Before installing it, check that your Bash version matches the project branch: the current branch targets Bash 5.2 and higher. You can start a session with bash --debugger or the bashdb command, and you can also enter the debugger from inside a script.
What bashdb does
The Bash Debugger Project describes bashdb as a source-code debugger for Bash. Its command syntax follows gdb, making it useful for stepping through a script and examining how execution proceeds rather than relying only on added echo statements. The project documentation also lists source-code syntax colorization, command completion, terminal handling, smart evaluation, and additional stepping control. The project README says, “Here, we have a debugger for Bash 5.2 and higher.” That describes the maintained repository’s current branch, not the minimum Bash version supported by every bashdb branch. The repository directs users of older Bash versions to other branches; check the repository for the branch that matches your environment.
Check Bash compatibility before installing
Do not confuse the debugger’s release number with the Bash version it supports. For example, Homebrew lists bashdb version 5.2-1.2.0; the repository separately describes the current branch as supporting Bash 5.2 and higher. Confirm the Bash interpreter that will run your script, and verify that your Bash build supports debugging. If you use an older Bash version, consult the project’s branch information rather than assuming the current branch will work.

Choose an installation route
Use a package manager
For macOS users with Homebrew, the formula currently documents this command:
brew install bashdb
Homebrew lists version 5.2-1.2.0 at its bashdb formula page. Package versions and platform availability can change, so check that page or your own distribution’s package source for the current status. Availability in one package manager does not establish availability in another distribution’s official repositories.

Install from source
The bashdb reference documentation describes installation from a package or from source. Follow the instructions for the branch and Bash version you intend to use in the installation documentation. Avoid mixing instructions from different branches, particularly if your system uses Bash older than 5.2.

bash --debugger -- bash-script-name script-arg1 script-arg2
Replace bash-script-name with your script and add its normal arguments afterward. The -- separates Bash options from the script name and arguments. This invocation can be preferable when the target script’s identity in the call stack or its $0 value matters, because the alternative bashdb launcher sources the target script.

Launch with bashdb
The documented command form is:
bashdb [bashdb-opts] -- bash-script-name script-arg1 script-arg2
Put any bashdb options before --, then give the script path and its arguments. The command reference explains that the launcher arranges debugging by sourcing support code and then the target script.

Enter the debugger from a script
A third option is to source the debugger’s trace support from the script and call _Dbg_debugger at the point where you want to begin debugging. This is useful when you want to enter a session at a particular stage rather than start at the beginning. Consult the project’s repository instructions for the appropriate support-file setup.
Know the behavioral trade-offs
- Execution is slower. The command reference says bashdb intercepts statements, which adds some overhead while the script runs.
- The launcher can affect script context. When the target is sourced,
$0can appear asbashdb, and the debugger can appear in the call stack. The manual suggests usingbash --debuggerwhen that distinction matters. - Editor integration details are limited. The project home page says plugins are available for VSCode and JetBrains, but their current compatibility and maintenance status are not established there. Check the integration’s own current documentation before relying on it.
