl Jansky detected radio emissions from the Milky Way in 1932, helping establish that the sky could be studied using radio waves as well as visible light. NASA’s account places that milestone in the history of radio astronomy: NASA’s account of the search for life.

For a hands-on educational example, NASA Radio JOVE documents a project with antennas, receiver hardware, and software for viewing observations as spectrograms. Its project page reports a 2025 hardware update: the RSP1A was replaced by the RSP1B for the Radio JOVE 2.1 software-defined radio system, with an intermediary software change required. Because hardware and software compatibility can change, check the current project instructions before assembling a setup: NASA Radio JOVE project information.
