Bookshelf.js is a Node.js ORM built on Knex. To get started, choose a database, install Bookshelf, Knex, and that database’s driver, initialize Knex, and pass its instance to Bookshelf. Then define models for your tables and add relation methods that match your schema.

How Bookshelf.js and Knex fit together

Knex builds and executes SQL queries for a configured database client. Bookshelf adds an ORM layer—models and relationship handling—on top of an initialized Knex instance. Bookshelf’s project documentation names PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQLite3 as database families it is designed for. Its feature list includes transactions, eager and nested-eager loading, polymorphic associations, and one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many relations. Bookshelf project README

The separation matters: configure the database connection in Knex, then give that Knex instance to Bookshelf. The API reference describes construction with a Knex instance. Bookshelf API reference

Choose a database and verify package compatibility

Start with the database your application already uses or can operate reliably. The documented choices are PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQLite3; the documentation does not establish a current version matrix or a performance winner among them. Consider your deployment environment, operational needs, existing data, and any database-specific features your application requires.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Install Bookshelf, Knex, and the driver that corresponds to your chosen database. The official homepage gives pg, mysql, and sqlite3 as driver examples, but these are documentation examples, not a guarantee that a particular combination of package versions is supported today. Bookshelf homepage

Check the current Bookshelf package metadata and release history, and confirm the precise Bookshelf, Knex, and driver combination before relying on it. The npm listing reports Bookshelf 1.2.0 and a last publish six years ago; a pull request dated July 22, 2026 proposes a Knex 2.5.1 update, but an open pull request does not prove a change merged or shipped. These details establish that package metadata and documentation are old—not whether the project is abandoned, insecure, or compatible with a specific current dependency. Knex’s current documentation can help with Knex itself, but it cannot establish which Knex versions Bookshelf supports. For exact compatibility, consult Bookshelf’s installed package metadata, release history, compatibility tests, or maintainer guidance. Knex project repository

Initialize Knex and Bookshelf once

The setup pattern is to create a Knex client with the selected database client and connection configuration, then pass it to Bookshelf. The following illustrates that relationship; it is not a verified, copy-paste compatibility recipe for current package versions or every database’s configuration:

const knex = require('knex')({
  client: 'your-database-client',
  connection: {/* your connection details */}
});

const bookshelf = require('bookshelf')(knex);

Use the client name and connection format required by the installed Knex version and chosen driver. Keep the resulting Bookshelf instance in a shared module or application composition point, then import it where models are defined. The official homepage recommends reusing the instance because it creates a connection pool; creating independent instances in multiple model modules can multiply pools and complicate connection management. Define a model for a database table

A Bookshelf model maps to a table. Register it with bookshelf.model, provide its tableName, and add methods for associations as needed. In the example below, Posts is a model name that must also be registered with Bookshelf:

Declare relations that match your schema

Relation methods describe associations in your application; they do not replace the tables and keys that make those associations possible. For a one-to-many association, the related table typically needs a foreign-key column pointing to the parent record. A many-to-many association requires a join table with foreign-key columns linking the two related tables. Bookshelf’s tutorial illustrates that join-table structure. Bookshelf many-to-many tutorial

A model can expose a many-to-many relation with belongsToMany. The official homepage demonstrates fetching a user and nested related data using withRelated:

const Post = bookshelf.model('Post', {
  tableName: 'posts',

  tags() {
    return this.belongsToMany(Tag);
  }
});

User.where({ id: userId }).fetch({
  withRelated: ['posts.tags']
});

Adapt table names, foreign keys, and relation options to the actual schema; the example shows the API shape, not a complete schema definition. The official guides index lists material on one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-many, and polymorphic associations, along with models, events, parsing, and formatting. It also characterizes the guide content as limited, so treat it as an introduction rather than a comprehensive current reference. Bookshelf guides

Close the connection pool in short-lived scripts

A Knex pool can keep a short-lived Node.js process running after its work is complete. For command-line scripts, close the pool when the database work ends. Bookshelf’s homepage documents calling .destroy(cb) on bookshelf.knex or on the Knex instance itself. Bookshelf homepage

In real code, make cleanup run on both success and failure—for example, with a finally block around the work:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
async function main() {
  try {
    // Perform database work here.
  } finally {
    await bookshelf.knex.destroy();
  }
}

For a long-running application, manage the shared pool as part of the application’s startup and shutdown lifecycle rather than destroying it after each model operation.
