Caterpillar’s revenue is driven by sales of equipment, engines, power-generation products, turbines, locomotives and services, plus customer financing. Its results move with end-user demand, dealer inventories, pricing, currency and the mix of businesses selling into construction, mining, energy and other markets. Profitability also depends on manufacturing costs, tariffs, restructuring, segment mix and financing economics—so sales can rise while margins fall.
What do Caterpillar’s latest annual results show?
Caterpillar reported $67.6 billion in sales and revenues for 2025, up 4% from $64.8 billion in 2024. Operating profit margin, however, fell to 16.5% from 20.2%. The figures below are company-reported full-year results; adjusted margin excludes restructuring costs in both years.
| Full-year measure | 2024 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Sales and revenues | $64.8 billion | $67.6 billion |
| Operating profit margin | 20.2% | 16.5% |
| Adjusted operating profit margin | 20.7% | 17.2% |
In Caterpillar’s 2025 sales bridge, $3.4 billion of higher sales volume was partly offset by $0.8 billion of unfavorable price realization. The margin decline alongside revenue growth shows why sales alone do not explain profitability: the extra volume did not prevent cost, pricing and other pressures from weighing on profit. Caterpillar’s 2025 annual results attribute volume growth primarily to higher equipment sales to end users.
Which businesses generate Caterpillar’s revenue?
Caterpillar reports three primary operating segments—Construction Industries, Resource Industries, and Power & Energy—alongside Financial Products. The first three sell equipment, engines, energy products and related offerings into different markets; Financial Products provides financing and related services. The mix among them changes over time, so one period’s largest segment is not necessarily the company’s permanent growth leader.

Construction Industries
This segment reflects demand for construction equipment across geographies and the timing of dealer orders and inventories. Its results can differ by region and equipment application.
Resource Industries
Resource Industries serves mining, heavy construction, quarry and aggregates, and rail activity. Changes in demand across those end markets can move its sales and profit differently from construction-focused businesses.
Power & Energy
This segment includes engines, turbines and related services for power generation, oil and gas, industrial and transportation applications. A change in demand for one of these applications can alter the segment’s contribution to company results.
Financial Products
Financial Products earns revenue from financing and related activities. Its performance depends on factors such as earning assets, financing rates, insurance margins and provisions for credit losses—not just equipment shipment volumes.

What drives changes in reported revenue?
End-user demand and sales volume
When dealers sell more Caterpillar equipment to customers, stronger end-user demand can support higher shipments and revenue. In Caterpillar’s 2025 annual results, higher equipment sales to end users were the primary driver of volume growth.
Dealer inventories and shipment timing
Caterpillar’s sales to dealers and dealers’ sales to end users are related but not identical measures. A dealer inventory build can support Caterpillar shipments even if end-user sales do not rise at the same pace; a drawdown can have the reverse effect. In Q4 2025, dealer inventory was about flat, compared with a $1.3 billion decline in Q4 2024. Caterpillar identified the inventory change as one factor in the year-over-year sales-volume comparison.
Price realization
Price realization captures the effect of price changes on reported sales. It can move independently of volume: Caterpillar’s 2025 sales increased on higher volume while unfavorable price realization partially offset that increase. Price changes also matter to profit, but their effect depends on costs as well as the revenue they bring in.
Currency and business mix
Caterpillar reports results across global markets, so exchange-rate movements affect the translation of sales into its reporting currency. Its quarterly sales bridge presents currency as a separate factor. The businesses and end markets contributing to sales also matter: a period led by one segment can look different from a period led by another, even when consolidated revenue grows in both.

Services and the installed base
Caterpillar describes its products and services as supported by a global dealer network. Services can complement equipment sales, but the results discussed here do not establish a specific service-revenue contribution or growth rate; those should not be inferred from equipment sales or the size of the installed base.
Why can profit move differently from sales?
Manufacturing costs, including tariffs
Higher manufacturing costs can absorb the benefit of selling more equipment. In its Q4 2025 results, Caterpillar reported that $1.030 billion of unfavorable manufacturing costs was a chief factor in lower quarterly operating profit and said the pressure largely reflected higher tariffs.
Price compared with costs
Favorable price realization can support margins, while unfavorable realization can constrain them. The profit effect depends on what happens to manufacturing and other costs at the same time; revenue gains from volume or pricing do not automatically translate into higher margins.
Restructuring and reported versus adjusted results
Restructuring costs lowered reported profitability in 2025. Caterpillar reported $282 million of higher restructuring costs as another chief factor in the Q4 2025 operating-profit decrease. Adjusted operating profit margin removes restructuring costs for the stated years, so it is a different measure from reported operating profit margin and should be labeled accordingly.

Segment mix and segment-level performance
Profit can diverge among Caterpillar’s operating segments. For Q4 2025, Power & Energy segment profit increased 25%, while Construction Industries segment profit declined 12% and Resource Industries declined 24%. Looking only at consolidated revenue can conceal these different trajectories.
Financial Products’ financing and credit economics
For Q4 2025, higher average earning assets supported Financial Products revenue, while lower average financing rates partly offset the increase. Segment profit benefited from insurance margins, earning assets and lower credit-loss provisions. These drivers can change the segment’s contribution even when equipment demand is not the main factor.

Caterpillar reported $20.543 billion in consolidated sales and revenues for Q2 2026, up 24% from $16.569 billion in Q2 2025. The company’s quarterly bridge attributed changes to volume, price realization and currency, and also showed inter-segment and other items. The table separates sales for the three operating segments from Financial Products revenue; the year-over-year percentages are Caterpillar’s reported comparisons.
| Business | Q2 2026 sales or revenue | Change from Q2 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Power & Energy | $8.238 billion | Up 17% |
| Construction Industries | $8.346 billion | Up 35% |
| Resource Industries | $4.648 billion | Up 20% |
| Financial Products | $962 million | Up 7% |
This is a snapshot of one quarter, not a durable ranking of which business will lead. For context, Q4 2025 segment profit moved in sharply different directions, as shown above. Revenue growth by segment should not be treated as proof that each segment’s profit or margin grew at the same rate.

How should you read Caterpillar’s retail statistics?
Caterpillar’s Q2 2026 retail statistics offer directional context on end-user activity, not a substitute for audited revenue or sales figures. Selected company-published year-over-year changes were:
| Q2 2026 retail measure | Reported change |
|---|---|
| Power & Energy: power generation | Up 72% |
| Power & Energy: oil and gas | Up 6% |
| Power & Energy: industrial | Down 8% |
| Power & Energy: combined | Up 33% |
| Construction Industries: world retail sales | Up 22% |
| Resource Industries: total retail sales | Up 17% |
| Resource Industries: rail | Up 272% |
Caterpillar says retail information is primarily based on unaudited reports voluntarily supplied by independent dealers. Those reports are not subject to Caterpillar’s internal controls over financial reporting and may be incomplete or inaccurate. The company describes the information as an indication of approximate trends, direction and magnitude, not a substitute for audited SEC financial statements, and says it does not undertake to update or adjust prior-period retail information.
Period-to-period comparisons also need care because Caterpillar recast its segment classification in March 2026, and earlier retail data may not have been recast. Use retail changes as a signal about reported dealer-level trends; use Caterpillar’s financial results for claims about recognized sales, revenues and profit.
