If a game reports a hardware ban on a used CPU or PC, don’t assume the CPU itself was banned or replace parts yet. Hardware-ban rules are specific to each game, and a device-level ban does not identify which component or identifier triggered it. First verify the exact notice through the publisher’s official channel, then check your seller’s return or dispute deadline.
What a hardware ban does—and does not—tell you
A hardware ban is a restriction imposed under a particular game or publisher’s enforcement policy. It is not a universal blacklist shared by all games. The words “device banned” also do not prove that the CPU alone is flagged: the available policy information does not identify a universally banned component or establish that replacing one part clears a restriction.
There is documented secondhand-device risk. Activision warns that hardware bans may apply to devices previously used when policy violations occurred, and says players should exercise caution when buying, borrowing, or using secondhand, shared, or public devices. Its policy describes device-level bans that may affect Call of Duty titles, can vary in length, and are not eligible for appeal: Call of Duty Security and Enforcement Policy.
What to do first
- Record what the game actually says. Note the game and platform, the full error or status message, your account’s status, and when the problem began. A launch failure or restriction message alone may not establish that the hardware is banned.
- Check the publisher’s official status or support information. For Call of Duty, Activision says to check the device in a crossplay title while signed in with an account in good standing; a notification appears if the hardware is banned. Follow the applicable game’s own instructions rather than applying another publisher’s policy.
- Contact official support with the secondhand-purchase details. Explain that you bought the device used. Have the purchase date, listing, receipt, and a screenshot of the notice ready; provide serial or model information only if support requests it. Ask what status applies and what official options exist. Do not assume support can reverse a hardware ban: Activision says its hardware bans are not appealable.
- Protect your purchase options while you investigate. Save the listing, seller messages, receipt, and payment records. Check the seller’s return terms and the marketplace or payment provider’s dispute process and deadlines. Whether a return or dispute is available depends on the applicable terms and circumstances.
- Wait for a confirmed diagnosis before changing hardware. Don’t buy a CPU, motherboard, or drive based only on a generic message. The notice may concern a different restriction, and public policy does not establish a particular component swap as a reliable remedy. Avoid tools or advice intended to spoof hardware identifiers or evade enforcement.
Use the right route for the type of restriction
If the game identifies a hardware or device ban
Use that game’s official status checker and support route. Keep the support response with your purchase records, and follow the stated enforcement policy. The publisher may distinguish hardware restrictions from account penalties; do not assume an account-ban appeal process applies to a device ban.

If the message is a game ban on Steam
Steam distinguishes a ban issued by a game developer from a Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) ban. For a developer-issued game ban, Steam directs users to the game developer’s support information: Steam Support: Banned by Game Developer (Game Ban). Check the game’s notice and the developer’s policy before deciding what kind of restriction you have.
If it is an account penalty
Account penalties have their own rules and appeal eligibility. Activision, for example, says a permanent account ban may be overturned only when the infraction resulted from account hacking; temporary bans and limited matchmaking are not eligible for appeal. Those account-penalty rules are separate from Activision’s statement that hardware bans are not appealable: Activision: Appeal a Ban.

If the message concerns a system configuration
A security or anti-cheat restriction can require a system setting rather than indicate that a used component is banned. Riot’s Vanguard restrictions guidance directs users to the displayed error for the required setting; it does not establish that the CPU alone was banned: Riot Games Support: Vanguard Restrictions.

Windows activation is a licensing issue, not evidence of an anti-cheat restriction. On a pre-owned PC, activation may fail if a product key was reused beyond its license terms; substantial hardware changes can also affect activation. Microsoft advises asking the seller for the original media and product key. If the key is unavailable or invalid, a new license may be needed. Use Microsoft’s guidance for activation problems: Why can’t I activate Windows?
