Use your bank or credit union’s official website or app to open and download the electronic statement, then keep the original in a secure place. To share it, verify the request independently and follow the recipient’s approved delivery instructions. Exact menus, file formats and accepted channels vary by institution and recipient.
Save the statement from your bank or credit union
- Open your bank’s official service. Use its app or reach its website through a bookmark, a known address you enter yourself, or another trusted source. Do not follow an unsolicited email or text link asking you to verify account information. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) advises caution with messages impersonating a bank; the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) likewise recommends not replying or clicking and contacting the institution through independently found contact details. - Find the statement or documents area. Open the relevant account and look for statements, documents or a similar section. Banks use different labels and layouts, so follow your institution’s instructions if the option is not obvious.
- Use the institution’s download or save option. Save the electronic document it provides rather than taking a screenshot. Not every institution offers the same download controls or file formats.
- Keep the original somewhere secure and retrievable. Choose a place you consider secure and can access when needed. FCAC guidance for federally regulated Canadian financial institutions says consumers who receive electronic financial documents should review them and save them securely for future access. Verify the request and delivery channel before sharing
Before sending a statement, confirm who needs it, why it is needed, and how the recipient wants to receive it. If a message unexpectedly asks for account details or directs you to a verification link, do not respond or click. Find the organization’s contact information independently and ask whether it made the request. CFPB advice for suspicious bank or credit-union messages is to contact the institution using a customer-service number found through a different source. Once the request is verified, use the recipient’s approved channel and follow its instructions for file format and delivery. There is no universally safest choice among email, a portal or another transfer method established by the sources cited here; the appropriate route depends on the recipient’s verified process.
Decide whether a connected financial-data service is appropriate
A service that connects to an account to retrieve financial information is different from sending a statement file once: it may receive account-data access that occurs once or continues over time, and may involve both the service you selected and a separate aggregator. CFPB guidance recommends checking the service’s legitimacy and considering the following before granting access. - What account information will the service access, and how often?
- Will it share the data with other companies?
- What will it store, and for how long?
- Does the service request payment permissions as well as data access?
- How can you stop access and request deletion of collected information?
The CFPB’s overview of the U.S. personal financial data rights final rule describes requirements concerning secure access to consumer data and privacy obligations for third parties. That regulatory overview does not tell you how to upload a statement to a particular recipient, and it is not a substitute for checking that recipient’s instructions. If you want to hide information, ask the recipient whether it accepts redacted statements and which fields, if any, may be covered. Requirements vary, and the sources cited here do not establish what a particular organization will accept. Keep the original unchanged in case you need it later, and share only the document and details the recipient actually requires if its process permits that.

If the statement option or sharing instructions are unclear
- No download option is visible: Contact the bank or credit union through its official app or independently verified website and ask how to obtain an electronic statement.
- The recipient’s preferred method is unclear: Contact that organization using verified contact details and ask for its accepted channel and file requirements before sending anything.
- You already received a suspicious request: Stop, do not use its links or reply with account information, and verify the request with the organization through an independent contact route.
