Google’s “AI co-pilot” is Gemini adding conversational voice features to Google Maps navigation—not a self-driving system. Google says drivers can ask for places or suggestions along a route, report traffic, and hear some directions tied to landmarks as well as distance cues. Availability varies by feature and rollout; Google’s announcements do not provide a current country-, device-, and account-by-account eligibility list.

What Google Maps’ AI co-pilot does

In a December 5, 2025 announcement recap, Google described Gemini as enabling a hands-free, conversational driving experience in Maps. Drivers could use their voice to find places, report traffic, and ask for suggestions along their route. Google’s description is of a voice-led assistant for navigation and information—not an autonomous driving feature.

Google presented the experience as more conversational than a conventional search box: drivers can ask for something while navigating rather than relying only on tapping through on-screen search. The announcement does not establish that every request will be understood or that the experience improves safety, accuracy, or trip times.

How landmark-based directions differ from ordinary cues

Gemini-powered navigation can pair a familiar distance instruction with a nearby landmark. Google’s example is “turn right after the Thai Siam Restaurant,” alongside the conventional cue “turn right in 500 feet.” The landmark provides another way to recognize a turn; Google’s announcement does not say that distance-based directions are being replaced.

Maps navigation and Android Auto are related, but not the same feature

Google’s Maps announcement concerns navigation-specific requests and directions inside Google Maps. A separate Android Auto announcement describes a broader Gemini assistant experience on the car display, for users who had upgraded from Google Assistant to Gemini on their phones.

Experience Examples Google announced Rollout details in Google’s announcement
Gemini in Google Maps navigation Find places, report traffic, ask for route suggestions, and receive landmark-based directions. Google said Gemini in Maps navigation was rolling out wherever Gemini was available. It separately said landmark-based navigation was rolling out in the United States on Android and iOS.
Gemini in Android Auto Add stops, send messages, access Gmail, create playlists, and brainstorm using natural language. Google said the rollout was global in 45 languages. It described having the Gemini app on the phone and looking for a tooltip on the car display when the feature becomes available.

These are Google’s rollout statements at announcement time, not a definitive availability guarantee today. They do not establish access for every country, phone, vehicle, app version, or account. Check Google’s current product guidance and the availability prompt in your own setup rather than assuming that one feature’s scope applies to the other.

What the rollout numbers do—and do not—tell you

Google said in 2024 that Maps had more than 2 billion users each month and received over 100 million map updates every day. In its 2025 Android Auto post, Google said Android Auto was available in over 250 million cars and described Gemini’s rollout as covering 45 languages. These are company-published scale figures, not independent measurements of the new features’ performance or safety.
