Grsync is a graphical interface for configuring and reusing rsync file-synchronization jobs. It can make common rsync options easier to manage, but it does not replace rsync, expose every rsync feature, or let you browse remote folders. Install rsync, set the source and destination carefully, and use a simulation run to review the planned changes before running a job that could overwrite or delete files.

What Grsync is—and what it is not

Grsync provides a GTK-based graphical front end for the rsync command-line utility. You configure a job in Grsync; rsync performs the underlying file transfer. The interface covers commonly used rsync options and also allows extra command-line switches, but it does not represent every capability of rsync. The Grsync project README and Debian’s Grsync manual describe that scope.

Rsync synchronizes files and directories, using a delta-transfer algorithm that can send differences rather than retransmitting whole files in applicable transfers. That makes Grsync useful for repeatable file-copy and synchronization tasks, such as backing up personal files to a network drive, copying a music collection to removable devices, or mirroring files between partitions. These are file-level workflows; the project examples do not establish Grsync as a disk-imaging or versioned-backup system. For background on transfer behavior, see the rsync project.

What you need before using it

  • Rsync installed: Grsync depends on the rsync program being installed on the system running the interface. Check the official Grsync download page or your operating system’s package manager for current availability and installation details.
  • A clear source and destination: Decide which directory is being copied from and which is being updated. The direction matters: a synchronization job is not automatically a two-way merge.
  • Access to the destination: For a local destination, connect or mount the drive or directory first. An external USB hard drive or SSD is one optional destination; it is not required by Grsync.
  • For remote transfers, working remote access: Rsync commonly uses SSH for remote transfers. The rsync documentation says rsync must be installed on both machines. Configure and verify SSH access separately; using a GUI does not remove those requirements. See the rsync manual.

How to use Grsync safely

  1. Choose or create a session. Set the source directory and destination directory or target, then select the rsync options needed for the job. Grsync sessions let you save settings for later reuse.
  2. Check the direction and options. Confirm the source is the material you intend to keep and the destination is where it should go. Pay particular attention to options that delete or overwrite destination files.
  3. Run a simulation first. Grsync documents simulation support. Use it to inspect the proposed operation before a real run, especially when deletion or overwriting may occur. A simulation is a review aid, not a substitute for checking the paths and options.
  4. Run the actual synchronization only after review. Once the planned changes make sense, execute the session and confirm the expected files appear at the destination.
  5. Save the configuration for recurring work. Reuse a named session for repeat jobs. The project also documents session sets for running multiple sessions, and a grsync-batch shell script for batch or crontab use.

Using Grsync with a remote destination

Grsync supports remote targets, but the project README explicitly says it does not support browsing remote folders. Do not expect to navigate a remote server’s directory tree in the interface. You need to know or enter the appropriate remote path and have the required remote access configured.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For typical remote-shell transfers, rsync uses SSH. The transport and authentication must work, and rsync must be available at both ends. Rsync also documents daemon-based transfers, but that is a distinct setup; do not assume a remote target will work merely because a path is entered in Grsync. The rsync manual explains supported transfer forms and remote requirements.

Saved sessions, batch jobs, and command-line options

Grsync is most helpful when a synchronization job has settings worth reusing. Its documented features include named saved settings, sets of sessions, simulation, and normal execution. Extra command-line switches are available for options not exposed directly in the standard interface, though using them assumes you understand the rsync option you are adding.

The Debian manual documents several startup flags for its packaged build: selecting a saved session at startup, -e to execute and close after a session, -s to keep the application open after successful execution, and -i to open an import-session dialog. These are documented for that distribution’s manual and may not describe every build. For exact behavior, consult the manual supplied with your installed version.

Download and compatibility checks

The available project material does not establish a current Grsync version or a complete operating-system support matrix. Before installing, check the official download page and the package listing for your distribution. The GitHub README notes that it may be outdated, so use it for the project’s general description rather than as a definitive current release or compatibility listing.
