Yes—but “Alexa-compatible” did not mean the fish had Alexa built in. Gemmy’s 2018 Big Mouth Billy Bass paired with a compatible Echo and moved along with Alexa responses, alerts, and music. Newer maker projects take a different route: they modify a fish and add computing, audio, and motor-control hardware. Those builds can be more configurable, but require hands-on electronics work.
How Billy Bass went from an Alexa hack to a product
The 2016 demonstration
In November 2016, artist Brian Kane demonstrated a Big Mouth Billy Bass that spoke with an Alexa voice. TechCrunch reported the demonstration but said Kane had not explained how it worked, so the original electronics remain undocumented in that account. TechCrunch’s report established the striking idea, not a build recipe.
Amazon’s Alexa Gadgets framework
Amazon’s 2017 announcement described Alexa Gadgets as a way for accessories to interact with Echo: gadgets could move, synchronize with Amazon Music and Echo responses, and respond to notifications or other inputs. Amazon also said Gemmy was developing a new Billy Bass that would lip-sync and move to Amazon Music played by Alexa. Amazon’s 2017 Alexa Gadgets announcement put the fish in the context of an Echo-connected accessory.
In 2018, Amazon’s toolkit announcement named Gemmy’s updated Big Mouth Billy Bass among the products expected to use Alexa Gadgets. The toolkit announcement preceded Gemmy’s retail launch announcement.

Gemmy’s 2018 Alexa-compatible fish
Gemmy announced the Alexa-compatible model on November 27, 2018. It paired with a compatible Echo, lip-synced Alexa’s spoken responses, and moved its head and tail for timers, alarms, and notifications. It also danced to Amazon Music and included the original “Fishin’ Time” song. Gemmy said it was available on Amazon at launch; that historical statement does not establish current stock or present-day compatibility. Gemmy’s launch announcement describes the product’s documented features.
What “Alexa-compatible” meant—and what it did not
The 2018 fish was an accessory for a compatible Echo, not an independent Alexa speaker. The Echo handled Alexa; the fish supplied the movement and novelty. The launch announcement describes responses to Alexa actions and music, but does not establish that Alexa software or a standalone voice-assistant system was built into the fish.

That distinction also matters when calling the product an “assistant.” The fish could animate around Alexa activity, but the cited launch material describes an Echo-connected accessory, not a separate conversational assistant or a generative-AI product.
Ready-made fish or DIY conversion?
The two routes solve different problems. The ready-made model was designed to work as a compatible Echo accessory; DIY projects modify a donor fish and add electronics. The sources establish examples of both approaches, not a controlled side-by-side test.

| Consideration | Gemmy’s 2018 Alexa-compatible fish | DIY conversion |
|---|---|---|
| Setup and effort | Designed to pair with a compatible Echo; no project wiring is described in Gemmy’s launch announcement. | Requires physical modification and project-specific wiring. |
| Echo dependence | Paired with a compatible Echo. | Depends on the selected computer, software, and assistant setup; the cited project guides show varied builds rather than one universal configuration. |
| Customization | Documented features include response lip-sync, movement for timers, alarms, and notifications, Amazon Music movement, and “Fishin’ Time.” | Potentially configurable, depending on the build and its software and hardware. |
| Electronics work | No electronics conversion is described in the launch announcement. | May involve a single-board computer, audio input and output, a motor driver, power, and wiring; parts vary by build. |
| Motor compatibility | Sold as a product designed for its stated Alexa Gadgets features. | Motor control must match the particular fish’s hardware and the builder’s wiring. |
How a DIY voice-assistant fish is put together
Maker projects show that a fish can be repurposed as the moving output for a separate voice-assistant setup. A typical concept combines a donor fish, a small computer such as a Raspberry Pi, audio hardware, and motor control. The exact parts and connections are project-specific; a guide’s parts list is an example, not a universal specification.
Core components
- Donor fish: The original toy provides the body and animatronic mechanism. Different versions may have different internal hardware, so a project’s instructions should match the fish being modified.
- Computer: A Raspberry Pi or another suitable computing device runs the chosen software. The computer is separate from the fish; it is not evidence that the original toy contained an assistant.
- Audio input and output: A microphone captures voice, while a speaker plays responses. Some project examples use USB audio devices.
- Motor control: A motor driver connects control signals to the fish’s mechanism. A dual H-bridge is one example used in maker parts lists, not a guaranteed fit for every Billy Bass.
- Power and wiring: The computer, audio components, and motors need an appropriate power arrangement and project-specific connections. Follow the build documentation for the chosen hardware rather than assuming a universal wiring diagram.
Community guides and repositories document examples of these conversions: Raspberry Pi Big Mouth Billy Bass project, Adafruit’s Big Mouth Billy Bass guide, and another community build. They demonstrate that maker conversions exist; they do not establish that every fish version, parts combination, or assistant setup will work the same way.

Can you turn a singing fish into an AI assistant?
Potentially, if you build or adapt a system that provides the assistant software, microphone, speaker, computer, and motor control. In that arrangement, the fish is the animated shell; the separate electronics and software provide the voice-assistant functions. Whether the result uses generative AI depends on the software and services selected for that particular build. The 2018 Gemmy product should not be described as a generative-AI assistant based on its launch announcement.

What to check before buying or building
- For the Gemmy product: Verify that a listing is for the Echo-connected Alexa-compatible model, not simply the original singing fish. Gemmy’s announcement confirms availability at launch only, not current stock or compatibility with current Echo models.
- For a DIY project: Identify the fish version and compare its mechanism with the project’s documented hardware before buying components. Motor control and wiring are not universal.
- For assistant features: Confirm which software the build uses and what it can actually do. A fish that moves to voice output is not, by itself, proof of any particular assistant capability.
