Start with the listing, compare the card with an official reference image, and hold a loose card up to a bright light. Pokémon Support says counterfeit cards are often see-through, but that clue cannot prove a card is genuine or fake. Sealed booster packs need extra caution: Pokémon says counterfeits can be difficult to distinguish from real packs.
Check the listing before you buy
Read the description carefully and establish what the seller says the item is. Is it presented as an official Pokémon TCG card or product, or is it described as a replica, custom item, or metal card? A label does not make an unauthorized item official. Pokémon’s Japanese official site has warned about unauthorized merchandise using Pokémon TCG intellectual property sold under descriptions including replicas and metal cards.
Consider the price in context. Pokémon Support warns that a booster pack priced dramatically below its suggested retail price is a strong warning sign. Price alone, however, does not establish that a particular item is counterfeit. Pokémon Support also says it receives the highest reported instances of counterfeit sales from flea markets; that is the company’s reported experience, not evidence that every flea-market seller is suspect.
How to check an individual card
Compare its identity and appearance
Look up the card in the official Pokémon Trading Card Database and compare the reference image with the card you have or the listing photos. Check that you are comparing the same card, rather than relying on a general impression. TCGplayer’s guide also recommends checking a card against a reputable Pokémon TCG database.

Try the bright-light check
Hold the card up to a bright light. Pokémon Support says counterfeit cards are often easy to see through this way. Treat the result as one clue: the official guidance does not describe this as a definitive authentication test. A small bright LED flashlight can provide the light if needed, but it cannot authenticate a card on its own.
Ask a specialist if doubt remains
If the image comparison and light check leave questions—or the card is valuable—ask a shop that specializes in trading cards to evaluate it. The checks above are screening steps, not a guarantee of authenticity.

Why sealed booster packs require more caution
Pokémon Support says fake booster packs can be very difficult to distinguish from genuine ones. A pack’s appearance may therefore tell you less than you might expect; assess the listing and price as well as any available product images. A price dramatically below suggested retail is a warning sign, not proof that the pack is fake.
Reduce risk when buying online
- Read the full description and note whether the seller claims the item is official, original, a replica, or custom.
- Review the seller details and available photos before ordering. For a single card, compare the listing image with an official card reference.
- Keep the listing, seller details, order confirmation, and photos of the item that arrives. These records help you document what was offered and delivered if you need to raise a concern.
- For marketplace purchases, check the marketplace’s current buyer-protection terms directly. TCGplayer’s guide mentions its Buyer Safeguard, but its specific process and terms should be checked on the service because they may change.
What these checks can—and cannot—tell you
No single check in Pokémon’s consumer guidance guarantees that a card or sealed product is genuine. A bright-light result, a low price, or a mismatch in photos should prompt closer scrutiny, not substitute for an expert evaluation. The official guidance cited here does not provide a definitive checklist of fonts, set symbols, foil patterns, card stock, or edge details, so those features should not be treated here as authoritative pass-or-fail tests.
