A standard USB cable will not connect to an HDMI port: USB and HDMI use different connector systems. The compatible exception is a USB-C source device that supports video output, connected to an HDMI display with a USB-C-to-HDMI cable or adapter. USB-C alone does not guarantee video support.
Can you plug a USB cable into an HDMI port?
No—not as a direct connection. USB and HDMI are separate connector systems, so a standard USB cable is not the right cable for an HDMI port. The USB Implementers Forum specifies USB Type-C as its own connector system in its USB Type-C Cable and Connector Specification.
Do not force a connector that does not fit. The available manufacturer guidance describes compatible connection paths, but it does not establish what damage might result from forcing a particular connector into a particular device.
Can USB-C connect to HDMI?
Yes, in one direction: from a USB-C device that supports video output to an HDMI display, such as a monitor or TV. HDMI Licensing describes HDMI Alt Mode as a way for HDMI-enabled source devices to connect directly to HDMI displays over USB-C. This does not turn an HDMI port into a USB port or let an HDMI display send USB data to a USB device.

USB-C ports do not all have the same capabilities. HDMI Licensing advises checking the device maker’s specifications for HDMI Alt Mode support. The VESA DisplayPort FAQ likewise says that its adapter path requires DisplayPort over USB-C support.
How to choose the right connection
- Check the source device. Look up the exact laptop, tablet, or phone model in the manufacturer’s documentation and confirm that its USB-C port supports video output. A USB-C connector by itself is not proof.
- Choose the right accessory and direction. For a compatible USB-C source and an HDMI display, use a USB-C-to-HDMI cable or adapter that provides HDMI output. If you need additional ports, consider a dock only after confirming it supports the required video mode.
- Verify display features. Check the accessory and device specifications for the resolution, refresh rate, and other display features you need. Support varies by manufacturer; HDMI Licensing notes that manufacturers choose which HDMI features their USB-C products support.
VESA distinguishes a dock, which may support video Alt Modes, from a USB hub, which does not. A hub should not be assumed to provide video simply because it has USB-C connectors.

USB cable, adapter, or dock: which should you use?
| Option | Use it when | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C-to-HDMI cable | You need a direct connection from a compatible USB-C video source to an HDMI display. | Confirm the source supports video over USB-C and the cable supports the display features you need. |
| USB-C-to-HDMI adapter | You want an adapter between a compatible USB-C video source and an HDMI display. | Confirm it provides HDMI output in the required direction and supports your target display features. |
| USB-C dock | You need video output along with additional ports. | Confirm the dock and host support the required video Alt Mode and display features. |
| USB hub | You need USB connectivity, not video Alt Mode through the hub. | VESA says a USB hub does not support video Alt Modes; do not select one as a video solution. |
These distinctions follow the connection guidance from HDMI Licensing and VESA. If the device maker does not confirm USB-C video output for your model, do not assume an adapter or cable will make it work.
