Choose Celeste for demanding, precise platforming with adjustable assistance; choose Owlboy for flight, exploration, companions, and a story-led adventure. They share a platformer label, but their core pleasures are different: one puts the emphasis on carefully timed movement, while the other sends you through a world of airborne travel, dungeons, and battles.

Choose Owlboy if you want flight and exploration
Owlboy is the better fit if the appeal of a platformer is moving through a larger-feeling adventure rather than mastering a sequence of precise jumps. Flight is central to its identity, and the official descriptions pair it with ruins, dungeons, bosses, and companions who contribute as gunners. That mix gives the game an exploratory, adventure-led shape.
Its story follows Otus, a mute owl facing expectations and a threat from sky pirates. If you want a protagonist and setting to carry the journey alongside its action, that framing is a meaningful distinction from Celeste’s focused climb.

#1 Best Overall
- A narrative - driven, single - player adventure
Choose Celeste if you want precision platforming
Celeste is the clearer pick if you want movement itself to be the main challenge. Its jump, air-dash, and climb mechanics underpin more than 700 screens, according to Steam, while optional B-side chapters add further demanding platforming.
The challenge does not mean every player must use identical settings. The official changelog documents Assist Mode settings, Dash Assist, and control options. These are ways to tailor how you play, not a reason to describe the game as easy.
Rank #2
- A narrative-driven, single-player adventure like mom used to make, with a charming cast of characters and a touching story of self-discovery
- A massive mountain teeming with 700+ screens of hardcore platforming challenges and devious secrets
- Brutal B-side chapters to unlock, built for only the bravest mountaineers
- IGF “Excellence in Audio” finalist, with over 2 hours of original music led by dazzling live piano and catchy synth beats
- The physical edition includes: a mini-guidebook and mini-poster
Which one is harder?
Based on official descriptions, Celeste foregrounds hardcore precision platforming and optional high-difficulty B-sides, while Owlboy highlights challenging bosses and large dungeons. They test different skills, so there is no single useful difficulty ranking: expect Celeste to emphasize exact movement, and Owlboy to spread its challenges across exploration, bosses, and combat.

Start with the game that matches what you want to do moment to moment. Pick Owlboy for a flight-centered adventure with companions and dungeons; pick Celeste for a concentrated platforming challenge whose support options let you adjust the experience. Both are listed for Nintendo Switch in the official platform information, so Switch owners can choose by style rather than platform.
