If you want the cast investment of Sakura Wars alongside tactical battles, start with Unicorn Overlord for configurable units and a large ensemble, or Fire Emblem: Three Houses for character-centered storytelling paired with turn-based tactics. Neither is a direct substitute: the 2020 English release of Sakura Wars combines LIPS relationship choices with action combat, not the tactical-RPG format often associated with the older games.
What makes Sakura Wars different?
In the 2020 English release, Sakura Wars links character interaction to an action-combat structure. SEGA describes its LIPS dialogue system as one where “what you say and how you say it has a profound impact on relationships off and on the battlefield.” The official site also says those bonds carry into each episode’s combat finale, while battles feature giant steam-powered mecha. SEGA’s official Sakura Wars website
That connection makes the conversations more than a break between fights. PlayStation Blog’s March 11, 2020 cast feature says choices can carry into story and combat, and may put the player on a path toward a character-specific ending. PlayStation Blog’s cast feature
So the key question is which part you want to keep: tactical combat, a sizable cast you can shape into a party, or relationships and character development that accompany battles. The games below match different parts of that mix rather than reproducing all of it.

Choose by the part of Sakura Wars you want to keep
For tactical-RPG combat and a large ensemble: Unicorn Overlord
Unicorn Overlord is the strongest fit if the tactical side matters most. ATLUS describes it as a tactical RPG with overworld exploration, decisions during battle stages, configurable unit tactics, and party customization. ATLUS also identifies a game-feature count of over 60 unique characters in its grand army. ATLUS’s official Unicorn Overlord page
That combination offers both battlefield planning and a cast large enough to make unit composition part of the appeal. The official product description does not establish a LIPS-like dialogue or romance system, however, so choose it for its combat-and-cast match rather than expecting Sakura Wars-style relationship branching.

Its grid-based, turn-based combat and academy setting make it a different kind of character-focused game from Sakura Wars. Consider it when the draw is getting to know a group and bringing them through tactical encounters, rather than recreating the 2020 game’s action combat or LIPS format.
For the particular LIPS-and-action combination: Sakura Wars
If your priority is the exact pairing of relationship-shaping dialogue and action battles, the 2020 English Sakura Wars remains the reference point in these recommendations. How to compare the closest matches
Use these four differences to decide what matters before picking a game:
- Combat: Sakura Wars (2020) uses action combat; Unicorn Overlord is a tactical RPG, and Fire Emblem: Three Houses has turn-based tactical RPG battles.
- How choices shape bonds and story: SEGA and PlayStation Blog describe relationship and story effects for Sakura Wars. The cited official descriptions of the alternatives establish their tactical and character-focused features, but do not establish equivalent dialogue branching or romance.
- Ensemble and unit management: ATLUS specifically describes configurable tactics, party customization, and over 60 unique characters as features of Unicorn Overlord. Nintendo’s listing establishes the student-focused ensemble in Three Houses; it does not give a comparable cast-size figure.
- Story structure and setting: Sakura Wars centers its LIPS-and-battle blend around its cast and mecha. Three Houses uses an academy setting, while Unicorn Overlord describes overworld exploration and a grand army. These are thematic and structural differences, not interchangeable versions of one story.
Which game should you play?
Pick Unicorn Overlord if tactical combat, unit configuration, and a sizable cast are your main priorities. Pick Fire Emblem: Three Houses if you want character-centered surroundings paired with turn-based tactical battles. Return to Sakura Wars if LIPS relationship choices and action combat are the combination you most want to preserve.
