A Nerf ammo counter and a range finder do different jobs. A counter detects darts as they leave the blaster; a range sensor estimates the distance to an object in front of it. Neither function automatically tells you how many darts remain in a magazine or whether a dart can reach a target. Documented builds combine these functions, while ready-made dart counters offer another option if their mount fits your blaster.

What an ammo counter and range finder actually measure

A dart counter uses a sensor near the muzzle to register darts passing out of the blaster. A range sensor points forward and estimates distance to objects in its field of view. These measurements are separate: a distance reading is not a dart-flight prediction, and counting outgoing darts is not the same as sensing magazine contents.

In one Raspberry Pi prototype, a forward-facing ultrasonic sensor estimated target distance while a proximity sensor near the muzzle detected fired darts. The project used a Rainbow HAT for display and LED feedback. The write-up describes the setup at Adafruit’s Nerf gun rangefinder and ammo counter project; Hackaday also reported the build and its counting limitation in 2017 at Hackaday.

Does it know how many darts are left in the magazine?

Not necessarily. The Raspberry Pi build counted darts fired; it did not read the magazine. To keep a remaining-round display meaningful, the user had to enter a starting count or reset the counter after reloading. That approach can work, but it depends on the user remembering the reset and entering the right capacity.

A separate Arduino project takes a different approach to displaying remaining rounds. Its setup asks the user to configure clip capacity and dart length, and it uses an IR emitter and detector to register darts. The project documents an Arduino Pro Mini 328p (5V, 16 MHz), an SSD1306 OLED, three buttons, and a battery-voltage divider; the display includes remaining rounds, voltage, FPS, and RPM. Its author reports testing an OPL550 detector with an OP240a emitter at about one-inch spacing. Those are details of that build, not proof that the same sensor arrangement works equally well with every blaster or dart. See the Arduino project repository.

A counter that directly senses a magazine follower or its contents could avoid manual reload resets, but the documented Pi build does not validate a magazine-sensing implementation. Suggestions in its comments should be treated as ideas rather than tested instructions.

DIY and ready-made options compared

Approach What it detects or displays What to consider
Raspberry Pi, ultrasonic sensor, proximity sensor Estimates distance in front of the blaster and counts darts passing the muzzle; the documented build uses a Rainbow HAT for feedback. Counts fired darts rather than magazine contents, so reloading requires a reset or manual count entry. See the project write-up.
Arduino Pro Mini with IR emitter/detector Tracks rounds using an IR dart sensor and displays remaining rounds, voltage, FPS, and RPM on an OLED. Requires configured clip capacity and dart length. The reported sensor spacing and parts are author-specific build details. See the project repository.
Ready-made dart counter Retail listings describe counters with features such as dart counting, rechargeable power, magazine presets, or alerts. Features are seller claims, not independent reliability results. Confirm the current compatibility list and mounting style before purchase. Examples of listings include NerfGunAttachments and Etsy.

The reviewed project descriptions and product listings do not provide controlled accuracy comparisons or outdoor-condition testing, so there is no evidence here to rank ultrasonic, proximity, and IR sensors as universally best.

How to choose a setup

  • Decide what you need to know. If the question is how many darts you fired, a muzzle counter may be enough. If you need the remaining magazine count, check whether the system senses the magazine directly or relies on a reset and known starting capacity.
  • Check sensor placement and blaster fit. Dart sensors sit where darts pass the muzzle; range sensors need a forward-facing view. For a ready-made unit, verify whether it attaches to a Nerf rail, a Picatinny-style rail, a barrel, or a muzzle-brake mount, and confirm compatibility with your specific blaster and dart type. Retail listings describe different mounting options, but compatibility is model-specific.
  • Match the build to your skills and power needs. The documented DIY examples require electronics and setup: the Pi project uses a Raspberry Pi and display hardware, while the Arduino build specifies a microcontroller, sensor, OLED, buttons, and battery-voltage divider. Consider whether you are comfortable wiring, configuring, and maintaining those components.
  • Check the display and reload workflow. Determine whether the counter has physical controls, capacity presets, or a reload reset, and whether its display shows only shots or additional data. A display labelled “remaining” is only useful if the starting capacity and reload behavior match how you play.
  • Treat vendor feature lists as claims. Confirm current availability, stated features, and the seller’s compatibility information directly before buying; the listings do not establish independent accuracy or reliability.

Safety and limits

Follow the instructions for your specific blaster. Hasbro’s N-Strike Elite Firestrike instructions say, “CAUTION: Do not aim at eyes or face,” and instruct users to use only darts designed for that product, not modify darts or the blaster, and clear the play area of obstructions. The same page gives the Firestrike’s light-beam targeting claim as 15 feet and its dart-launch claim as 75 feet; those are manufacturer statements for that model, not general rangefinder specifications or independent measurements. See Hasbro’s Firestrike instructions.
