For a small tear in compatible jacket fabric, a fabric repair patch is a straightforward home fix: clean and dry the area, cover the tear with a rounded patch that extends at least 1/4 inch beyond it on every side, then press it firmly in place. Patagonia’s instructions are specifically for small holes in down jackets; check your garment’s fabric and care label before using adhesive.
Check whether a patch is suitable
Adhesive repair tape can work on down or synthetic-insulated jackets and synthetic fabrics, including some waterproof shells. Patagonia says its gear repair tape will not stick to natural or stretchy fabrics, so do not assume it is suitable for every Patagonia garment. If you are unsure what the fabric is, check the care label or ask Patagonia before applying a patch.
A small surface tear is a reasonable candidate for a DIY repair. A tear that is large, close to a seam or closure, or needs a less visible or more durable finish is better assessed by Patagonia or a repair professional. Patagonia does not specify a universal tear-length cutoff. See its Product Repair Form or, in Europe, its Product Repair & DIY Tutorials page for repair information.
What you need
- Fabric repair tape suitable for jacket fabric, such as Gear Aid Tenacious Tape, or a compatible ready-made patch. Patagonia also sells a Worn Wear Repair Patch kit described as containing four Tenacious Tape patches for jacket and gear tears; check the product page for current availability.
- Isopropyl alcohol to clean the area.
- Scissors to trim loose threads and shape the patch.
- A hard plastic card, optional, to smooth the patch.
- A warm iron, optional, for gentle warmth if the fabric’s care instructions allow it.
Apply the patch
- Start with a dry jacket. Inspect the tear and trim dangling threads. If down feathers are poking out, work them back inside rather than pulling them out. Patagonia’s How to Fix a Small Hole in a Down Jacket guide, dated May 5, 2026, says: “Don’t pull out any of the feathers that emerge.”
- Clean the area. Wipe the fabric around the damage with isopropyl alcohol to remove dirt, grit or oil. Let it evaporate completely before patching.
- Cut the patch. Choose a piece large enough to cover the tear and overlap it by at least 1/4 inch on every side. Round the corners so they are less likely to snag or peel.
- Position and press. Peel off the backing without touching the adhesive. Center the patch over the tear and press from the middle outward to reduce air bubbles. Smooth it with a hard plastic card if needed.
- Add gentle warmth only if appropriate. Patagonia says hand warmth or a warm—not hot—iron can help the adhesive adhere. Avoid excessive heat, especially on synthetic fabric, and follow the garment’s care instructions.
- Wait before washing. You can wear the jacket after applying the patch, but wait at least 24 hours before washing it.
When to use Patagonia’s repair service
Choose professional assessment if the fabric is incompatible with adhesive, the damage is beyond a simple surface patch, or the repair needs a cleaner or more durable finish. Patagonia says repair work is covered in most cases and lists $15 round-trip shipping for U.S. mail-in repairs; these details can change, so confirm the current process and cost on the repair form before sending a jacket. Availability and terms may differ by region.
