I Ching apps differ in what they do with a cast: some lead with conversational AI, some describe AI as a way to contextualize a reading selected by an algorithm, and others focus on classical texts, casting tools, or chart details. Choose by checking the named source text, how the app handles your cast, whether AI is optional, and what the listing says about offline use and privacy. The examples below come from developer-provided store descriptions, not hands-on testing or independent ratings.
What to compare before choosing an I Ching app
- AI’s role: Does it generate an interpretation, explain a reading selected by another process, or answer follow-up questions? Can you read the result without AI?
- Text and commentary: Look for a named translation, visible source passages, line texts, and commentary. An AI explanation is not the same thing as a classical text.
- Casting: Check whether the app offers a simulated method, lets you enter lines from a physical cast, or provides multiple methods.
- Privacy and access: Treat claims about local storage, offline use, and syncing as developer statements. Consult the app’s current privacy disclosure and check offline behavior on your own device.
- Price and access: Store pages may describe free access, trials, or in-app purchases. Check the current listing for your platform and region for price and recurring-charge terms.
These distinctions matter more than a broad claim that an app is “AI-powered” or “traditional.” Store descriptions explain what developers say their products do; they do not establish divinatory validity, translation quality, or comparative AI reliability.
How the listed apps describe their AI and texts
These are representative examples from a broad search, not a ranked or exhaustive survey. Platform, region, app version, and store descriptions may differ.
I Ching AI (iOS)
The listing presents guided AI readings and follow-up questions, with Wilhelm/Baynes or Confucian commentaries available on request. It says the app uses OpenAI’s ChatGPT API and lists several languages. The listing’s statement, “Nothing is stored on our servers,” is the developer’s privacy claim; check the current privacy policy and platform disclosure rather than treating it as independently verified.

The Original I Ching App (Google Play)
The developer describes a workflow in which its algorithm selects a canonical reading first and AI then expresses that reading in the user’s language and situation. Its listing offers automatic or manual casting and names Wilhelm/Baynes, James Legge, Zhou Yi, and a combined “Master” view. The developer says judgments and translations were checked against academic sources; that assertion has not been independently audited here. Its phrase “The AI never invents the oracle. It translates it.” is the developer’s characterization of the design, not a verified guarantee about model outputs.
I Ching by James Godwin (iOS)
The listing describes a reference library covering all 64 hexagrams, with James Legge as the basis of its core translation. It also lists guided three-coin casting, manual line entry, changing-line readings, and an on-device journal.

Plum Oracle (iOS)
Plum Oracle lists Plum Blossom, Six Yao, Numbers, and Manual methods. Its description also includes chart details, AI chat, offline casting, and history saved on the phone. It presents “Do they still care?” as an example question; that is an app-store example, not evidence about what users commonly ask. The feature and storage descriptions are listing claims, not independently tested findings.
Zhouyi I Ching Oracle (iOS)
The listing describes yarrow-stalk and number divination, original text and classical commentaries, and the option to ask several named AI assistants about a reading. It also lists reading history synced via iCloud and Apple Watch support.

Casting methods: simulated, manual, or both
The listings describe several ways to produce or record a cast. A method name alone does not tell you whether the app simulates a practice, guides you through it, or lets you record lines you cast yourself.

I Ching AI also describes casting a hexagram as part of its guided reading, but its listing information here does not specify a method. Descriptions do not establish that a simulated method reproduces every physical or historical practice. If you cast with coins or yarrow stalks yourself, look for manual line entry; coins and stalks are optional accessories, not universal app requirements.

Separate the oracle text from its interpretation
Named translations and classical passages help readers see what text underlies a result. The listings name Wilhelm/Baynes and Confucian commentaries for I Ching AI; Wilhelm/Baynes, James Legge, and Zhou Yi for The Original I Ching App; James Legge for I Ching by James Godwin; and original text with classical commentaries for Zhouyi I Ching Oracle. Plum Oracle’s description emphasizes casting, chart details, and AI chat rather than naming a translation in the information summarized here.
Before choosing an app for study, check whether it displays the Judgment, Image, changing-line text, and commentary as source passages, and which edition or translation it uses. A conversational explanation can be useful, but it should not be mistaken for the underlying classical wording.

Privacy, offline access, and changing store terms
Product listings make different claims: I Ching AI states that data is not stored on its servers; I Ching by James Godwin describes an on-device journal; Plum Oracle lists offline casting and phone-saved history; and Zhouyi I Ching Oracle lists iCloud-synced history. These statements describe different behaviors and should not be treated as interchangeable privacy guarantees. Review the current privacy policy and store disclosure for the app you install, and test offline functions on your own device.
Pricing, trials, subscriptions, and feature availability can change by platform and region. Check the live store page before installing or subscribing rather than relying on an older description.
