Google DeepMind’s first prominent NHS health project was not an AI diagnostic system. Announced in 2016 with the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, Streams was a clinician-facing app intended to alert staff to possible acute kidney injury (AKI) and make relevant patient information easier to access. The partnership brought DeepMind’s healthcare ambitions into focus, but it also prompted a major dispute over the use of identifiable patient data.

What was DeepMind Health’s NHS app?

On November 22, 2016, DeepMind announced a five-year partnership with the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. Its first named project, Streams, was a mobile app for clinicians. It was designed to alert staff when test results suggested a patient might have acute kidney injury and to bring relevant clinical information together for the care team. DeepMind’s announcement described possible future expansion to other conditions and features; that was a plan, not confirmation those capabilities were delivered.

The practical aim was to get existing information to the clinicians who needed it and help them coordinate care. Royal Free spokesperson David Myers, a patient governor and kidney patient, said in the Trust’s account: “When treating kidney injury, speed matters – and yet every day patients across the UK suffer serious and avoidable problems because the system isn’t able to get their urgent test results to renal clinicians fast enough.” This was Myers’s statement, not an independently quantified finding.

DeepMind’s 2016 launch announcement projected that the fully built system could reduce alert times from hours to seconds and redirect more than half a million hours each year from administration to patient care at the Royal Free. Those were company forecasts, not independently verified outcome measurements. The company’s description of Streams also presented the project as a tool to support clinical work, rather than an autonomous diagnosis system.

Why doesn’t Streams use AI?

The name DeepMind Health and the 2016 announcement’s broader healthcare ambitions could suggest an AI product. But the Royal Free said Streams did not use AI or machine learning; it described the app as a simple decision tree used across the NHS. DeepMind’s later explanation says conversations with clinicians shifted the project toward the immediate workflow problem: getting existing test results and alerts to staff in a usable way. DeepMind said it did not conduct AI research or development with the Royal Free.

Dominic King of DeepMind wrote in November 2017: “By getting existing patient data to the right nurse or doctor more quickly and simply, Streams gives them more time to focus on patients – without yet relying on AI.” The distinction matters: DeepMind’s broader health-AI ambitions should not be confused with what this particular NHS app did.

Why was the Royal Free patient-data deal controversial?

The dispute centered on whether identifiable patient information could be used to test Streams on the legal basis chosen, and whether that use matched what patients could reasonably expect. In an August 2019 statement, National Data Guardian Dame Fiona Caldicott said implied consent for direct care was not an appropriate basis for sharing data about 1.6 million patients for the testing purpose. She reported that the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) found the Royal Free had not complied with data protection law and required changes, including an independent audit. Caldicott’s statement emphasized the importance of patients’ perspective: “It is my firm view that it is the patient’s perspective that is most important when judgements are being made about the use of their confidential information.”

The Trust later said the ICO recognized in July 2019 that it had completed the required actions and that there were no further outstanding concerns about current Streams processing. The Royal Free also said patient data remained under its control and DeepMind processed it only on the Trust’s instructions. Those are the Trust’s account of the closeout and its data arrangements; they do not erase the earlier finding reported by the National Data Guardian.

What happened to DeepMind Health and Streams?

In November 2018, DeepMind announced that the Streams team would join Google, remain in London, and continue to make decisions about patient-data use with NHS partners. A status note on the same announcement says DeepMind Health joined the Google Health family on September 18, 2019. The announcement describes the organisational transition. It does not establish that DeepMind Health remains a standalone consumer service, or provide definitive evidence of Streams’ present-day operational availability.
