There is no universal best exchange: fees, features, and legal protections vary by product and jurisdiction, and the details can change.
Start with your own use case
Before comparing platforms, write down where you live, which assets you want, how you will fund purchases, your typical order size and trading frequency, and whether you intend to withdraw crypto to your own wallet. Those details determine which exchange products and fees matter. An exchange available in one country or state may not offer the same assets or services in another.
Compare the all-in cost of the trade
A headline trading-fee percentage is not the total cost. An order-book trade and an instant purchase or conversion can use different pricing and fee structures. Compare the same asset pair, order size, payment method, and timing on each platform, then review the final order preview before committing.
- Trading fee: Check whether the product uses a maker/taker schedule, which tier applies to your account, and whether the fee differs by pair or volume.
- Spread or quoted price: For instant buys and conversions, compare the quoted price with the market price; a visible fee may not capture every cost embedded in the quote.
- Funding cost: Include any charge associated with your chosen payment method.
- Withdrawal cost: If you plan to move crypto off the platform, account for the withdrawal fee and network charge shown for the particular asset and network.
Coinbase says consumer crypto fees are calculated when an order is placed and may depend on payment method, order size, market conditions, jurisdiction, asset, and other costs. Its consumer pricing is distinct from the Coinbase Exchange schedule. Kraken likewise distinguishes its tiered order-book trading schedule from instant-purchase and conversion flows. These schedules are not directly interchangeable, so compare the product you will actually use rather than a platform-wide headline. See Coinbase consumer fees, Coinbase Exchange fees, and Kraken’s fee schedule. Recheck each live schedule on the day you trade; the Kraken schedule visible for this comparison included a table effective Oct. 5, 2026, after the Oct. 4, 2026 check date, so that table should not be treated as the Oct. 4 rate.

Check custody, security, and what happens if the provider fails
Security is not just a login feature. Find out who controls the private keys, what account authentication and withdrawal controls are available, how customer assets are held, and what the terms allow the provider to do with them. Review disclosures about lending or reuse of assets, commingling, withdrawal limits, and what happens if the provider is hacked, closes, or becomes insolvent.
With exchange custody, a provider controls the keys and you rely on its controls and terms. With self-custody, you control the keys but take on the responsibility for protecting them and retaining access. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance states in its Dec. 12, 2025 bulletin, Crypto Asset Custody Basics for Retail Investors: “Self-custody also means that you have sole responsibility for the security of your crypto assets’ private keys.” A hardware wallet is one way to hold keys offline, but buying a device does not remove the risk of losing keys, recovery information, or access.

Do not treat proof-of-reserves as equivalent to an audited financial statement or as proof that every provider risk has been resolved. Nor should you assume that crypto held on a platform has the protections of a bank deposit account or a registered securities exchange. Protections depend on the asset, service, legal entity, and jurisdiction. The SEC discusses custody and proof-of-reserves limitations in its crypto asset investor alert and outlines questions to ask about custody, asset use, fees, security, privacy, and consent in its custody bulletin.
Verify the exact coin, service, and location
A platform’s general coin count does not establish that the asset is available to you for the operation you need. Check each asset and function separately:

- Can you buy or sell it in your country or state, and is the intended trading pair available?
- Can the platform custody it, and are any related services you want—such as staking—available to your account?
- Are deposits and withdrawals enabled? If withdrawing, does the exchange support the exact blockchain network you intend to use?
- What are the withdrawal minimum, fee, and current network status, and does the destination address format match?
Availability can differ by location, legal entity, and product. Coinbase’s disclosures distinguish U.S. trading assets, including New York, from Prime custody support; its Prime list is indicative and was last updated in Q3 2026. Consult the Coinbase digital asset disclosures and Coinbase supported cryptocurrencies and trading pairs for their stated scope, then confirm the current availability shown for your own account. Do not infer global or retail availability from a list covering a different service.
Use a like-for-like comparison
- Define the transaction: Record your location, asset, fiat funding method, typical order amount, frequency, and whether you will withdraw.
- Select the matching product: For each candidate, identify whether you would use an instant purchase or conversion, or an advanced order book. Compare the same pair and applicable fee tier.
- Check the total before purchase: Use the order preview to compare the quoted price and estimated charges for the same order conditions.
- Confirm asset and transfer support: Check local eligibility, the exact pair, and—if withdrawing—the network, minimum, fee, address requirements, and whether transfers are enabled.
- Read custody terms: Establish key control, permitted asset use, withdrawal rules, and the provider’s stated approach to customer assets in distress.
- Recheck official terms before use: Fees, supported assets, and transfer status can change. Confirm them on the platform’s current official pages immediately before opening an account or trading.
What this comparison can and cannot establish
Official fee and asset disclosures help you make a like-for-like shortlist, while SEC investor guidance highlights custody questions and risks. They do not by themselves establish which exchange has the best execution, customer support, incident history, solvency, or local licensing for your circumstances. Check the applicable legal entity and local terms directly; this framework is general information, not an individualized financial recommendation.
