PS5 games often run slowly—or fail to run reliably—in emulators because PS5 emulation is experimental and compatibility varies by game, emulator, and build. A faster PC can help when a supported game is limited by your hardware, but it cannot add missing emulator features or fix a compatibility bug. Check the exact game in the exact emulator’s compatibility list before changing settings or buying components.
Why do PS5 games run slowly in emulators?
Emulation requires software to reproduce a console’s system behavior and graphics on a different platform. An emulator may still be missing or incorrectly handling functions a particular game needs. That can cause slow performance, graphical problems, crashes, or failure to start; adding PC power does not resolve an unimplemented feature.
Compatibility is specific to each emulator and game
Projects use their own compatibility categories, and they do not mean the same thing across projects. RPCS5, for example, distinguishes “playable,” “ingame,” “intro,” “loadable,” and “nothing”—from smooth operation to failure to initialize. Read the project’s definitions and the entry for your exact title rather than treating a status as a universal score. RPCS5’s compatibility list is one project-specific example.
Booting a game is not the same as reaching functional gameplay, and reaching gameplay is not proof of stability or completion. The RPCSX FAQ describes that project as experimental: it can run test samples and play in-game with a handful of titles, while booting games from its virtual shell remains in progress.

CPU, graphics, and translation work all play a role
The emulator has to run the game-facing console behavior it supports as well as handle graphics and other system functions. Shader translation and graphics API support can affect rendering and performance. Tom’s Hardware reported that a SharpEmu update improved SPIR-V shader translation and Vulkan support, while only a subset of its tested titles reached gameplay. The report’s results describe a project milestone, not a general performance guarantee.
Host hardware can also be a bottleneck, but implementation details differ between emulators. RPCS5’s guide says most guest code can run natively on an x86-64 host in that project, while translation is relevant on Apple silicon and other ARM hosts. Do not assume that explanation or its implications apply to every emulator. RPCS5’s configuration guide explains its own system settings.

FPS claims may cover only a short test
Performance depends on the emulator build, game, operating system, graphics driver, settings, and the particular scene tested. In a Tom’s Hardware report published September 27, 2026, 12 of 55 SharpEmu-tested titles reportedly reached gameplay, and six were described as playable at 60 FPS. Those six had not been tested from start to finish. A brief clip or promising frame rate therefore does not establish that a whole game runs smoothly or reliably.
How can I make a PS5 emulator run faster?
First determine whether the problem is a supported game hitting a hardware limit or a compatibility issue. Use this order to avoid spending time on tweaks that cannot address the cause:

- Confirm the console version and emulator. Make sure you are using a PS5 emulator for a PS5 game. PS4 guidance is not PS5 guidance: shadPS4’s Quickstart is specifically for PS4 emulation, so its minimum requirements are not PS5 emulator requirements.
- Check the exact title in the project’s current compatibility list. Read what the status means and look for reported issues. If the game is unsupported, only loadable, or known to fail in the section where you are stuck, changing PC settings may not help. Start with RPCS5’s list if that is your emulator; use the corresponding project’s own list for others.
- Follow that emulator’s setup guide. Apply its instructions for your operating system and graphics driver rather than importing settings from another project. Keep drivers current when the emulator’s guide recommends doing so.
- Avoid unrelated tweaks and preserve project-recommended caches. For RPCS5 specifically, the configuration guide recommends leaving two or three host threads for the operating system and retaining the JIT cache. It also warns that verbose logging can slow execution enough to affect the behavior being investigated. These are RPCS5-specific recommendations, not universal settings.
- Change one variable at a time. Record the emulator build, game, host system, setting changed, and symptom. This makes a reproducible problem easier to report through the project’s support channels; it does not guarantee a speed improvement.
- Consider an upgrade only after measuring a bottleneck. The available results do not establish a generally reliable PS5-emulation CPU, GPU, memory, or resolution recommendation.
Will a better GPU help PS5 emulation?
It may help if a compatible game is demonstrably limited by graphics performance, but there is no evidence here for a universal GPU upgrade that makes PS5 games run well in emulators. One reported KytyPS5 test ran the PS5 version of GTA V at roughly 40–60 FPS on a Ryzen 9 9950X3D and Radeon RX 7900 XT system, then crashed after the opening mission. The report does not isolate CPU and GPU effects, compare settings, or establish recommendations for other games. Tom’s Hardware’s account is one incomplete test, not a parts guide.
Can I fix stuttering by changing emulator settings?
Sometimes a project-specific configuration change can help when the game is already supported, but stuttering can also reflect incomplete emulation, shader work, a host bottleneck, or a game-specific defect. Use the emulator’s own guide and change one setting at a time; avoid assuming a setting recommended for one project applies to another. If the same slowdown reliably occurs at the same point, record the build and conditions and report it through that project’s issue-reporting path.

How to judge PS5 emulator performance claims
Before relying on a compatibility label or FPS headline, check what it actually establishes:

- Game status: Does the title fail to boot, reach an intro, reach gameplay, or have a project-defined playable status?
- Stability and completeness: Are crashes, audio or graphics defects, or later untested sections disclosed?
- Test conditions: Are the emulator build, game version, host CPU and GPU, operating system, settings, and test scene identified?
- Evidence type: Is this a project compatibility entry, a reported developer milestone, or a short clip?
- Support path: Does the project publish current configuration guidance and a way to report issues?
