Bitcoin is designed for peer-to-peer digital currency, Ethereum for programmable applications, and the XRP Ledger (XRPL) for payments, settlement, and exchanging assets. Their native assets serve different roles: bitcoin is used on the Bitcoin network, ether (ETH) powers activity on Ethereum, and XRP is the native asset of the XRPL. These are different networks with different design goals—not interchangeable coins or a universal ranking.
At a glance: Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP
| Network | Primary purpose | Native asset and role | How the network reaches agreement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin | Peer-to-peer digital currency and transfers | Bitcoin is the network’s digital currency; private keys authorize spending. | Proof-of-work mining confirms transactions and orders the ledger. Bitcoin.org’s explanation says a first confirmation usually takes about 10 to 60 minutes; this is not a guarantee. |
| Ethereum | A platform for applications and digital assets built with smart contracts | Ether (ETH) pays for computation and participates in the network’s proof-of-stake security model. | Proof of stake. Ethereum.org’s comparison describes Ethereum finality in its own terms; it is not directly comparable to another network’s confirmation or settlement estimate. |
| XRP Ledger (XRPL) | Payments, settlement, and exchange among assets | XRP is the ledger’s native asset; the XRPL also supports payments denominated in different assets. | Validators follow the XRPL’s consensus protocol, rather than Bitcoin-style mining. XRPL documentation describes settlement as three to six seconds, not a universal guarantee or a controlled comparison. |
The network is the system that processes activity; its native asset is one component of that system. In particular, XRP is not the XRP Ledger, and XRP and Ripple are not interchangeable names.
What is Bitcoin for?
Bitcoin’s design centers on sending and receiving digital currency without relying on a central ledger operator. Its blockchain is a shared public record of confirmed transfers. As Bitcoin.org explains, private keys authorize spending, while proof-of-work miners confirm transactions and help order the ledger.
Ethereum.org’s comparison describes Bitcoin’s maximum supply as 21 million. That is a protocol design feature, not evidence of future price or value. Bitcoin’s purpose is narrower than Ethereum’s general application platform: its core use is the transfer and recording of its digital currency.

What is Ethereum used for?
Ethereum is a platform where developers deploy smart contracts: programs that execute when users submit transactions. This makes the network suitable for applications and digital assets whose rules are implemented in code, rather than only for recording transfers of one currency. See Ethereum.org’s technical introduction.
Ether (ETH), not “Ethereum coin,” is Ethereum’s native asset. Users pay ETH for network computation, and ETH also supports Ethereum’s proof-of-stake security model. The relationship between ETH and Ethereum is therefore both economic and technical: ETH is used to operate on the network and is part of how the network is secured.

What is XRP, and how is it different from the XRP Ledger?
XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger, a decentralized ledger whose documented functions emphasize payments and settlement, including payments denominated in different assets, and a decentralized exchange. The XRPL documentation describes the ledger as a payment system for transfers across national boundaries, but that description does not establish that it is always cheaper, faster, safer, or preferable to other networks.
The XRPL reaches agreement through validators following its own consensus protocol, not through Bitcoin-style proof-of-work mining. The protocol’s details are set out in the XRPL Consensus Protocol documentation. XRP is the asset; XRPL is the network and ledger. Ripple is not a synonym for either.

How their design choices differ
Purpose and programmability
- Bitcoin: focused on peer-to-peer digital currency transfers and their public record.
- Ethereum: provides a general-purpose environment for executing smart contracts and applications.
- XRPL: documentation emphasizes payments, settlement, and exchange among assets.
Consensus and security model
- Bitcoin uses proof of work: miners expend computational work to confirm transactions and order the ledger.
- Ethereum uses proof of stake; ETH has a role in that security model.
- XRPL uses a validator-based consensus protocol. Validators follow the ledger’s rules to reach agreement.
These are distinct trust and security designs. The fact that one avoids Bitcoin-style mining, or uses a different consensus mechanism, does not by itself make it risk-free or establish that it is more secure.
Why the published timing figures are not a speed ranking
The figures in the network documentation describe different concepts. Bitcoin.org says a first confirmation usually takes about 10 to 60 minutes; XRPL documentation describes settlement in three to six seconds; Ethereum.org’s comparison uses its own description of finality. Confirmation, settlement, and finality are not interchangeable measures, and the cited figures are not results from a controlled, like-for-like benchmark. Actual experience can also vary with network conditions.

Choosing what to learn about
- If your question is how a peer-to-peer digital currency records transfers, start with Bitcoin’s blockchain and proof-of-work model.
- If you want to understand applications whose behavior is encoded in programs, focus on Ethereum, smart contracts, and the role of ETH in computation.
- If you are examining payment and settlement functions or asset exchange, distinguish the XRP asset from the XRPL that supports it.
Understanding a network’s design does not determine whether its native asset is a suitable investment. This comparison explains their stated purposes and mechanisms; it does not predict returns or recommend buying any token.
Wallets and self-custody
A cryptocurrency hardware wallet is an optional accessory for people who choose to self-custody assets. A wallet protects the private keys used to authorize transactions; it is not required simply to understand these networks. Support varies by device, software, and asset, so verify compatibility for the exact network and asset before choosing a wallet. Bitcoin.org explains the role of private keys in its Bitcoin overview.
