There is no finalized packing list for a crewed Mars expedition. What astronauts would “pack” is better understood as a mission’s complete set of life-support, habitat, power, communications, mobility, maintenance, and science systems—not personal luggage. NASA is still working through key architecture decisions, so any specific manifest would be speculative.
Why a Mars packing list is not like an ordinary travel checklist
A Mars crew cannot rely on quick resupply or immediate help from Earth. The vehicle and surface habitat must support the crew, keep critical systems operating, and provide for planned work over the mission’s transit and surface phases. NASA describes logistics as supporting life, system maintenance, and science; the items and quantities depend on mission requirements. NASA’s Mars architecture overview also emphasizes that power needs vary with the mission profile.
That means the useful question is not “Which personal items go in a suitcase?” but “Which systems and supplies must be delivered, maintained, and kept available for this crew and mission?” NASA has not published a final crewed-Mars equipment manifest, luggage allowance, or completed packing checklist.
What a Mars mission would need to provide
Transit and habitat life support
The spacecraft and surface habitat would need a pressurized, livable environment and a way to manage life-support consumables. For work outside the vehicle or habitat, the spacesuit is itself a self-contained life-support micro-environment. NASA’s spacesuit standard describes suits as providing life support, nutrition, hydration, and waste and consumables management while enabling crew tasks. NASA’s spacesuit design requirements state that EVA suits are designed for durations of less than a day because of potential human and suit-system constraints.

Spacesuits and surface work
A Mars surface suit would need to protect its wearer while allowing the planned work to be done. NASA’s standard includes radiation monitoring and alerting, and requires nutrition provision for surface suits intended for EVAs longer than four hours. These are engineering requirements, not a universal list of what a crew would carry on every excursion; suit provisions would depend on the planned EVA and mission design.
NASA’s 2025 account of Mars environmental hazards identifies freezing temperatures, fine dust that can stick to spacesuits and wear materials, perchlorates that can be toxic to humans, and limited surface protection from ultraviolet radiation. Mars lacks Earth’s ozone layer, which blocks harmful UV; NASA says further understanding of the environment is needed to assess risks and design protective suits and habitats. NASA’s Mars environment overview discusses the need for more understanding, while NASA’s Perseverance feature describes the surface hazards.

Power, logistics, and maintenance
Surface power must be part of the architecture because it supports operations and other mission systems. In its December 2024 architecture update, NASA said fission power was selected as the primary surface power source in its plan. That is a NASA planning decision, not evidence that every future Mars mission will use an identical, finalized hardware stack. NASA’s architecture update describes the decision-making process.
Logistics would also have to cover maintenance and science work, but the actual tools, spares, and quantities cannot be named as a final manifest without a specific mission design. NASA says those logistics vary with requirements; it has not established a universal rover, tool set, or spare-parts list for a human Mars expedition.

Communications, navigation, and autonomy
Communication delays and blackouts are unavoidable in crewed Mars missions, according to NASA’s architecture overview. Crews and onboard systems therefore need significant autonomy: they cannot assume Earth can respond instantly to a problem or direct every operation in real time. Communications and navigation capabilities belong in the mission plan, but their precise equipment and procedures depend on the selected architecture.
Crew health and radiation protection
Radiation, changing gravity, isolation, distance from Earth, and surface environmental conditions are connected crew risks in NASA’s planning. Radiation protection is not reducible to a single item that can be added to a suitcase; the relevant systems and procedures depend on the vehicle, mission timeline, and other design choices.

What NASA’s radiation estimate does—and does not—say
NASA Science’s 2024 reference estimate puts total radiation exposure at about 1 sievert for an illustrative mission using 180 days outbound, 500 days on Mars, and 180 days for the return. The estimate is based on Mars Science Laboratory Radiation Assessment Detector measurements inside spacecraft shielding, with roughly equal contributions assigned to outbound transit, the surface stay, and return. NASA Science’s radiation overview presents that scenario.
It is a scenario-specific estimate, not a guaranteed dose for every future mission and not an itemized shielding prescription. Different trajectories, mission durations, solar conditions, and spacecraft designs could change exposure.

Why there is no settled Mars equipment manifest yet
In a December 13, 2024 NASA update, fission power was described as the first of seven key decisions for human Mars exploration. NASA Associate Administrator Jim Free said, “We’re taking a methodical approach to mapping out the decisions we need to make, understanding resource and technological trades, and ensuring we are listening to feedback from stakeholders.” NASA’s announcement signals active architecture planning, not a completed crew checklist.
Even illustrative planning choices have to be evaluated against mission-specific trade-offs such as crew safety, mass and delivery constraints, autonomy during communication delays, surface power, maintainability and redundancy, and the duration of transit and surface operations. Until a mission architecture is settled, a detailed personal-style packing list would imply certainty NASA’s published planning does not provide.
What Mars suit-material tests tell us
NASA’s Perseverance rover carries five small spacesuit-material samples to study how materials fare on Mars and inform future suit design. The swatches include polycarbonate visor material, Vectran, two types of Teflon, and Ortho-Fabric, a layered fabric incorporating Nomex, Gore-Tex, and Kevlar. NASA’s account of the experiment describes these samples as material research. They are not proof of a final Mars suit construction.
Quick Recap
What can be said with confidence
- A human Mars expedition would require coordinated mission systems and logistics, not just crew luggage.
- Suit, habitat, power, communications, mobility, maintenance, science, and health provisions would be designed around the mission’s requirements.
- NASA has not established a final launch date, complete crew manifest, luggage allowance, or final suit and habitat models in the sources cited here.
