The best premium wireless headphones depend on what you mean by “immersive”: strong passive isolation, active noise cancellation (ANC), spatial processing, or simply a presentation you enjoy for hours. The Sony WH-1000XM6 is a strong all-round candidate, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) is a compelling choice when noise cancellation comes first, and the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless stands out for its advertised battery life and sound-personalization options. None is the universal best for every listener or setting.

Which premium wireless headphones should you consider?

Model Best fit What to weigh
Sony WH-1000XM6 Mixed use when you want a strong balance of sound, ANC, comfort, and features What Hi-Fi? recommends it as a leading all-round over-ear Bluetooth option. Its guide notes that it lacks aptX HD and USB-C audio. Sony’s processor and microphone details are manufacturer claims, not independent performance measurements.
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) Travel or commuting where blocking outside noise is the priority Tom’s Guide’s 2026 noise-cancelling roundup favors it for ANC, but other sound and build considerations appear in the publication’s broader headphone guide. Its Immersive Audio mode is a separate preference, not an automatic sound-quality upgrade.
Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless Listeners interested in EQ and sound personalization, or fewer charging stops Sennheiser advertises up to 60 hours of playback, but the maximum is not a guarantee for every setting or use pattern.

These are different strengths rather than a lab-matched ranking. A guide’s top pick reflects that publication’s priorities, while a manufacturer’s battery or feature figure is not a promise of your result.

What does “immersive” mean for headphones?

  • Isolation: A well-fitting earcup can reduce some outside sound passively, even when ANC is off.
  • ANC: Active noise cancellation uses microphones and processing to reduce surrounding noise. It can make music easier to hear on a flight or commute, but ANC quality and listening quality are distinct questions.
  • Spatial processing: A headphone may process stereo audio to create a more spacious or cinema-like presentation. The effect is a matter of taste and does not necessarily improve fidelity.
  • Sound presentation: Some listeners prefer a wide-feeling, detailed, or bass-forward character without spatial processing. Reviews and, where possible, a personal audition are more useful than a frequency-response range alone; Tom’s Guide notes that endpoints do not describe how a headphone sounds across the range.

For example, Tom’s Guide’s reviewer preferred to leave Bose Immersive Audio off because it made the sound too thin for that reviewer’s taste. Treat that as an individual review judgment, not a universal finding.

How the three finalists differ

Sony WH-1000XM6: the all-round option

What Hi-Fi? highlights the WH-1000XM6’s sound, ANC, comfort, LC3/LE Audio/Auracast support, and spatial processing. Its 360 Reality Audio Upmix for Cinema can apply spatial processing to stereo content. That feature may suit movies or other listening when you want a more expansive effect, but it is not a substitute for judging the headphones’ regular sound with the feature off.

Sony WH-1000XM5 Premium Noise Cancelling Wireless Headphones, Black
  • PREMIUM NOISE CANCELLATION: Two processors control 8 microphones for unprecedented noise cancellation. With Auto NC Optimizer, noise canceling is automatically optimized based on your wearing conditions and environment.
  • MAGNIFICENT SOUND: Engineered to perfection with the new Integrated Processor V1.
  • CRYSTAL CLEAR HANDS-FREE CALLING: 4 beamforming microphones, precise voice pickup, and advanced audio signal processing.
  • LONG BATTERY LIFE: Up to 30-hour battery life with quick charging (3 min charge for 3 hours of playback).
  • ULTRA-COMFORTABLE: Lightweight design with soft fit leather.

Sony says the WH-1000XM6 uses a QN3 noise-cancelling processor that is “7x faster than the QN1” in the WH-1000XM5, alongside an adaptive system that optimizes 12 microphones in real time. Those are Sony’s product claims. TechRadar lists the headphones at 254 g and specifies 30 hours of battery life with ANC on; these are guide specifications, not a result from a matched independent test cited here.

Check your device and wired-listening needs before choosing it: What Hi-Fi? notes that the model does not support aptX HD or USB-C audio. Bluetooth codec support and behavior depend on both the headphones and the source device, so do not assume every phone or computer will use the same connection features.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen): prioritize noise cancellation

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 noise-cancelling guide names the second-generation QuietComfort Ultra its leading noise-cancelling pick. Its broader headphone guide also praises the ANC while raising reservations about sound and build quality. That difference in emphasis is useful: if reducing outside noise is your main goal, Bose deserves close consideration, but the same editorial judgment does not establish it as the best-sounding or best-built choice for every listener.

Try Bose Immersive Audio both on and off if you can. Spatial processing is optional, and the cited reviewer’s preference for the mode off shows why it should be judged by your own listening rather than treated as a must-have.

Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless: personalization and a long battery claim

Sennheiser lists a 42 mm transducer system, adaptive ANC, a transparency mode, EQ and presets, and sound personalization on its US product page. It also lists a padded headband, cushioned ear pads, and four beamforming microphones. These are manufacturer-described features; they do not by themselves establish how the sound or fit will work for you.

Sennheiser advertises up to 60 hours of playback and says a ten-minute fast charge provides six additional hours. Treat both as company claims rather than guaranteed everyday outcomes: ANC, volume, connection, and other settings can affect endurance. The box contents listed by Sennheiser include a carrying case, USB-C charging cable, and 1.2 m auxiliary cable.

How to choose for your listening habits

For flights and noisy commutes

Put ANC near the top of your checklist, then consider how the headphones sound with ANC enabled and whether the fit stays comfortable over a long trip. Bose is the clearest starting point if cancellation is your leading criterion, based on Tom’s Guide’s 2026 noise-cancelling recommendation. Compare it with Sony if you want a broader mix of listening and feature priorities.

For quiet home listening

Focus on the sound character you enjoy, EQ flexibility, and whether any spatial mode adds something you like. Sony’s cinema upmix and Sennheiser’s personalization options provide different ways to shape the experience, but neither feature guarantees a better presentation. Listen with processing off as well as on.

For mixed use

Balance sound preference, ANC, comfort, controls, call needs, portability, and compatibility with your phone or computer. Sony is a reasonable all-round shortlist leader in What Hi-Fi?’s assessment; that is an editorial recommendation, not a claim that it will fit or sound best for everyone.

What to check before buying

  1. Match features to your source devices. Check codec support on both the headphones and the phone, tablet, or computer you use. If you need USB-C audio or a particular codec, verify that requirement against the model’s specifications rather than assuming all premium headphones provide it.
  2. Try the fit for more than a few minutes. Head shape, clamp pressure, heat, glasses, and session length change comfort. If an in-person try-on is not possible, look for a retailer return policy that gives you a practical way to assess fit.
  3. Compare battery claims on equal terms. Check whether a stated duration assumes ANC on or off and remember that a maximum manufacturer figure may not match your listening settings. Sony’s 30-hour ANC-on specification cited by TechRadar and Sennheiser’s up-to-60-hour manufacturer claim are not directly comparable test results.
  4. Test sound with your own material. Compare familiar music or films at a comfortable volume, with ANC and spatial effects toggled separately. A single reviewer’s preference can help identify what to audition, but cannot predict every listener’s taste.
  5. Consider the everyday details. Check how the case travels, how controls work, whether wired listening matters, and whether microphone and call features meet your needs. Sennheiser lists a case and auxiliary cable in the box; verify current package contents in your region before purchase.

Verdict by priority

Start with the Sony WH-1000XM6 if you want a premium mixed-use candidate with a broad feature set and a strong all-round editorial recommendation. Choose the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) for a noise-cancellation-first shortlist, while evaluating its sound and spatial mode independently. Consider the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless if its EQ and personalization features appeal and its battery claim suits your routine. Fit, listening preference, and device compatibility should make the final call.
