Plan a long stay on Ikaria around three decisions: secure lodging for the full period, match your arrival and departure to transport running on your exact dates, and choose a base that works with the way you will get around. Before committing, also check the entry and residence rules that apply to your nationality, purpose, and length of stay.

How do you get to Ikaria?

Ikaria has an airport near Faros at the island’s eastern end, plus ferry links serving the ports of Evdilos and Agios Kirykos. Visit Ikaria places the airport about 12 km from Agios Kirykos; that distance does not tell you how long a transfer will take. See Visit Ikaria’s airport information and its route guidance.

The Greek National Tourism Organisation lists flight durations of 55 minutes from Athens, 2 hours 15 minutes from Thessaloniki, and 55 minutes from Limnos. These are flight times, not total door-to-door journey times, and do not guarantee a flight on a particular day. Check the GNTO Ikaria page alongside live operator schedules.

Compare the whole journey, not just the flight or sailing

For your actual dates, compare available flights and ferries, connection time, transfer between the airport or port and your accommodation, and how much luggage or equipment you need to bring. If connecting a ferry and a flight, allow a buffer rather than relying on a tight transfer.

Visit Ikaria warns that schedules can change and advises confirming them before travel. Verify the operator’s current timetable and connection details before buying tickets; a general route description is not a date-specific schedule.

Where should you stay for several weeks or longer?

Ikaria’s destination directory includes rooms, villas, studios, apartments, and hotels, among other traditional and seaside lodging. Visit Ikaria recommends booking early, but the directory does not establish which properties have long-stay availability or what they charge for a multiweek or multimonth booking. Browse the Visit Ikaria accommodation directory, then contact properties directly about the complete period you need.

Get the full stay terms in writing

Do not assume that a short booking can be extended or that a nightly rate will apply unchanged to a longer stay. Before paying, confirm:

  • Exact arrival and departure dates, and whether the property can accommodate the entire period.
  • Total cost for the full stay, payment schedule, and any additional charges.
  • Cancellation and change terms, including what happens if transport dates shift.
  • Whether utilities, internet, cleaning, and any other services you need are included.
  • Whether the location suits your daily needs and your planned transport.

For a solo stay or an uncertain return date, ask the property what extension options exist and how much notice is required. Get any agreement on dates, price, and conditions in writing.

Do you need a car on Ikaria?

It depends on where you stay and how often you need to travel. Visit Ikaria describes the island’s road network as “extensive and difficult” and lists car and motorcycle hire, taxis, municipal buses, and walking as options. Its visitor guide says local buses operate in summer; it does not establish current routes or service dates for your travel period. Check the transport information and visitor guide before planning a car-free stay.

If you rent a vehicle

A car or motorcycle can make more places accessible, but you will need to be comfortable driving the island’s roads. Check current rental availability, total cost, collection arrangements, and whether the vehicle suits the roads and your plans. Do not assume a rental will be available on arrival without a booking.

If you plan to get around without a car

Choose lodging with your routine in mind, then confirm bus service for the season and locations you will use. Ask local accommodation providers about practical taxi arrangements and availability, but verify details for your dates rather than relying on a general expectation of frequent service. A car-free plan works best when your base and daily needs fit the transport actually available.

What should you check before a long stay?

Entry, residence, and work rules

Do not treat general short-stay information as permission to remain longer. The rules that apply depend on your nationality, purpose, intended duration, and current requirements. Check the relevant official Greek immigration or consular source for your individual situation before arranging an extended stay. The Visit Ikaria travel tips page is general visitor guidance, not an individual long-stay determination.

Healthcare and medicines

Visit Ikaria lists a general hospital in Agios Kirykos, local health centers, and private doctors, and identifies 112 as the European emergency number. Reconfirm local contacts before departure, check what your health insurance covers for the full period, and carry prescription details and enough information to arrange refills. A visitor guide does not establish that a particular traveler qualifies for public healthcare coverage. See the health information in Visit Ikaria’s travel tips.

Electricity and plug adapter

Visit Ikaria states that the electrical supply is 220/240 V at 50 Hz and uses European-style plugs. If your device has a different plug, pack a compatible European plug adapter. Check the input rating printed on each device: an adapter changes plug fit, not voltage. Consult the same travel tips page and your device labels before packing.

A practical planning order

  1. Set your dates and check eligibility. Confirm that your intended duration and purpose comply with the rules for your nationality.
  2. Find a base for the whole period. Compare location and accommodation type, and obtain the full dates, price, included services, and cancellation terms in writing.
  3. Check actual transport for your dates. Compare live flight and ferry options, connections, and transfers; leave a buffer for linked journeys.
  4. Match local mobility to your base. Book a suitable rental if you need one, or verify seasonal bus service and taxi arrangements for your routine.
  5. Prepare for daily needs. Confirm healthcare and insurance arrangements, carry prescription information, and check device power requirements.
