Neither stock is an evidence-based universal winner. Intel is an execution-heavy turnaround thesis: investors need to believe it can improve product supply and manufacturing economics. AMD is a product-led growth thesis: investors need to believe it can sustain demand while securing capacity from outside manufacturing partners. The available operating results help compare those risks, but they do not establish which stock is the better buy at current prices.
What the latest reported results say—and what they do not
The periods differ: Intel’s latest reviewed filing covers the quarter ended June 27, 2026, while AMD’s figures below cover fiscal 2025, ended December 27, 2025. Treat the table as a snapshot of each company’s reported performance in its stated period, not a like-for-like growth ranking.
| Company and period | Reported revenue and growth | Other reported results |
|---|---|---|
| Intel, Q2 2026 | Consolidated revenue: $16.128 billion for the quarter. | Intel Foundry revenue: $5.765 billion, including $5.5 billion in intersegment revenue and $293 million in external revenue. Intel Foundry operating loss: $2.089 billion. |
| AMD, fiscal 2025 | Total revenue: $34.6 billion, up 34% year over year. Data Center: $16.6 billion, up 32%; Client and Gaming: $14.6 billion, up 51%; Embedded: $3.5 billion, down 3%. | Gross margin: 50%, versus 49% in fiscal 2024. Operating income: $3.7 billion; net income: $4.3 billion; diluted EPS: $2.65. These are company-reported fiscal-year results, not forecasts. |

The segment figures need context. Intel says substantially all Intel Foundry activity still supports its own manufacturing; its segment revenue therefore should not be read as the revenue of a scaled outside-customer foundry business. AMD’s 2025 growth shows what the company reported for that year, but does not establish that the pace will continue, that its market share will rise, or that AI demand will translate into durable margins.

How the manufacturing models change the investment case
| Question | Intel | AMD |
|---|---|---|
| Where are chips made? | Intel combines chip design with its own manufacturing and is also building its foundry business. | AMD relies on third-party manufacturers for integrated circuits and outside partners for assembly, testing, marking, and packaging. |
| What could work in its favor? | If Intel improves manufacturing execution and utilization, internal production could support its product business and improve foundry economics. Meaningful external foundry activity could add another source of business over time. | Using external manufacturing partners gives AMD access to their capacity and scale without requiring it to build the same in-house manufacturing base. |
| What could go wrong? | Process execution, manufacturing costs, capital demands, and foundry losses may remain difficult to overcome; supply constraints can also limit products Intel could otherwise sell. | AMD depends on partner capacity, packaging, and other parts of the supply chain. Constraints or delays there could limit its ability to meet demand. |
These are different exposures, not a simple safer-versus-riskier distinction. Intel bears more direct manufacturing execution and investment risk. AMD avoids owning the same manufacturing footprint, but depends on outside partners to deliver critical capacity and services. Each model can be an advantage under favorable conditions and a constraint under adverse ones.
Intel: the turnaround thesis and its tests
Demand is not the same as available sales
Intel’s Q2 2026 filing says demand exceeded available supply in client and server markets because of internal supply constraints, and that it expected industry-wide constraints to persist into the following year. Server volume rose 9% year over year while average selling prices rose 48%; Intel attributed the price increase primarily to a richer premium-product mix and, to a lesser extent, demand-based pricing. Client revenue also benefited from a higher premium-product mix, even as client volume fell 8% year over year. Those are company-reported explanations, not independent forecasts.

- Max. Boost Clock : Up to 5.7 GHz; Base Clock: 4.3 GHz
- Form Factor: Desktops , Boxed Processor
- Architecture: Zen 5; Former Codename: Granite Ridge AM5
For the bullish case, constrained supply may mean Intel has demand it cannot yet fully serve. The key test is whether it can turn that demand into sustained product shipments and competitive products, rather than relying on favorable mix or pricing while unit volumes remain limited. Investors should watch both volume and mix: price increases alone do not show that the underlying supply or competitiveness problem is solved.
Foundry progress must be judged by economics, not scale alone
Intel Foundry’s operating loss narrowed from $3.168 billion in Q2 2025 to $2.089 billion in Q2 2026. Intel attributed much of the year-over-year comparison to lower period charges, including the absence of prior-year asset impairment and accelerated depreciation charges. The improvement is not, on its own, evidence of sustainable profitability; investors need to see better underlying economics and, for an external foundry thesis, meaningful outside-customer business.

Intel’s January 2026 earnings-call comments described AI, client and data-center products, and a U.S. foundry as priorities. Management said, “This will not happen overnight, and our execution needs to continue to improve.” It also said it was encouraged by progress in 18A yields while identifying further improvement and a high-volume ramp as work still in progress. These are management’s own statements, not an independent assessment of the probability of success. Intel Q4 2025 earnings-call comments.
The Intel thesis is strongest for an investor who thinks better execution can resolve constraints, improve product competitiveness, and make manufacturing more economically productive. It weakens if those improvements take longer or cost more than expected, or if the company cannot translate demand into profitable supply.

AMD: the growth thesis and its tests
Reported growth has identifiable drivers, but is not a forecast
AMD said fiscal 2025 Data Center growth was driven primarily by fifth-generation EPYC server processors and Instinct MI350-series GPUs. The company also reported deployments of MI350X products by large hyperscale customers, OEMs, and ODMs, and described continued expansion of its ROCm software ecosystem. These details show reported product activity and strategic direction; they do not establish future market-share gains, recurring AI revenue, or durable margins. AMD 2025 Form 10-K.
For the bullish case, AMD must sustain demand across data-center and client products while converting accelerator interest into profitable deployments. Its software and systems position also matters: selling hardware into AI infrastructure is not by itself proof that customers will remain committed to AMD’s broader platform.

Outside manufacturing shifts rather than removes risk
AMD’s reliance on third-party manufacturing and packaging partners can provide access to external scale, but the company remains exposed to supplier capacity and the availability of critical ecosystem services. The growth thesis therefore depends not only on product competitiveness, but also on AMD’s ability to secure the manufacturing and packaging resources needed to deliver products when customers want them.
The AMD thesis is strongest for an investor who expects its product momentum to persist and believes it can scale AI and server business through external partners. It weakens if growth falls short of expectations, supply becomes a bottleneck, or competitive pressure makes that growth less profitable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide which thesis fits your investment case
- Set the time horizon. Intel’s case depends on operational and manufacturing improvements whose timing is uncertain. AMD’s growth case also requires execution over time; one strong fiscal year is not proof of a durable trend. A short holding period leaves less time for either thesis to develop and may make share-price volatility more important.
- Identify which risk you are willing to underwrite. With Intel, focus on manufacturing execution, supply, capital needs, and whether foundry economics improve. With AMD, focus on product competitiveness, sustaining profitable growth, and dependence on supplier and packaging capacity.
- Check the price you would pay. Compare each stock’s current valuation against plausible earnings and cash-flow outcomes, not just revenue growth or a turnaround narrative. Current share prices, forward valuation multiples, and consensus estimates are not established by the company filings cited here, so this evidence cannot show which stock is cheaper or has more upside today.
- Account for your portfolio. A thesis that suits an investor with a long horizon and tolerance for volatility may not suit someone who cannot absorb a large loss or already has concentrated exposure to semiconductor stocks. Neither company-level operating evidence nor historical EPS can substitute for that portfolio context.
- Define what would change your mind. For Intel, specify what evidence would demonstrate better supply, product execution, and foundry economics. For AMD, specify what would demonstrate continued profitable growth and reliable access to capacity. Revisit those tests as new filings and results arrive rather than treating today’s case as permanent.
What can be concluded from the available evidence?
The filings support a contrast in investment theses, not a stock-specific buy verdict. Intel offers potential upside tied to a difficult product and manufacturing recovery; AMD offers a growth case grounded in reported 2025 results but exposed to competition and external supply dependence. Deciding which stock better fits your thesis requires current valuation data and a personal view about time horizon, portfolio concentration, and tolerance for loss—factors the company-level results alone cannot settle.
