If you want a small phone in 2026, start with the Samsung Galaxy S26 or Apple iPhone 17: both are about 150 mm tall and 71–72 mm wide, making them compact by current flagship standards. The shorter iPhone 17e is another option if you prefer iOS and a simpler, lower-cost model. There is no universal winner: platform, local price, camera needs and one-handed comfort all matter.
Here, “small” means a conventional phone with a relatively narrow, short body—not simply a small screen. Foldables such as the Galaxy Z Flip7 can be pocketable when closed, but they are a different size and handling trade-off.
What counts as a small phone?
There is no industry-wide definition. Notebookcheck filters its pocket-friendly list by body volume and length, excluding phones over 88,000 mm³ or 156 mm long; it also notes that width, screen-to-body ratio and thickness affect perceived size. Tom’s Guide uses a broader editorial rule of screens under 6.5 inches and includes flip-style foldables. Those different definitions help explain why a modern compact phone can still have a 6.1- or 6.3-inch screen.
For one-handed handling and pocket fit, compare the phone’s width and height as well as its display diagonal. A large screen can fit into a relatively small body, and two phones with similar screen sizes may feel different in the hand. The dimensions below are Notebookcheck’s Q2 2026 specifications; they describe the listed models, not every regional variant.

Best small Android phone: Samsung Galaxy S26
The Galaxy S26 is a strong starting point if you want Android in a conventional, narrow-body flagship. Notebookcheck lists it at 71.7 mm wide and 149.6 mm tall, with a 6.3-inch display and a weight of 167 g. Its 7.2 mm thickness makes it the thinnest of the three slab phones in the table.
Choose it if you want a current Samsung flagship rather than the smallest possible handset. As with any phone in this class, confirm local pricing, availability, warranty and carrier compatibility; a single worldwide price or stock picture is not established here.

Best small iPhone overall: Apple iPhone 17
The iPhone 17 has the same listed height as the Galaxy S26 and is just 0.2 mm narrower, but it weighs 10 g more. Notebookcheck lists a 6.3-inch display and dimensions of 71.5 × 149.6 × 7.95 mm. GSMArena describes its display and camera upgrades positively and characterizes it as a well-rounded compact iPhone.

It is the more natural choice if you want a standard iPhone experience and place value on those display and camera improvements. Apple’s iPhone 17 specifications page is the manufacturer reference; consult the details for your region rather than assuming every variant is identical.
Best shorter, lower-cost iPhone option: Apple iPhone 17e
At 146.7 mm tall, the iPhone 17e is shorter than the iPhone 17 and Galaxy S26. Notebookcheck lists it with a 6.1-inch screen, a 71.5 mm width and a 170 g weight. PhoneArena positions it as a compact affordable iPhone, while noting its simpler camera setup and 60 Hz screen as trade-offs.

Should you consider a compact foldable?
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7
The Galaxy Z Flip7 is worth considering if your priority is a phone that closes to a shorter shape for a pocket or bag. It should not be compared as though it were an ordinary slab: a folded handset is thicker, and foldable screen, battery and durability considerations differ. Tom’s Guide includes flip-style foldables in its broad compact-phone approach; Notebookcheck also treats foldable thickness as part of how compact a phone feels.

Choose this form factor for its folding design and closed size, not because it is necessarily easier to use one-handed. Check the folded and unfolded dimensions, along with local availability and warranty terms, before deciding.

How to choose the right small phone
- Decide on the form. Pick a conventional slab if you want a single continuous screen and familiar handling. Consider a flip foldable if closing to a shorter shape is more useful than keeping a thin profile.
- Check width and height. Compare the body measurements, not just screen diagonal. Width often shapes grip; height affects reach and pocket fit.
- Choose your platform and price tier. Narrow the list to iOS or Android, then decide whether you need a flagship or would accept a simpler camera and display to target a lower-cost model.
- Set your priorities. Compare battery life and charging, camera flexibility, operating system and support needs. Small or thin designs can have limited battery capacity, while cheaper phones commonly make camera or chipset compromises.
- Verify the exact local version. Check regional price, stock, warranty and carrier compatibility immediately before purchase; none has one worldwide answer.

For a compact Android flagship, the Galaxy S26 is a compelling choice on dimensions and weight. For a well-rounded compact iPhone, consider the iPhone 17; for a shorter iPhone with a simpler camera and 60 Hz display, consider the iPhone 17e.
