If a scammer has your password, treat it as stolen credentials: secure the affected account, change every reused copy, and use the provider’s official recovery process if you’re locked out. The steps are the same whether or not AI was involved; official guidance on phishing and account takeovers does not establish a separate AI-specific recovery process.
Secure the account first
Use a device you trust. Do not follow links or call numbers in the suspicious message; open the service’s official app or type a web address you already know. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends contacting an organization through a website, phone number, or email address you know is genuine when checking a suspicious message. FTC phishing guidance.
If you can still sign in
- Change the affected account’s password to a strong, unique password. The FTC’s advice is direct: “Create a new, strong password for the account that was compromised.”
- Change that password anywhere else you reused it. Start with your email account, which may be used to reset other passwords, then check financial, payment, work, social, tax, and shopping accounts.
- Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA), also called multifactor authentication (MFA), for the affected account. Add it to your email and other sensitive accounts as well.
Changing a password does not necessarily sign out an attacker from existing sessions. Once you have access, use the service’s option to sign out other devices or sessions if available.
If you’re locked out
Go directly to the provider’s official account-recovery instructions, using its app or a known web address. The FTC’s guide to recovering a hacked email or social media account links to recovery routes for common services. Do not give the scammer a one-time verification code or use a recovery link they sent you.
#1 Best Overall
- ✅ PROTECT ONLINE ACCOUNTS – A password manager, two-factor security key, and secure communication token in one, OnlyKey can keep your accounts safe even if your computer or a website is compromised. OnlyKey is open source, verified, and trustworthy.
- ✅ UNIVERSALLY SUPPORTED – Works with all websites including Twitter, Facebook, GitHub, and Google. Onlykey supports multiple methods of two-factor authentication including FIDO2 / U2F, Yubico OTP, TOTP, Challenge-response.
- ✅ PORTABLE PROTECTION – Extremely durable, waterproof, and tamper resistant design allows you to take your OnlyKey with you everywhere.
- ✅ PIN PROTECTED – The PIN used to unlock OnlyKey is entered directly on it. This means that if this device is stolen, data remains secure, after 10 failed attempts to unlock all data is securely erased.
- ✅ EASY LOG IN –No need to remember multiple passwords because by plugging OnlyKey to your computer, it automatically inputs your username and password. It works with Windows, Mac OS, Linux, or Chromebook, just press a button to login securely!
After you regain access, check what changed
Work through the provider’s security and account settings. Look for unfamiliar sign-ins, messages or posts you did not send, unexpected password-reset notices, and changes to your username or password. Check that the recovery email address and phone number belong to you, and remove any unfamiliar recovery details.
Sign out other active sessions or devices where the service offers that control, then enable 2FA if you have not already done so. If your account may have sent scam messages, warn the affected contacts through another channel so they do not trust links or requests that appear to come from you.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
These signs can indicate account takeover, but they do not prove how an attacker got access. The FTC lists unfamiliar logins, changed recovery information, login trouble, and messages you did not send among possible signs in its account-recovery guidance.
Choose an authentication method you can recover
MFA adds another check beyond a password, making a stolen password alone less likely to be enough. CISA explains the role of MFA in More than a Password. Turn it on for email and sensitive accounts first, then use it on other services that support it.

| Method | What to know |
|---|---|
| Security key | The FTC describes physical security keys as the strongest 2FA method it covers. They use encryption to confirm the key is associated with your account. The account must support the key, and you should keep a recovery route in case the key is lost. FTC’s 2FA guide. |
| Authenticator app | An app is another 2FA option. It avoids relying on text messages to a phone number and is less exposed to email-account compromise than codes delivered by email. Check the provider’s supported methods and plan for account recovery if you lose access to the app. FTC’s 2FA guide. |
| SMS or email codes | These are options where supported, but text messages can be exposed to SIM swapping, while email codes depend on keeping the email account secure. If you use email for recovery or codes, protect that account with a unique password and MFA. FTC’s 2FA guide. |
A password manager can help create and store unique passwords, reducing the risk that one stolen password opens multiple accounts. It does not recover a compromised account or replace the provider’s recovery steps. The FTC also recommends unique passwords in its account-protection guidance.
Report the scam and any identity misuse
- Report the scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- If someone is using your personal information, use IdentityTheft.gov for a recovery plan tailored to identity theft.
- If a bank, payment, or other financial account may be affected, contact the institution using the phone number or website you know is official.
Decide whether your device needs attention
A stolen password by itself does not show that your phone or computer has malware. If the scammer also gained remote access, persuaded you to install an app or attachment, or otherwise controlled the device, update its security software and run a scan. If you need help, contact the device maker or a trusted technical-support provider through a known channel. The FTC includes device steps in its advice for people who were scammed.

What the “AI-powered” label does—and does not—tell you
The label alone does not establish what tools the scammer used or how the password was obtained. Official guidance addresses phishing, stolen account information, and account recovery generally; it does not establish that AI changes the recovery steps. Focus on containing the credential theft and checking for account misuse rather than assuming the scam involved a particular AI technique.
