Avoid applying Amech SGT-4 thermal paste. An investigation by Igor’s Lab reported unusual behavior during heating and strong adhesion, while a later follow-up described user reports of copper discoloration and pitting, lost CPU markings, and odor. These accounts raise credible compatibility concerns, but they do not establish how often damage occurs or prove that every unit causes it.

Igor’s Lab’s 2024 test
In an investigation published October 16, 2024, and updated November 3, 2025, Igor Wallossek reported an unusual smell while warming SGT-4, atypical behavior during thermal testing, and strong adhesion after a heating cycle. Later reports from users
In an October 18, 2025 follow-up, Igor described reports from South Korean users of copper discoloration and pitting, erased CPU markings, and odor. Those accounts add concerning symptoms to the earlier test observations, but they are reported cases—not a measured failure rate or proof that all SGT-4 applications cause damage. What the symptoms do—and do not—establish
Odor, unusual thermal behavior, sticking, and reported discoloration or pitting are distinct observations. Taken together, they are enough to make SGT-4 a product to avoid; they do not establish the incidence of damage across all users, batches, or systems. No population-level failure statistic or independent replication was established in the cited coverage.
The proposed chemistry is not a confirmed complete formulation
Igor’s reporting discusses reactive silicone chemistry as a possible explanation for the reported symptoms. That is the investigator’s explanation, not a publicly established complete account of SGT-4’s formulation or a confirmed mechanism for every reported case. Tom’s Hardware also attributes the suspected mechanism to Igor’s investigation rather than presenting a separate chemical analysis.

What the safety data sheet says
The available SGT-4 safety data sheet, dated August 2022 (revision 002.0), lists treated alumina above 30%, treated aluminum above 30%, and polydimethylsiloxane below 25%. It calls the product non-hazardous and stable under recommended storage and handling, while stating that reactivity data are not available. The sheet does not disclose a complete formulation or demonstrate long-term compatibility at a heated CPU-and-cooler interface. Amech SGT-4 safety data sheet
A non-hazardous classification for the stated storage and handling conditions is not proof that a material is compatible with CPU heat spreaders or cooler contact surfaces. The reviewed sources do not establish SGT-4’s compatibility through a regulator or standards-body assessment.

What to do if you have SGT-4
If you have not applied it
Do not use it. Choose a thermal paste intended for CPU cooling from a product maker with clear documentation, and follow the application guidance for your cooler and processor.
If you have already applied it
- If the cooler separates normally during routine service, inspect the contact surfaces for visible discoloration or pitting.
- If the CPU and cooler appear stuck together, do not forcefully pull them apart. Seek careful, hardware-specific removal guidance from the cooler or computer maker, or a qualified repair professional.
- If you see surface damage, document it and contact the system, CPU, or cooler maker for advice. The cited reporting does not establish that cleaning or replacing the paste reverses corrosion or restores damaged markings.
The force-avoidance advice is a practical precaution, not a tested SGT-4 removal protocol. The available sources do not verify a particular solvent, tool, or cleanup method for this case.

What to use instead
Igor’s follow-up mentions Arctic MX-6, Noctua NT-H2, and Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut as alternatives users discussed. The cited reporting does not compare or test those products, so the names are examples rather than endorsements or proof of superior performance. Choose a suitable CPU thermal paste according to your hardware maker’s guidance; a replacement paste should not be treated as a repair for existing surface damage.
