Aldi was cheaper overall in two recent local grocery-basket comparisons, but neither establishes a nationwide winner. In Salina, Kansas, a September 2026 ten-item basket cost $23.70 at Aldi and $25.17 at Walmart. In Bentonville, Arkansas, a 30-item comparison checked March 11, 2026, found Aldi’s total 1.74% lower, even with Walmart rollbacks included. Your result depends on your shopping list, nearby stores, product matches and promotions.

What the recent basket comparisons found

The clearest evidence comes from two local comparisons with different baskets and promotion rules. They point in the same direction on total cost, but their results should not be treated as a price guarantee for other locations or shopping trips.

Comparison Basket and method Reported result
Salina, Kansas, September 2026 (Salina311) Ten items: milk, eggs, bread, bananas, ground beef, chicken breast, flour, sugar, peanut butter and rice. Package sizes were normalized; sales, coupons and loyalty promotions were excluded. Aldi: $23.70. Walmart: $25.17. Aldi had the lowest normalized price on seven items; Walmart on three. Salina311’s comparison
Bentonville, Arkansas, March 11, 2026 (Talk Business & Politics) Thirty similar products at Walmart store No. 100 and a nearby Aldi. Great Value and other private brands were used to approximate Aldi’s largely private-label assortment; Walmart rollbacks were included. Aldi’s basket was 1.74% lower, despite $1.33 in Walmart rollback savings. Walmart won the beverage category when soda rollbacks were counted. Talk Business & Politics’ comparison

The Salina figures describe that specific basket and market, not what a typical household will spend. The Bentonville result likewise reflects one local basket; its rollback-inclusive total is not directly interchangeable with a regular-shelf-price comparison.

Item-level prices do not always follow the basket winner

In Salina, Walmart was cheaper on sugar, peanut butter and rice even though Aldi’s overall basket cost less. The 2026 Southeast reference sheet from Passionate Penny Pincher also shows mixed outcomes: listed Aldi bananas were $0.33 per pound versus Walmart’s $0.50, while hamburger buns were $1.55 at Aldi and $1.43 at Walmart. That sheet says prices vary by area, excludes weekly sales and coupons, and sometimes compares products or brands that are not identical, so those examples are not live quotes.

Older comparisons are context, not current prices

A 2025 comparison by The Kitchn reported lower Aldi prices on several listed matched items, including 12-count cage-free eggs ($3.49 versus $4.94), chicken breast ($3.89 per pound versus $4.77), 12-ounce almond butter ($3.39 versus $5.23) and same-size olive oil ($6.39 versus $7.14). These historical prices support the possibility of Aldi savings across categories, but should not be used as today’s price quotes.

Why the answer changes with your basket

Walmart’s promotions can shift a category

The Bentonville report counted $1.33 in Walmart rollback savings. It also found Walmart ahead in beverages when soda rollbacks were included; without those rollbacks, Aldi would have been cheaper in that category. A shelf-price-only comparison and a comparison of the prices available to you after offers answer different questions.

Similar-looking products may not be equivalent

Aldi’s assortment is primarily private label, while Walmart carries a broader mix. A fair comparison should match details such as product type, grade, brand or store-brand tier, organic status, package quantity and quality attributes. Consumers’ Checkbook says it modifies its market basket to account for brand differences when comparing stores.

Survey context does not prove Aldi-versus-Walmart savings

Consumers’ Checkbook identified Walmart among conventional supermarkets with consistently low prices in its surveyed markets. It reported that the discounters in that group were typically 12–30% below each area’s all-store average. That figure compares those retailers with local all-store averages; it is not a finding that Walmart costs 12–30% less than Aldi.

A WTOP report on Consumer Reports research describes comparisons against Walmart across six U.S. cities. The reported method used unit prices for bulk items at Costco and noted that some items were unavailable at certain stores. The available account does not establish a national Aldi-versus-Walmart winner.

How to compare prices for your own grocery list

  1. Start with your regular basket. List the groceries and quantities you actually buy. Counting which store wins the most items can mislead if the items you buy most often or in greatest quantity are different.
  2. Match the products as closely as possible. Compare type, grade, package quantity, organic status, quality attributes and brand tier. If one option is a national brand and the other a store brand, note that they may not be equivalent.
  3. Convert package prices to unit prices. Compare cost per ounce, pound, item or count, then calculate the cost for the same usable quantity. A lower sticker price can still mean a higher cost per unit when the package is smaller.
  4. Choose a promotion rule. Decide whether you want regular shelf prices or the amount you can pay after rollbacks, coupons or loyalty offers. Apply that rule consistently at both stores and check whether you qualify for each offer.
  5. Check nearby stores in the same week. Compare the stores you can realistically shop at and prices current for the same period. Published comparisons are snapshots, and the Southeast reference sheet explicitly warns that prices vary by area.
  6. Add up the matched basket. Total the cost of the same quantities, including any promotion you chose to count. The resulting figure answers which store is cheaper for that basket—not which one will always be cheaper.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you

  • Aldi had the lower total in the two cited recent local matched-basket comparisons.
  • Neither comparison establishes a permanent or nationwide price ranking.
  • Walmart can be the lower-priced choice for particular items or categories, and promotions may change the result.
  • To find your likely cheaper store, compare unit prices and the full cost of your own list at local stores under consistent promotion rules.
