Claude for Android can prepare certain actions involving supported apps, but Anthropic describes a flow in which you open the relevant app and review or complete the action. Its documentation does not confirm that Claude keeps working autonomously when you switch apps or lock your phone.
What happens when Claude uses an Android app?
Claude can work with selected native and third-party Android apps, including messaging, email, calendars, alarms, timers, location services, maps, and—under specific restrictions—Health Connect. Examples include preparing a message or email, finding a nearby place, showing a destination on a map, reading a calendar, creating an event, or setting an alarm or timer. The documented process is interactive, not unattended: Claude offers an action card or prompt in the conversation, and you tap it to open the relevant app. For a message or email, you review the prefilled text, make any changes, and send it from that app. Location and calendar access require permission if you have not already granted it. Anthropic does not describe these actions as continuing after the phone is locked.
Does Claude keep working if you switch apps or lock your phone?
Anthropic’s documentation reviewed here does not say that Claude continues a task in the background, stays active after you switch apps, or carries on after the screen locks. That is different from saying every task will immediately stop; the documented materials simply do not establish background or locked-screen continuity. Treat app actions as something you initiate and complete through the interactive flow, rather than as a persistent service.

Does the Android widget work from the lock screen?
No lock-screen access is documented. Anthropic describes the Claude widget as a home-screen widget with shortcuts to start a conversation, open a camera-enabled chat, or begin voice dictation. It requires Android 8.0 Oreo or later. It is a quicker way to open Claude, not a documented lock-screen control or a way to keep Claude running. Details are in Anthropic’s Claude widget instructions.
Can you use Claude voice mode with the screen off?
Claude voice mode is available on Android. To start it, open Claude Mobile and tap the voice-mode control; voice mode is a spoken two-way conversation, while dictation turns your speech into text for a prompt. Anthropic says connected tools can be used during voice conversations, but its instructions do not specify whether an Android voice session continues after the app is backgrounded or the phone is locked. Android app features with important limits
- Reminders: Anthropic documents reminders as an iOS-only feature; Claude cannot create or manage reminders on Android.
- Contacts: Claude does not have direct access to contacts.
- Calendar events: Editing an event depends on whether you own it.
- Location: Team and Enterprise members cannot use the location tool, according to Anthropic’s Android app guide.
- Health Connect: This feature is in beta, requires Android 14 or later, and is limited to users in the United States on Pro or Max plans. It is read-only: Claude can analyze data but cannot write or change Health Connect entries.
