The legacy consumer goTenna Mesh let a smartphone send text messages and share location over a separate radio device when cellular service was unavailable. It was not a CB radio: it did not provide ordinary voice communication, and a direct off-grid exchange required the other person to have compatible goTenna equipment. The $300 price in the original headline is not verified as current, and the company’s current product catalog does not list consumer Mesh.
How goTenna Mesh worked
Mesh was a two-part system: a smartphone running the goTenna app, paired with a separate radio device. The app handled messages and location sharing; the external device transmitted them over radio. A phone alone could not send a Mesh signal. The goTenna Mesh user manual instructs users to charge the device, install the app on an iOS or Android phone, pair the two, and then use the app to text, share GPS location, or send other data. It recommends positioning the radio externally, unobstructed and as high as possible.
The manual’s description of the app’s use is: “Proceed to text, share GPS location, or send other data over the app using regular text-messaging app conventions.”
What “no cell signal” meant
Mesh could carry a message between compatible devices without relying on cell towers, Wi-Fi routers, or satellites. But an off-grid radio link did not make every phone reachable: for direct communication, the recipient also needed compatible Mesh equipment. The original consumer FAQ also described a relay possibility: a nearby Mesh user with cellular service could pass a message onward by SMS. That was a specific relay path, not a way to text an arbitrary person directly when they had no compatible device.

Why “CB radio” is the wrong comparison
CB radio is associated with voice communication over radio. The consumer goTenna Mesh described in the sources was for app-based data such as text and location, not voice calls. A 2016 S.W.A.T. Magazine article about the original consumer unit likewise describes Bluetooth between phone and device and radio transmission of text or location, and says that model did not support voice or images. It reports 151–154 MHz for that historical product; that is a dated description of the original unit, not a specification for every goTenna product.
Mesh also should not be treated as interoperable with ordinary radios. Its messaging depended on compatible goTenna devices and the app-based system, rather than turning a smartphone into a general-purpose radio transmitter.

Is goTenna Mesh available now, and does it still work?
The current goTenna products catalog displays professional products such as Pro X2, Pro X2m, Pro Deployment Kit 2, and EdgeRelay, but not consumer Mesh. The company still hosts the Mesh manual, and its 2024 app terms mention MESH; neither establishes that new consumer devices are currently for sale or that the legacy app will work reliably with a device acquired today.
Forterra announced that it acquired goTenna on October 9, 2025. The acquisition announcement does not say whether legacy Mesh hardware or app support continues.

Is the $300 price current?
No current $300 consumer Mesh price is established by the available product information. Treat that figure as an unverified headline price, not as a current offer. goTenna’s Pro product page says individual Pro units start at $499, but Pro is a different professional product and that figure is not a price for consumer Mesh.

- Communication type: Does it send text and location, or provide voice?
- Compatible equipment: Does everyone you need to reach have the same type of device?
- Infrastructure: Does the link depend on cellular service, Wi-Fi, satellite connectivity, or none of these?
- Range in your conditions: Terrain, obstructions, device placement, and line of sight matter. The sources available do not establish a current independent range test for consumer Mesh, so a universal range figure would be misleading.
- Availability and software: Confirm that the hardware is sold and that its app and support are still available for your phone.
- Licensing: Check whether the particular radio and region require a license or other authorization.
goTenna describes its current Pro and Pro X products as smartphone-paired professional mesh radios for mapping, messaging, and personnel tracking where cellular, Wi-Fi, or satellite connectivity is unavailable. The company says the technology has been tested at over 100 miles point-to-point line of sight in real-world scenarios; that is a company claim, not an independent consumer Mesh test or a guaranteed range for every product or setting. Its Pro page also states that U.S. Pro X Series use is subject to FCC Part 90 licensing and frequency rules, with purchasers responsible for securing approvals. These professional products are not plug-and-play consumer replacements for the legacy Mesh unit.
