Then schedule Focus, Do Not Disturb, or a sleep mode for times you want fewer interruptions. The exact controls depend on your phone, wearable, and model.
Choose what should reach your wrist
Before changing settings, decide which alerts deserve an immediate wrist interruption. You might keep calls or messages from selected people and alerts from essential apps, while removing social, shopping, news, or other low-priority app notifications. This is a practical way to tailor your setup, not a clinically tested threshold for avoiding overwhelm.
For each app, choose among three outcomes where your device supports them: an alert on the wrist, quiet delivery to the phone’s notification centre, or no notification. App-level filtering is usually the most direct way to reduce wrist interruptions without necessarily losing the alert everywhere.
Turn off app notifications on Apple Watch
- Review the iPhone settings. On iPhone, open Settings → Notifications, choose an app, and select where its alerts appear. Apple Watch app notification settings are in the Watch app → My Watch → Notifications. Depending on the app, you can allow alerts, send them to Notification Centre without a watch alert, or turn them off. See Apple’s notification setup guidance.
- Check where alerts are going. By default, notifications go to either the Apple Watch or iPhone, not both. When the iPhone is unlocked, alerts go to the iPhone; when it is locked or asleep, they go to the watch unless the watch is locked. This routing can make a notification seem to have disappeared from the watch when it is actually appearing on the phone.
- Make a quiet schedule with Focus. Configure Focus to allow chosen people or apps and schedule it for particular times or actions. Check Share Across Devices if you want the Focus to apply across paired Apple devices. Apple’s settings and descriptions are in its Apple Watch guide to silencing notifications.
Pick the Apple quiet mode that matches the problem
- Focus: Use it for a tailored quiet period with configured exceptions and schedules.
- Do Not Disturb: Use it when you want broad silencing; it turns off sounds and haptics.
- Silent Mode: Mutes sounds, but haptics may remain.
- Theater Mode: Keeps the display dark, but haptics may remain.
These modes affect different signals, so muting sound alone may not stop wrist vibrations.

Filter notifications on Garmin watches
Garmin controls vary by watch and phone. Garmin offers on-device app controls only on compatible models; do not assume that every Garmin watch can independently filter every phone app. On iOS, notification forwarding depends on the phone’s app notification settings, including whether the app can deliver to Notification Center. Check Garmin’s notification setup guidance for the options supported by your device and phone.
Set sleep quieting on a vívoactive 6
The vívoactive 6 Owner’s Manual, version 7 (September 2026), says Do Not Disturb turns off vibrations and the display for alerts and notifications. It also gives this model-specific route for disabling smart notifications during sleep hours: Focus Modes → Sleep → Smart Notifications → Off. See the vívoactive 6 manual. Other Garmin models may use different menus or controls; check the manual for your watch rather than relying on this path.

Garmin activity alerts are configured per activity and are not supported for every activity. Check the workout or activity settings for alerts you can disable or remove; Garmin explains the process in its guide to setting an activity alert.
