Some reusable plastic water bottles can go in the dishwasher, but there is no rule that applies to every bottle. Check the care instructions for your exact model and for each part—especially the lid, straw, seals, and filter. If the manufacturer allows dishwasher cleaning, follow its rack and placement directions; when it calls for hand washing, do that instead.
How to tell whether your bottle is dishwasher safe
Look for the care label on the bottle or packaging, consult its manual, or search the manufacturer’s official support page for the exact model. Do not assume a bottle is dishwasher safe just because it is plastic, or because another bottle from the same brand can be washed that way.
Check the instructions for the bottle body and removable parts separately. A cap, straw, seal, or filter may have different care requirements. If the instructions are missing or do not clearly allow dishwasher use, hand washing is the cautious choice.

How to wash and dry the whole bottle
- Identify the model. Check the bottle, packaging, care symbols, manual, or official brand support page.
- Separate parts as instructed. Check care directions for the lid, straw, seals, mouthpiece, and filter. Remove a filter before washing only when the manufacturer directs you to.
- Use the dishwasher only if the instructions allow it. Follow the specified rack and placement. The cited dishwasher-safe examples recommend the top rack and keeping parts away from the heating element.
- Hand wash when required. Use the method and cleaner the manufacturer specifies. For one Brita filtering-bottle variant, Brita directs users to wash the bottle, cap, and straw with mild dish soap, rinse them, and not put the bottle in the dishwasher. Brita bottle care instructions

A material or recycling code does not tell you how to wash a particular bottle. The FDA says BPA is used in polycarbonate plastic and that resin code 7 can indicate a container may be made from BPA-containing plastic. That information concerns material identification, not dishwasher care. Purpose-built reusable bottles are also different from refilling disposable water bottles. Health Canada does not recommend refilling old single-use bottles because improper cleaning can create a microbiological risk; it suggests choosing a wide-neck bottle that can be washed thoroughly with hot, soapy water between uses.
