XRP, Bitcoin, and Ether (ETH) are assets tied to networks built for different jobs. Bitcoin emphasizes peer-to-peer digital money, Ethereum supports programmable applications, and the XRP Ledger focuses on ledger, payment, and settlement functions. Their consensus and supply designs differ too—but none of those technical features, by itself, predicts which asset will perform best as an investment.
How XRP, Bitcoin, and Ethereum differ at a glance
One important distinction: XRP is the asset; the XRP Ledger (XRPL) is its network. Bitcoin is both the name commonly used for the network and its native asset, while Ethereum is the network and ETH is its native asset.

A transaction confirmation, settlement, and protocol finality describe related but distinct stages, and a source’s stated timing does not ensure the same experience for every transaction or wallet. They should not be treated as a simple speed ranking. Nor does this comparison establish an independently comparable live-throughput figure for all three networks.

Bitcoin.org characterizes Bitcoin as peer-to-peer digital money. Its proof-of-work system uses miners to confirm transactions and maintain their chronological ordering. Issuance rules are not a price forecast
The fixed issuance schedule and eventual supply cap are protocol rules, not a promise of price appreciation or protection from losses. Bitcoin.org also notes that block discovery is probabilistic and that fees can affect how long a transaction waits for confirmation. Its typical first-confirmation estimate is not a guarantee that a particular payment will be treated as final by a recipient.

Applications and smart contracts
Ethereum.org distinguishes Ethereum’s application-platform role from Bitcoin’s peer-to-peer currency emphasis. Smart contracts let developers build and run applications on the network; that functionality is central to Ethereum’s design, rather than an incidental payment feature.

ETH supply reflects issuance and burning
ETH does not have a fixed maximum in the cited Ethereum.org comparison. The network issues ETH in relation to staking and burns ETH in relation to activity. Describing ETH simply as either “limited” or “unlimited” therefore leaves out how both mechanisms affect supply; neither label determines what ETH will be worth.
What XRP and the XRP Ledger’s design mean to an investor
Keep the asset and network distinct
XRP is the asset associated with the XRP Ledger. XRPL documentation describes a validator-based consensus protocol that does not rely on competitive proof-of-work resource use. It also describes payment-routing capabilities through available currency orders on the ledger’s decentralized exchange. These network capabilities do not, by themselves, demonstrate adoption, liquidity in every payment corridor, or investment performance.

Attribute XRP supply and use-case claims carefully
A 2025 SEC-filed registration statement describes XRP’s initial issuance as 100 billion and presents cross-border use as part of the ledger’s use case. These are issuer-filed descriptions; they should not be mistaken for an independent measure of present-day usage or a guarantee that the asset will be used in any particular payment flow.
Legal context is specific, not universal
In a 2025 SEC filing, Ripple reported that a New York federal court entered final judgment in August 2024, imposing a $125 million civil penalty and an injunction relating to institutional XRP sales. The filing also says Ripple and the SEC dropped their appeals in August 2025, leaving the rulings intact. This procedural account does not establish a blanket legal conclusion for every XRP transaction or jurisdiction.

How to compare the investment risks
Network properties describe how a system is designed to work; they do not establish that its associated asset will rise in price, outperform another asset, or suit a particular investor. The cited materials do not provide a comparable current return, volatility, adoption, market-share, or throughput dataset for all three.
Bitcoin.org specifically warns that bitcoin’s price can rise or fall unpredictably over short periods and describes bitcoin as high risk. That warning should not be presented as a measured comparison of BTC, ETH, and XRP: the cited source does not provide a matching risk estimate for ETH and XRP.

Custody: what to check after choosing an asset
Buying an asset and deciding how to hold it are separate decisions. With self-custody, control of the private keys is central; losing access to those keys can mean losing access to the assets. A hardware wallet is one optional custody category, not a safeguard against price declines or a recommendation to buy a particular model.
Before using a wallet, verify that the exact model and software support the specific asset and network you intend to use—BTC, ETH on the relevant network, or XRP on XRPL. Do not assume that support for one asset or network means support for another, and check the wallet maker’s current compatibility information.
