Let an AI agent work somewhere other than the live production site, limit what it can change, inspect its diff, test the result in a preview, and promote the change only through a deliberate human-controlled step. A file restore or a page labeled “preview” is not enough on its own: restores may not undo external actions, and publishing behavior depends on the platform’s configuration.
1. Define a small task and ask what the agent plans to do
Give the agent a bounded request: for example, update one page’s copy or fix a specific layout issue, rather than “improve the site.” If the tool offers a read-only or planning mode, use it first and review the proposed files and steps before allowing edits.
That distinction is explicit in Netlify’s Agent Runners: Ask mode does not edit files, run commands, deploy, or configure settings, while Build mode can make changes. Treat planning as a chance to narrow the task and identify risks—not as proof that the eventual edits will be safe.
2. Isolate the work from the live site
Choose a separate branch, worktree, draft, or platform preview that does not directly modify production. Before enabling write access, identify the production branch and check whether the preview uses separate data, credentials, and external services. An isolated code branch can still reach production databases or third-party services if it inherits their credentials.

Branch-based workflow
Netlify documents Agent Runners that create an automated branch based on production and provide deploy previews. In its Build workflow, the preview can be reviewed before the change is merged; merging the pull request into the production branch triggers publication. See Agent Runners overview and Make changes with Agent Runners. Confirm that your own repository’s production branch and deployment settings match that flow.
CMS and page-branch workflows
Some platforms offer a draft or isolated page workflow rather than a Git branch. Webflow documents page branches for working on pages separately, but the feature requires an Enterprise plan; its MCP server also cannot change site access settings. Check the documented lifecycle and limits before relying on it: Webflow MCP server overview.

A preview is useful only if it is genuinely separated from the live state and its publish action is understood. Verify what data and services it can access, who can publish from it, and what action makes the change live.
3. Give the agent only the permissions the task requires
Do not treat access as all-or-nothing. Limit the agent’s ability to modify files, run commands, use credentials, or call external tools to what the task needs. Protect secrets and sensitive settings, and require approval for production writes or destructive actions wherever the platform supports it.

Visual Studio Code’s guidance describes permission, sandbox, and trust controls, while warning that generated code can be incorrect or insecure. Review its guidance on agent trust and safety alongside your tool’s actual settings. Prisma, for example, documents a separate agent credential and default approval for production or destructive actions in its agent enrollment workflow. These are product-specific controls, not a universal default; check the configuration you will use.
4. Review the actual changes before merging or publishing
Read the diff rather than relying on the agent’s summary. Review code, content, and configuration changes, especially anything that affects deployment, permissions, secrets, data handling, or external integrations. Then test the changed behavior in the isolated preview, including relevant mobile or desktop layouts and any form or checkout flow the edit touches.

Visual Studio Code documents reviewing agent edits through diffs, Source Control, and pull-request review, and recommends human review before committing. Its review and revert guidance is a useful model: inspect what changed, decide whether it meets the request, and use version control to manage the change. A successful preview is evidence about the tested environment, not a guarantee that production will behave identically.
5. Confirm exactly how publishing works
Before granting write access, find out whether the agent changes a draft or branch that awaits approval, or writes directly to the publishing branch. GitCMS documents both review-before-publish and direct-publish modes; in direct-publish mode, changes may be committed to the publishing branch and go live through its deployment pipeline. Read the product’s AI workflow documentation and verify your site’s selected mode.

Where a pull request or explicit publish approval is available, keep that step under human control. Netlify’s documented Build flow publishes when the pull request merges into the production branch; the merge is therefore the promotion step, not merely an administrative detail. The exact trigger differs by setup, so verify which branch or action actually deploys your site.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Keep a recovery plan that covers more than files
Use Git history or equivalent versioning so you can review and revert tracked changes. But do not confuse restoring a workspace with undoing every consequence of the agent’s actions. Visual Studio Code states that workspace restoration does not reverse completed terminal commands, network requests, deployments, or changes made in external services. A checkpoint can help restore files; it cannot necessarily retract an email, undo a database write, or reverse a deployment.
For production and connected services, identify the relevant recovery procedure before the agent starts: for example, how to revert a deployment or restore affected data. Netlify documents staging and rollback capabilities in its Agent Runners overview, but availability and behavior depend on the platform and configuration. Confirm what the rollback actually restores.
Quick Recap
A quick checklist before enabling writes
- The task is narrow, and the agent’s proposed files and steps are understood.
- The agent works on a branch, draft, worktree, or preview separate from the live production state.
- Production credentials, sensitive files, destructive actions, and external tools are restricted or approval-gated where possible.
- The diff—including configuration and deployment-related files—has been reviewed, and the change has been tested in the preview.
- The site’s actual publish mode and production trigger are known; a human controls promotion.
- Version history and a recovery plan address external effects as well as workspace files.
