French-door refrigerators are usually the better fit if you want a broad, eye-level fresh-food area; side-by-side refrigerators suit kitchens where narrower door swing matters and you want some frozen food within easy reach. The trade-off is access: a French-door freezer is a pull-out drawer below, while a side-by-side freezer is narrow and may not fit wide items such as pizza boxes. Neither layout is automatically more efficient; compare the exact models’ dimensions and energy information.

How the two refrigerator layouts differ

A French-door refrigerator has two doors across the upper fresh-food compartment and a freezer drawer below. Opening one fresh-food door at a time uses less swing space than opening one wide door, while opening both gives access to a broad shelf area. A side-by-side splits the cabinet vertically, with fresh food on one side and frozen food on the other. Both doors are relatively narrow, which can help in a tight kitchen. Consumer Reports’ refrigerator guide describes these category-level access differences.

What matters French-door Side-by-side
Door swing Two upper doors; less swing space than a single wide fresh-food door Narrow doors can suit tighter spaces
Fresh-food access Broad upper compartment; most fresh food is at eye level Fresh food is on one side, with some items at eye level
Freezer access Lower pull-out drawer; requires bending and room to pull it open Vertical compartment; some frozen food is at eye level
Wide frozen items Check the specific drawer and shelf dimensions Narrow compartment may make wide boxes difficult to store

Which layout is better for your kitchen and habits?

Choose French-door if fresh-food access is the priority

The broad upper compartment can make it easier to see and arrange wide dishes, platters, and fresh groceries. It is a strong candidate if your household reaches into the refrigerator much more often than the freezer. Check the drawer depth and pull-out clearance, particularly if an island or cabinetry is opposite the refrigerator.

Choose side-by-side if you want narrow doors or less bending

Because both compartments extend vertically, some fresh and frozen food is available at eye level. Breann Chai, a Consumer Reports refrigerator tester, says side-by-sides let users reach some fresh and frozen items without bending as much as with top- or bottom-freezer designs. The compromise is the freezer’s narrow width: measure the largest frozen containers you regularly store before deciding whether they will fit.

Will a side-by-side fit a pizza box?

It might, but do not assume it will. Consumer Reports identifies wide items such as frozen pizza boxes as a potential problem in a side-by-side’s narrow freezer. Measure the box or largest item you need to store and compare that measurement with the specific model’s usable shelf and door-opening dimensions. Published capacity alone does not tell you whether a wide item will fit.

What refrigerator size will fit your kitchen?

Consumer Reports lists category widths of 28–37 inches for French-door refrigerators and 33–36 inches for side-by-sides. Its guide lists capacity up to 31 cubic feet for French-door models and up to 29 cubic feet for side-by-sides. These are category ranges and upper limits, not dimensions or usable capacity for every model. Use the exact product specifications and installation manual before buying.

  1. Measure the refrigerator opening’s width, height, and depth, including any trim or protrusions that reduce usable space.
  2. Check the model’s required ventilation clearances in its installation documentation; there is no single clearance figure that applies to every refrigerator.
  3. Account for the doors’ full opening angle and, for a French-door model, the lower drawer’s pull-out path. Include nearby walls, cabinets, and islands.
  4. Measure the delivery route, including doorways, hallways, stairs, and turns, and compare it with the appliance’s delivery dimensions.
  5. Compare interior shelf, bin, and drawer dimensions with the largest items you store, not just the advertised capacity.

Which refrigerator uses less electricity?

There is no reliable layout-only answer for French-door versus side-by-side. ENERGY STAR says larger refrigerators generally use more energy, and that top-freezer models tend to use the least energy compared with bottom-freezer and side-by-side models. ENERGY STAR certification is available for both French-door and side-by-side designs, so compare the specific finalists’ energy information and size rather than assuming one of these two layouts always wins.

ENERGY STAR’s guidance says the most energy-efficient refrigerators are typically 16–20 cubic feet. That is a general observation, not a recommendation to buy that capacity regardless of household needs. Choose an appropriately sized unit and compare model-specific annual energy consumption. ENERGY STAR’s refrigerator guidance explains its sizing and efficiency recommendations.

Do icemakers and dispensers change the decision?

Features vary by model. Side-by-sides often include icemakers and water dispensers, while either layout may offer different feature combinations. Decide whether an external dispenser or automatic ice is valuable enough to include in your comparison, then check the exact model’s feature list and service information.

Consumer Reports says 31 percent of refrigerators with icemakers in its member survey had an icemaker problem by the end of the fifth year. The survey covered more than 71,500 new refrigerators purchased between 2015 and 2025; the figure is a survey result, not a prediction for an individual appliance. Consumer Reports’ guide provides the category and survey context.

What do buyers tend to choose?

In figures Consumer Reports reported in 2026, 56 percent of its surveyed members who had purchased a refrigerator bought a French-door model, compared with 16 percent who bought a side-by-side. These are Consumer Reports member survey figures, not national market shares, and they do not establish that one layout is right for every kitchen. Consumer Reports’ 2026 side-by-side report gives that survey context.

Quick Recap

A practical way to choose between the two

  • Start with fit: eliminate any model that fails the opening, clearance, door-swing, drawer-pull, or delivery-route check.
  • Test your storage pattern: compare shelf and drawer dimensions against your regular groceries, dishes, and largest frozen items.
  • Prioritize access: favor French-door if broad fresh-food storage matters most; consider side-by-side if narrow door swing and eye-level access to some frozen food matter more.
  • Compare exact specifications: check usable storage arrangement, annual energy use, certification, and included features for the models still under consideration.
  • Weigh convenience features: decide whether an icemaker or external dispenser is worth its place in your comparison.
