To protect valuable Pokémon cards, handle them as little as practical, place each card in a supportive sleeve whose material is identified, and keep it in a clean, stable indoor location away from direct or intense light. These are conservative precautions based on general paper-preservation guidance—not a tested Pokémon-card storage standard or certification of any particular product.
Handle valuable cards as little as practical
Every unnecessary handling creates another opportunity for a card to be bent, scratched, or soiled. The Library of Congress says that proper care and handling is among the most effective, cost-efficient, and readily achieved preservation measures for collection items. - Decide where a card will go before taking it out of its current protection.
- Use a clean, clear work surface and avoid placing cards near food, drinks, or clutter.
- When inspecting or moving a card, hold it carefully by its edges rather than rubbing or pressing its surface.
Choose a sleeve and enclosure for support and known materials
Use an individual protective sleeve and an outer enclosure that supports the card rather than leaving it loose or vulnerable to bending. Check the maker’s material description and confirm that the sleeve is intended to fit the card. A broad term such as “archival” alone does not establish what the product is made from or prove compatibility with Pokémon cards.
For works on paper, the Library of Congress identifies polyester film sleeves stiff enough to support the paper as one example of a supportive enclosure. Its scrapbook and album guidance also names polyester, polypropylene, and polyethylene among plastics used in preservation measures. Those references concern paper collections; they are not tests, endorsements, or certifications of sleeves sold for trading cards. Collector guides sometimes recommend sleeves and rigid holders for valuable trading cards. That is a collector practice, not comparative conservation evidence: the cited collector guidance does not establish which format performs best over the long term. You can use a sleeve and a supportive outer holder if that suits your organization needs, but no one format can be called categorically best on the evidence available here.

Store cards in a stable, low-risk indoor location
Choose a clean indoor space with relatively steady conditions. Avoid places prone to leaks, dampness, or environmental extremes, including attics and basements. For works on paper, the Library of Congress recommends a cool environment (room temperature or below) and a relatively dry environment of about 35% relative humidity. That approximate figure is general paper-preservation guidance, not a proven target for Pokémon cards; the practical priority is avoiding dampness and major swings rather than assuming a particular number is card-specific.
A storage box or other enclosure can help organize cards and shield them from light and incidental contact, but it is not a guarantee against damage. Place it somewhere unlikely to be exposed to water, excessive heat, or large environmental changes.

Limit exposure to light
Keep stored cards out of direct sunlight and away from intense lighting. The Library of Congress recommends minimal exposure to all kinds of light for works on paper, and its paper-deterioration overview identifies light as a cause of photolytic damage. Applying that principle to the paper components of collectible cards is a reasoned preservation precaution, not the result of a Pokémon-card storage experiment.
