First check whether the lead message is actually present in the Telegram chat. If it is, Telegram or your phone is suppressing the alert; if it is missing, investigate the bot or integration that should have delivered it. These are separate failure paths, and checking them in that order avoids troubleshooting the wrong system.

1. Check whether the lead reached Telegram

Open the intended Telegram conversation and look for the lead message. Its presence does not identify the exact notification setting at fault, but it tells you to focus first on Telegram and the device. If the message is absent, move to the bot or integration checks below.

  • Message present, no alert: check notification settings, muted chats, and device-level restrictions.
  • Message absent: check whether the lead integration is delivering updates to the bot and whether the server is processing them.

2. Restore phone alerts

Android

Telegram’s notification troubleshooting FAQ and Android notification guidance recommend checking both Telegram’s settings and Android’s controls. Confirm that notifications are enabled for Telegram and that their importance is set high. Then check that the specific conversation is not muted.

  • Confirm Google Play Services are installed.
  • Review Android’s notification priority for Telegram.
  • If battery-saving or task-killer software is present, allow Telegram to run in the background or exempt it from the restriction.
  • On Huawei and Xiaomi devices in particular, check manufacturer settings that may restrict background activity.

Names and locations of these controls vary by Android version and manufacturer; use the device’s Settings search if a label does not match.

iPhone and iPad

Telegram’s iOS notification troubleshooting page recommends confirming notifications are enabled both in Telegram and in iOS Settings. Check that the specific chat is not muted and that Do Not Disturb is not active. If those checks do not help, Telegram suggests closing the app and refreshing its alert-style settings.

3. If a bot should deliver the lead, check its update mode

Telegram bots receive updates through one of two modes: long polling, using getUpdates, or an outgoing webhook, configured with setWebhook. Telegram’s Bots FAQ explains that long polling cannot be used while a webhook is set. First determine which mode the integration expects; changing modes without accounting for this conflict can interrupt update delivery.

For long polling

Check the integration’s polling process and logs to see whether it is requesting updates and handling them successfully. A polling client confirms processed updates by advancing its offset; if it does not, updates may be delivered again rather than treated as confirmed. See Telegram’s guidance on update confirmation.

For webhooks

Call getWebhookInfo and inspect the configured URL, the pending update count, and recent delivery error information. Telegram documents these fields in the Bot API reference. A growing pending count or a recent delivery error is a reason to investigate the endpoint and its server logs.

Check that the endpoint is reachable and that its certificate and webhook configuration meet the current Bot API requirements for setWebhook. Avoid relying on port numbers or setup instructions copied from older guides; consult the maintained API documentation for current requirements.

4. Use the scope of the failure to narrow the cause

  • One chat only: check that conversation’s mute and notification settings.
  • One device only: focus on that device’s notification, focus, battery, or background settings.
  • Several recipients or devices: check whether the message was delivered to the intended Telegram chats and whether a shared integration is failing.
  • Intermittent alerts: note when an alert was missed and compare the time with device restrictions or server-side delivery errors.

5. Escalate with useful details

If the issue remains, Telegram’s notification support manual recommends recording whether alerts never arrive or arrive intermittently, along with relevant logs and the time of an occurrence when available. For Telegram volunteer support, use Settings → Ask a Question, as directed by the Telegram FAQ.

For an integration issue, preserve the relevant polling or webhook errors and server logs. Do not include bot tokens or lead personal data in a public report.
