Clean waterproof leather boots by hand with lukewarm water and a little suitable cleaner, then let them dry naturally away from heat. Cleaning removes dirt; it does not necessarily restore the boot’s durable water-repellent (DWR) finish. Follow the boot maker’s care instructions first, especially when the boots combine leather with a waterproof, breathable membrane.
What to do before cleaning
- Check the boot manufacturer’s care instructions. GORE-TEX’s footwear guidance specifically says to check the manufacturer’s instructions for leather shoes: GORE-TEX footwear care.
- Remove the laces and, if possible, the insoles. Shake out grit, then brush loose dirt from the boots with a soft brush.
- Identify the leather finish. Smooth leather, suede, nubuck, and boots made from mixed leather and fabric may need different cleaners or treatments. Use only products suitable for the boot’s materials and construction.
How to clean waterproof leather boots
- Use lukewarm water with a small amount of liquid detergent, or select a footwear cleaner whose label supports the boot’s leather and construction. GORE-TEX recommends this gentle approach for footwear.
- Work gently over the dirty areas with a soft brush or cloth. Avoid bleach and do not put the boots in a washing machine; GORE-TEX advises against both for footwear.
- If using a separate cleaner, test it first on a discreet area. REI warns that leather color may run during cleaning and recommends a spot test: REI leather-care guidance.
- Rinse or wipe away cleaner as directed by its label and the boot maker. Do not use a treatment simply because it is marketed for leather; confirm it suits the specific finish and any waterproof membrane.
Optional cleaner for stubborn grime
Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel is one task-specific option: REI lists it for smooth, suede, or nubuck leather and recommends it for GORE-TEX or SympaTex products. Nikwax also recommends it for stubborn footwear grime. Check the product label and your boot maker’s directions before use: REI product listing and Nikwax footwear-care guidance.
How to dry the boots safely
- Let boots dry naturally at moderate or room temperature, away from direct heat. Radiators and other strong heat sources can damage footwear materials; GORE-TEX recommends natural drying away from direct heat.
- Remove the insoles so the inside can dry. For thoroughly soaked boots, loosely stuff them with newspaper to draw out moisture and replace it when it becomes damp.
- Do not leave boots wet for a long time. Nikwax likewise advises: “Dry footwear slowly at room temperature.”
When to restore water repellency
Cleaning and restoring DWR are separate tasks. If water no longer beads on the boot’s outer surface, consult the maker’s instructions about restoring the finish. For GORE-TEX footwear, the brand specifies a water-based restorative and cautions that waterproofing waxes or greases can affect breathability. Do not assume that every waterproof leather boot should be waxed: the right treatment depends on its leather, construction, and manufacturer’s recommendations.
Care choices that can affect later repairs
Match any conditioner or water-repellent treatment to the leather type and boot construction, rather than applying one product to all waterproof leather. REI notes that wax residue can interfere with the adhesive bond when boots are resoled, so an unnecessary wax treatment may complicate a later repair.
