If a UPI payment is pending, failed, or shows a debit without confirmed delivery, first check the payment’s status in the app and your bank account. Then follow the timeline for the type of payment: RBI’s framework sets auto-reversal at T+1 for a person-to-person transfer that cannot be credited, and T+5 for a merchant payment debited without confirmation at the merchant location. If it remains unresolved, report it through the UPI app or your bank and keep the transaction reference.
Check the payment status before trying again
- Open the transaction history in the UPI app you used and select the specific payment. NPCI says transaction history includes past and pending transactions, and its BHIM guidance provides a “report issue” option in the transaction view. NPCI UPI FAQs and BHIM.
- Record the details: displayed status, date and time, amount, payee, and transaction or reference number.
- Check your bank account for a debit or reversal, and ask the recipient or merchant whether they can confirm receipt.
- Do not pay again just because the screen is slow to update. Confirm whether the first transaction is pending, failed, or successful before retrying, to reduce the risk of paying twice.
A debit in your account does not by itself prove that the recipient received the money. For a transfer to a person, the relevant question is whether the beneficiary account was credited. NPCI describes cases in which a beneficiary bank has not sent online credit confirmation as “deemed approved”; if the account was not credited online, it is to be manually processed under applicable RBI guidance. NPCI UPI ecosystem information.
Use the timeline for the kind of payment
The RBI’s failed-transaction framework distinguishes a person-to-person transfer from a merchant payment. Here, T means the transaction date; the circular states limits in days, not a guaranteed number of clock hours.
| Payment and problem | RBI auto-reversal limit | Compensation if the limit is exceeded |
|---|---|---|
| Person-to-person transfer: payer debited, beneficiary account not credited | By T+1 if the beneficiary bank cannot credit the account | ₹100 per day beyond T+1 |
| Merchant payment: account debited, but confirmation not received at the merchant location | Within T+5 | ₹100 per day beyond T+5 |
These limits and compensation amounts come from the Reserve Bank of India’s failed-transaction framework. The framework says the system should apply compensation for delays beyond the applicable limit; it is not a promise that every app will show a separate compensation request. If a transfer to a person is pending or failed
For a debit where the beneficiary account was not credited, the applicable RBI auto-reversal limit is T+1. If the transfer remains pending, the beneficiary has not confirmed receipt, or no reversal appears after that limit, contact your bank or raise an issue in the UPI app with the transaction reference.
If a merchant payment has no confirmation
Check with the merchant whether the payment was received before paying again. For a merchant debit without confirmation at the merchant location, the RBI limit is T+5. NPCI’s help guidance distinguishes pending or successful merchant issues from failed merchant transactions. NPCI UPI customer support.

How to interpret NPCI’s consumer FAQ timing
NPCI’s FAQ says that after a failed payment the money is refunded and advises contacting bank customer support if the refund has not arrived within one hour. Separately, for a pending debit where beneficiary credit is delayed, it says the amount will reach the recipient within 48 hours. Those are consumer FAQ statements, not a single deadline for every case. Apply the RBI T+1 or T+5 limit to the matching transaction type rather than treating one hour or 48 hours as a universal guarantee. NPCI UPI FAQs.
Report an unresolved payment and track the response
- Raise the issue in the UPI app using the specific transaction’s help, report-issue, or grievance option, if available.
- Contact your bank with the transaction reference if the app does not resolve the issue or you need help identifying the status.
- Use NPCI’s complaint facility to check the financial transaction’s status or register a complaint with the relevant member institution. NPCI says that institution is responsible for resolving it. NPCI UPI complaint facility.
- Keep a record of the complaint number, relevant app screenshots or bank statement entry, contact date, and any response. These can help you follow up; banks may use different forms and processes.
If the bank or other regulated entity has not replied within the applicable period, or you are dissatisfied with its response or resolution, the RBI FAQ describes escalation under the Reserve Bank–Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026. It took effect on July 1, 2026, replacing the 2021 scheme for new matters. Check RBI’s current filing instructions before submitting a complaint.
