To buy AVAX, use a crypto provider available in your location, then confirm the exact Avalanche network supported by both the provider and your destination wallet before transferring. To store AVAX securely, choose between leaving it with a custodial provider and managing your own keys with a self-custody wallet. Self-custody gives you control, but you—not the wallet provider—are responsible for recovery backups.
Before you buy: choose a provider available where you live
There is no single purchase route that is available everywhere. Exchange eligibility, payment options, fees, and AVAX availability depend on your jurisdiction and the provider. Check the provider’s current terms and fees directly before opening an account or placing an order; no current price or fee is established here.
Avalanche Support’s exchange compatibility list, published October 15, 2025, names Binance, Coinbase, Crypto.com, Gate.io, Kraken, and KuCoin, but says the list is fluid and not comprehensive. Treat those names only as starting points for checking current availability and network support—not as a guarantee that a provider serves your location or supports every AVAX network today: Avalanche Support’s exchange compatibility guidance.
How to buy AVAX and transfer it safely
- Check eligibility and costs. Confirm that your chosen provider offers AVAX to customers in your location, and review its current purchase and withdrawal terms.
- Decide where the AVAX will go. If you plan to withdraw to a wallet or another exchange, find the destination’s current AVAX deposit instructions first. If you are keeping AVAX in a custodial account, understand that the provider controls the keys.
- Match the network on both ends. Select only a network explicitly supported by the destination’s deposit instructions. A provider may support one Avalanche chain but not another; an unsupported deposit may result in permanent loss. Do not infer compatibility from an address’s appearance.
- Verify the destination details before confirming. Recheck the address and selected network against the destination’s instructions. For a new destination, consider testing with a small transfer if the provider permits it and the costs make sense; a test does not replace checking network compatibility.
For example, the October 15, 2025 Avalanche Support list says Coinbase wallet addresses should receive only C-Chain AVAX, not P-Chain or X-Chain assets. That is a dated, provider-specific example, not a universal rule or a guarantee of current Coinbase instructions. Check the receiving account’s live deposit screen before every transfer. The same Avalanche Support article warns: “Failing to do so might result in a loss of tokens!”

Understand Avalanche’s three chains before choosing a wallet
| Chain | Role in Avalanche Support guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| C-Chain | EVM-compatible and commonly used by Avalanche dApps. | Confirm that the wallet and destination support C-Chain AVAX for your intended use. |
| X-Chain | Used to send and receive funds; not used for DeFi platforms. | Do not assume that support for C-Chain also means support for X-Chain. |
| P-Chain | Used for staking and staking rewards. | Check current access and staking requirements; Core supports Primary Network P-Chain. |
These roles follow Avalanche Support’s chain guide, published October 15, 2025: What are the differences between the X, P, and C-Chains? Core supports the Primary Network’s X- and P-Chains, while many EVM wallets support C-Chain. A C-Chain address commonly starts with 0x, but that format alone does not prove that a particular network or asset is compatible. Assets do not automatically move between networks, and a transaction on one chain is not a transaction on another. See Avalanche Support’s guidance on adding Avalanche to an EVM-compatible wallet.
Choose between exchange custody and self-custody
Keep AVAX with a custodial provider
A custodial exchange account can be convenient, but the provider holds and manages the private keys. Your access therefore depends on that provider and its account policies. Review its security and recovery procedures, and do not treat an exchange balance as the same thing as personally controlling the wallet keys.

Use a self-custody wallet
With self-custody, you control the private keys and bear responsibility for protecting them and any recovery material. Avalanche Support describes Core as self-custodial: keys are generated and stored on the user’s device. It also cautions that losing private keys or the wallet file usually leaves no way to recover access: What are self-custody & non-custodial wallets?.
- Set up the wallet using the provider’s current official instructions and verify you are using its official website or app before entering credentials.
- Keep recovery material private and offline. Never share a seed phrase or private key with anyone claiming they can restore or secure your wallet.
- Protect the device and review transaction details before approving them. A self-custody wallet does not eliminate phishing, device, backup, or transaction risks.
- Do not assume a wallet can recover a lost seed phrase, private key, or wallet file.
Hardware wallets are one category of self-custody wallet, but no particular model or current AVAX-compatible device list is established here. Before choosing one, check its manufacturer’s current official documentation for the exact Avalanche networks and functions you intend to use.

Use Core rather than the discontinued Avalanche Wallet
The legacy Avalanche Wallet has been discontinued. Its official notice directs users who validate or delegate to Core. Verify the official domain and current app before importing or entering credentials; do not follow an old bookmark or link from an unsolicited message. The migration notice is available at Avalanche Support’s notice that Avalanche Wallet is discontinued.

Avalanche Support’s Core staking article, published October 15, 2025, lists a minimum of 25 AVAX to delegate and 2,000 AVAX to validate. These are dated guidance figures, not a promise of return or a statement of current terms; confirm current requirements in the official staking interface before committing AVAX. The article also notes that staking through Core differs between mobile and web: How do I stake AVAX on Avalanche?
