To check a Stellar DeFi protocol before connecting your wallet, verify the site and intended network, identify the exact contract and function, and understand what the wallet is asking you to authorize. Where possible, simulate the proposed Soroban call and inspect its results—but treat simulation as a preview, not proof that a protocol is safe. A wallet connection, ecosystem listing, or audit label alone does not establish that a project’s code, deployment, governance, or economics are trustworthy.
How do I check a Stellar DeFi protocol before connecting my wallet?
Start with the specific action you intend to take, not just the protocol’s name. A DeFi interface may involve multiple contracts and operations. You need to establish which network, contract, function, and arguments are involved before approving an action.
- Confirm the site and network. Reach the project site through a source you trust, such as the project’s established documentation—not an unsolicited message or ad. Confirm that the site and wallet show the network you intended. Stellar Lab’s Contract Explorer also has a network selector, but that feature does not authenticate a project’s website or verify its deployed contract. Stellar Lab Contract Explorer
- Identify the contract and function. Find the contract ID and function for the action you plan to take. Compare them with the project’s documentation and trustworthy independent references. A familiar protocol name does not prove that a contract ID belongs to that project or is the intended deployment.
- Understand the arguments. Check which addresses, assets, amounts, and other parameters the operation uses. Confirm that they match your intended action.
- Read the wallet prompt before approving. Check the operation and the details the wallet exposes. If the prompt is opaque, contains unexpected details, or does not match what you initiated, do not sign until you understand it.
- Simulate the call where possible. Use a reliable tool that exposes the proposed contract invocation, then inspect the simulation output before deciding whether to proceed.
These checks help you understand a proposed interaction; they cannot establish that a protocol is safe for you. No particular protocol or deployment is evaluated here.
What does Soroban authorization mean?
In Stellar’s documentation, authorization is about deciding which operations an account permits; authentication is about proving identity or control. In other words, authorization concerns what an operation is allowed to do, rather than who is presenting the request. Stellar Developers: Authorization

Signing an authorization is not a general endorsement of a protocol. Assess the actual operation and its details. Stellar’s signing guide distinguishes transaction signing from signing authorization entries and says transaction signing is intended for accounts that fully trust the transaction source and know how to thoroughly verify its authenticity and security. It recommends enforcement-mode simulation to validate signatures and execution before submission. Stellar Developers: Signing
Can I simulate a Stellar smart-contract transaction before submitting it?
Yes. The Stellar RPC method simulateTransaction can simulate a contract invocation without submitting it. Its response can include effective transaction data, required authorizations, and a minimal resource fee. The RPC reference describes simulation of a single invokeHostFunction transaction and lists authorization modes including enforce, record, and record_allow_nonroot. The reference page was last updated Aug. 19, 2025; check the live documentation for current behavior and field details. Stellar RPC: simulateTransaction

Simulate in Stellar Lab
Stellar Lab’s Contract Explorer guides you through choosing a network, entering a contract and function, providing parameters, and simulating the call. Use the displayed result and fee information to understand the proposed invocation; do not treat a successful simulation as a safety assessment. Stellar Lab Contract Explorer
Know whether the call reads or writes
Stellar Lab’s guidance distinguishes read operations, which do not change contract state, from write operations, which do. A read does not need to be submitted merely to inspect its result. Submit a write only when you intend to make the state change it represents. Stellar Lab Contract Explorer

Why simulation is not a guarantee
Simulation runs against a temporary ledger snapshot. Ledger state may change before you submit, making the simulated footprint stale and the later result different. Simulation can help clarify the proposed transaction, but it does not prove that a protocol is benign, audited, correctly governed, or suitable for your situation. Stellar Developers: Soroban RPC
How should I assess a protocol’s audit claims?
Do not treat an audit badge or a claim that a project was audited as verification by itself. Look for the actual report and establish what it covers:

- The named reviewing organization and a published report.
- The contracts, versions, and scope examined.
- Whether the deployed contract matches the version and scope in the report.
- Any stated findings and remediation, interpreted in the context of the report.
An audit is evidence about a defined review, not a guarantee of safety. The protocol’s administrators, upgrade powers, governance, economics, and deployment also matter, and must be checked separately. No audit evidence for a named protocol is established here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should I stop instead of signing?
Pause if you cannot match the wallet prompt to the action you intended, cannot establish which contract or network is involved, or cannot understand the parameters being authorized. Do not sign an opaque or unexpected request simply because the site looks familiar, the simulation succeeded, or the project displays an audit claim.
