To use it, install the zoxide binary and then initialize it in your shell; installing the program alone does not add the z command to your current session. Its interactive zi command is optional and requires fzf.
What zoxide does
The zoxide project describes it in its README as “a smarter cd command, inspired by z and autojump.” Instead of requiring you to type a full path every time, zoxide remembers directory visits and ranks matching paths. A query such as z foo jumps to a high-ranked directory whose path matches foo.
It is useful when you regularly move among project folders or other frequently visited locations. It complements familiar shell navigation rather than requiring you to abandon paths, parent-directory movement, or the previous-directory shortcut.
Install zoxide and connect it to your shell
There are two steps: install the binary for your platform, then initialize zoxide in the shell you actually use. The project README lists package-manager installation routes for Linux/WSL, macOS, Windows, BSD, and Android; use its current platform-specific instructions because package availability can change: zoxide README and installation instructions.

After installing, add the initialization command for your shell to its configuration file. The README’s examples include:

eval "$(zoxide init bash)" - Fish:
zoxide init fish | source
For Zsh, initialize zoxide after compinit if you want its completions to work. Shell configuration file locations vary by setup, so follow the relevant shell and platform instructions in the README. Once you have added the command, open a fresh shell or reload that shell’s configuration. Then the z command should be available in the initialized session.

Use z to jump to a directory
Start with a distinctive part of a directory name. These examples are documented by the project; the match depends on the directories zoxide has recorded on your machine.

If a query does not take you where you expect, try a more specific term or use the full path. zoxide chooses among directories it has recorded, so its ranking reflects your own directory history rather than a universal list.

Use zi for interactive selection
If you have fzf installed, zi foo opens an interactive selection for matching directories. This is helpful when a short query returns several plausible destinations and you want to choose one rather than accept the top-ranked match.
fzf is not required for ordinary z queries. The zoxide README identifies fzf as optional and lists version 0.51.0 as the minimum supported version; it is used for interactive selection and completions.

Adjust zoxide’s behavior
Most users can begin with the defaults. If your workflow calls for a different command name, update policy, or database location, zoxide provides these controls:
--cmdchanges the command name used for zoxide’s jump commands. In particular,--cmd cdreplacescd; make that choice deliberately because it changes the familiar command’s behavior.--hooksets when directory scores are updated:none,prompt, orpwd, which is the documented default._ZO_DATA_DIRchanges the database location._ZO_EXCLUDE_DIRSexcludes paths from the database._ZO_RESOLVE_SYMLINKSenables resolving symlinks before directory entries are added._ZO_MAXAGEconfigures the aging algorithm that caps the database; its documented default is10000.
Set options according to the project’s configuration documentation and the initialization method for your shell: zoxide README.

Fix common setup and completion issues
zis not found: Confirm that the binary is installed and that you added the matchingzoxide initcommand to the configuration for the shell you launched. Reload the configuration or start a fresh shell.- Zsh completions are missing: Put zoxide initialization after
compinit. If completions still do not appear, the README notes that rebuilding the completions cache may be needed; use its current Zsh-specific steps. - Space+Tab completion does not work in Warp: Warp supplies its own completions and does not support zoxide’s Space+Tab completion feature.
ziis unavailable: Check that fzf is installed and meets the README’s minimum supported version. You can still use ordinaryzjumps without fzf.
Integrations and migration
The project documents integrations with file managers, launchers, editors, and tmux session managers, distinguishing native support from plugin-based integrations. Those integrations are not all part of the core command; check the README for the specific application and its current setup instructions.
If you are switching from another directory-jump utility, the README also documents import commands for atuin, autojump, fasd, z, z.lua, and zsh-z. It does not provide a measured performance comparison, so choose based on shell support, matching and ranking behavior, migration needs, interactive selection, and configuration rather than an assumed speed advantage.
