You can connect Claude Desktop or Claude Code to WordPress using a WordPress username and an Application Password. The documented WordPress MCP setups do not put an Anthropic API key in the WordPress connection settings. That distinction does not mean every Claude-and-WordPress integration works without an Anthropic key, or that a password pasted into client configuration is protected: treat the WordPress credential and its configuration file as secrets.
Choose the WordPress connection that matches your goal
WordPress documents two different MCP routes. One connects a client to the WordPress.org MCP service; the other connects it to abilities exposed by a particular WordPress site through the MCP Adapter. They are not interchangeable, and the WordPress.org route does not automatically grant access to an arbitrary self-hosted site.

Connect Claude to the WordPress.org MCP service
Use this route when you want Claude to interact with the tools documented for WordPress.org’s MCP service. It is not a shortcut to your own site’s posts, settings or plugins.
- Run
npx -y @wporg/mcpas described in the WordPress.org setup guide. - Follow the browser authorization flow. It authorizes your WordPress.org account and creates an Application Password for the MCP connection.
- Choose a supported client, such as Claude Desktop or Claude Code, and complete the guided configuration. If configuring manually, use the WordPress API endpoint and WordPress username and Application Password specified by the guide.
- Keep the generated password private. The guide says it is displayed once. If you authorize again, the existing MCP Application Password is replaced; revoke the connection in WordPress.org account security settings when you no longer need it.
Connect Claude to a WordPress site with the MCP Adapter
Choose this route when Claude needs to work with a specific WordPress install. The MCP Adapter maps registered WordPress Abilities into MCP tools that an AI client can discover and run. Merely installing or configuring a client does not make every site function available: the site must register and expose the abilities needed for the intended tasks. - Confirm that the target site has the MCP Adapter and the relevant abilities registered and available. Check the guide and the site’s WordPress and plugin versions because implementation details and availability can vary.
- Create a dedicated WordPress integration user with only the capabilities required for those abilities. Avoid using an administrator account by default.
- Create an Application Password for that user and record the site’s MCP endpoint. In the client configuration, set
WP_API_URLto that endpoint and provide the WordPress username and Application Password as shown in the adapter guide. - Configure Claude Desktop or Claude Code as described by the guide, then verify that the connection can discover and perform only the intended site actions.
- When the integration is no longer needed, revoke its Application Password and review the abilities and user permissions that were exposed.
Set permissions at the ability level
The Adapter guide recommends checking the minimum WordPress capability needed in each ability’s permission_callback. Do not use unrestricted callbacks for destructive actions, and do not expose powerful abilities to unaudited AI clients. For public MCP endpoints, prefer read-only abilities; monitor and log usage. If the deployment needs a different authentication design, consider custom authentication rather than assuming Application Passwords fit every environment.
Protect the Application Password
A WordPress Application Password is a programmatic API credential associated with a WordPress user. It is separate from that user’s normal password and does not sign in to wp-login.php. WordPress generates each credential for an application, stores it hashed, shows it only once and lets you revoke it individually. WordPress’s guidance is direct: “Operational best practice is to treat Application Passwords like secrets:” Read the Application Passwords handbook for creation and management details.

- Use HTTPS. WordPress Application Password authentication uses HTTP Basic Authentication. Basic Authentication carries reusable credentials, so never send it over unencrypted HTTP. WordPress documents the method in its REST API authentication handbook.
- Use a separate, least-privilege account and credential. Create an Application Password specifically for this integration, attached to a dedicated user with only the capabilities its tasks require. Avoid sharing a personal administrator credential across integrations.
- Treat client configuration as sensitive. A configuration example that contains a username and password is still secret-bearing. Do not commit a live credential to source control or share it in screenshots, logs, issue reports or prompts. Protect copies and backups too.
- Do not assume local storage is encrypted. The WordPress setup documentation shows credentials in client configuration but does not establish a Claude-specific encrypted-at-rest guarantee for configuration files or environment settings. An environment variable is not automatically a secret vault.
- Revoke exposed or unused credentials. If a password leaks or the integration ends, revoke that individual Application Password and create a replacement only if needed. WordPress recommends revoking credentials that are no longer in use.
WordPress also documents masking API-key values and default Application Password values in connector-settings REST responses. That behavior describes those responses; it does not establish how every plugin, WordPress storage location or Claude client protects credentials. The WordPress MCP examples described here authenticate to WordPress with a WordPress username and Application Password. They do not include an Anthropic API key in the WordPress MCP-server settings. This is a statement about those documented configurations—not a guarantee for every architecture that connects Claude and WordPress. A plugin, proxy or custom workflow that calls the Claude API may have a separate credential flow; the WordPress MCP setup instructions do not establish how such a component handles its keys.
