Start with the exact set number
Once a set is no longer manufactured, buying it is generally a secondary-market transaction. Identify the set by both name and set number before comparing offers; names can be similar, while the number helps you confirm that listings are for the same set. Use sold prices as a reference, not asking prices
A seller’s asking price shows what they hope to receive, not necessarily what buyers have paid. Check recent completed sales for the exact set and compare examples in a similar condition. Historical figures illustrate why a set-specific comparison matters, but they are not current valuations. In a 2023 report, eBay gave selected LEGO sets’ average prices in its 2019–2022 dataset as ranging from around AUD $200 to around AUD $2,100. The LEGO Grand Carousel 10196 averaged AUD $1,700 in 2019 and AUD $2,100 in 2022; Kings Castle averaged AUD $200 and AUD $600 in those years, respectively. Compare like condition with like condition
Keep sealed or new listings separate from used ones. A sealed set may command a collector premium that does not benefit someone who simply wants to build the model. For used listings, read the condition notes and confirm whether the set is complete, whether instructions are included, and whether packaging matters to you. Do not treat “complete” as established unless the listing says so clearly and you are comfortable with the seller’s evidence.

- For a used set, look for a clear statement about completeness, instructions, and condition.
- Ask about missing pieces or damage if the listing leaves an important detail unclear.
Calculate the delivered cost
Compare the total you will pay, not just the item price. Shipping can erase the apparent saving on a cheaper listing. If you are buying parts from several sellers, include each order’s shipping; consolidating a parts purchase may reduce delivery costs, but it is not guaranteed to make the parts route cheaper overall. Choose a used set or parts route if you mainly want to build
A used complete set or a set assembled from separate parts may suit a builder who does not need sealed packaging. Before choosing parts, identify what is missing and estimate replacement-part costs, shipping, and the number of orders involved. Availability and total cost vary by set, so compare that estimate with a used complete copy before committing. This route is a possibility, not a guarantee of savings.
