To enlarge 8-bit game graphics without changing their look, use nearest-neighbor scaling; to make selected edges appear smoother, compare a pattern-aware filter such as xBRZ or HQx. Neither approach is universally best: the result depends on the game’s artwork, the scale factor, the display, and the tool doing the rendering.
What depixelizing pixel art does
Upscaling enlarges a game image or texture so it can be viewed at a larger size. It does not recover detail that was absent from the original. Instead, a scaler decides how the source pixels map to the larger output.
There are two broad approaches. Nearest-neighbor repeats source pixels, retaining crisp, block-shaped boundaries. Pattern-aware filters inspect neighboring pixels and adjust selected transitions to produce smoother-looking contours. The paper “Depixelizing Pixel Art” examines reconstruction against nearest-neighbor and specialized pixel-art methods; Libretro’s shader guide also distinguishes simple scaling from pattern-recognizing filters.
Smoothing is a visual interpretation, not a guaranteed restoration of the artist’s intended image. A filter may round a diagonal or soften a contour, but it can also alter deliberate pixel shapes or small details. Treat the nearest-neighbor result as a useful baseline when judging whether those changes help.

The table compares practical trade-offs, not measured rankings: the available sources do not establish a universal winner, benchmark results across hardware, or a common performance measure for these different workflows.
Why integer scaling and alignment matter
Suppose a source pixel is enlarged by an integer factor: each original pixel can occupy a consistent whole-number block in the output. This makes the mapping predictable and helps preserve the pixel grid. A display size that does not fit an integer multiple may require a compromise, such as borders or a second scaling pass.

At a non-integer scale, a simple nearest-neighbor sampler can land on boundaries between source texels. Without suitable alignment, neighboring output samples may select source pixels unevenly. Libretro’s guidance discusses aligning samples to the pixel grid or using integer scaling before a later scaling pass. The right choice depends on the rendering pipeline; “nearest-neighbor” alone does not guarantee uniform-looking output at every display size.
Choose the right workflow
For a saved screenshot or image
Use an offline image workflow when the goal is to create an enlarged file. The xBRZ CLI is documented for this use and supports 2× through 6× factors. Compare its result with nearest-neighbor at the same intended output size; select the version that best preserves the details and shapes you care about.

For live emulator output
Use an emulator’s available scaling or shader options when you want the effect during play. HQx presets are intended for compatible emulators, while PPSSPP documents texture scaling among its graphics settings. These are not interchangeable workflows: a shader processes rendered game output, whereas an offline utility processes an image file. Check the chosen emulator’s compatibility and setup requirements rather than assuming a preset works everywhere.

- Start with the unfiltered or nearest-neighbor image. This shows the original pixel shapes at the target size and gives you a reference for judging changes.
- Keep the comparison fair. Use the same game scene, output dimensions, and display conditions when comparing a pattern-aware filter with the baseline.
- Inspect more than large outlines. Look closely at small sprites, text, thin lines, and one-pixel details. A smoother contour may come at the cost of shapes that were intentionally drawn on the pixel grid.
- Check how the output fits the display. Prefer integer scaling when a clean pixel grid is the priority. If the screen requires a non-integer fit, check whether the emulator or shader handles pixel-grid alignment.
- Test runtime performance in the actual implementation. Do not infer the cost of one emulator’s texture-scaling feature from another tool. PPSSPP specifically warns that its CPU-based texture scaling can have a substantial impact.
Choose nearest-neighbor when fidelity to the original grid matters most. Choose a pattern-aware option only when its smoother edges look better on the actual game without damaging details you want to preserve. If neither compromise is acceptable, keep the original pixel scale or use integer scaling with unused screen space rather than forcing a poor fit.
