Match the pool’s exact algorithm or variant to XMRig’s current support and configuration: XMRig’s CPU documentation says, “Original CryptoNight algorithm disabled by default.”
What does running XMRig in Docker mean?
Docker runs XMRig inside a container rather than installing the miner directly into the host operating system. The container still uses the host’s computing resources, so running it is appropriate only on hardware you own or are authorized to use.
XMRig describes itself as open-source, cross-platform mining software. Its documented backends include CPU mining, OpenCL for AMD GPUs, and CUDA for NVIDIA GPUs through an external plugin. The Docker image listing describes configuration controls for pool connection details, credentials, thread count, algorithm options, and CPU behavior. These are documented capabilities, not a guarantee that a particular command, image tag, pool, or setup will work unchanged.
Does XMRig still support CryptoNight?
XMRig documents multiple CryptoNight variants and related algorithm names, but “CryptoNight” alone is not enough to identify a compatible setup. The project’s algorithm list distinguishes among algorithms and variants; a pool may require a particular one. Check the pool’s current documentation and XMRig’s algorithm list, then configure the exact supported option rather than relying on an old tutorial or a label such as “universal.”

The pool may negotiate the algorithm, or its configuration may use a coin or algo option. Those choices are subject to XMRig’s documented constraints, so there is no single pool setting that applies to every service.
Why is original CryptoNight disabled by default?
XMRig’s CPU settings documentation states: “Original CryptoNight algorithm disabled by default.” Therefore, a configuration that requests the original algorithm may not work simply because it names CryptoNight. Check that the specific algorithm is enabled and supported in the miner configuration, and that it matches the pool’s requirement. Do not treat the word “universal” as a switch that enables compatibility.

How do I run XMRig in Docker?
Use the current xmrig/xmrig Docker Hub listing and XMRig documentation to choose a current image tag and confirm exact syntax. The image listing describes command-line controls, but this article does not provide a tested invocation; image contents, tags, and options can change.
- Confirm authorization and hardware. Decide whether to use the CPU or a supported GPU backend, and use only a machine whose resources you are allowed to use.
- Check the pool’s requirements. Record its current pool address, required credentials, and exact algorithm or variant. Confirm whether it expects algorithm negotiation or a specific
coinoralgosetting. - Choose configuration. The Docker image listing describes command-line settings for the algorithm, pool URL, username and password, thread count, algorithm variation, CPU affinity and priority, config file, and CPU-usage behavior. XMRig recommends a JSON configuration file as the more flexible, human-friendly approach; command-line options do not cover every feature, including profiles for different algorithms. See the XMRig miner documentation and verify the Docker image’s current syntax before starting a container.
- Start with conservative CPU settings. Configure a thread count and any CPU behavior deliberately rather than assuming a copied setting suits your hardware. If you use a CPU profile, treat it as machine-specific.
- Check startup and pool connection. Read the container’s output for configuration errors, algorithm mismatches, or connection failures. Compare what the miner reports with the pool’s current instructions; a running container alone does not establish that the requested algorithm is accepted.
Which configuration approach should you use?
| Approach | Useful when | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Command-line options | You need a small set of settings such as pool connection details, credentials, or thread count. | The Docker image listing documents these controls, but exact syntax and available options should be checked on the current listing. XMRig says command-line options do not cover every feature. |
| JSON configuration | You want a more flexible, human-friendly configuration or need features such as profiles for different algorithms. | XMRig recommends the JSON configuration file. Verify its current fields and how the current image expects the file to be supplied. |
What should you know about CPU profiles?
XMRig’s CPU documentation says generated profiles apply to the current CPU or CPUs and are not portable across different processors. It also warns that manually selecting an instruction implementation the CPU does not support can crash the miner. Use profiles for the machine they were generated on, and avoid forcing an instruction setting unless the processor supports it.

Is Dockerized mining safe and authorized?
Docker is a way to package and run software, not proof that a mining workload is authorized. Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 has reported attackers using Docker images for cryptojacking. Run a miner only with the owner’s informed permission, and investigate unexpected containers or sustained resource use rather than assuming they are legitimate. See Unit 42’s report on cryptojacking through Docker images.
