To make a fitness tracker last longer between charges, start with the features that keep its screen, GPS, wireless connections, and sensors active. Lower screen brightness, reduce screen wake-ups, trim unneeded notifications, and use power-saving settings when their measurement trade-offs are acceptable. The exact controls vary by model, so use your manufacturer’s instructions for the device you own.

Which settings should you check first?

Change one setting at a time and pay attention to whether it affects a feature you rely on. There is no single battery control that applies to every tracker; available settings differ by brand, model, and software version.

Reduce screen use

  • Lower display brightness if your tracker lets you adjust it.
  • Shorten the screen timeout or reduce how often the display wakes.
  • Turn off Always-on Display if supported and you are comfortable checking the screen with a gesture or button instead.

These changes trade at-a-glance convenience for less display activity. Garmin’s fēnix E manual recommends reducing screen timeout, while Fitbit and Apple document Always-on Display controls on certain devices. Follow the instructions for your model: Garmin fēnix E battery tips, Fitbit battery guidance, and Apple Watch battery guidance.

Keep only the notifications you need

Disable wrist notifications from apps that do not need to interrupt you. If your tracker offers audio and vibration alerts, Garmin advises that using both can consume more power; choosing one may reduce that load. Garmin also recommends limiting phone notifications. Samsung provides app-notification management for Galaxy Watch users. These paths and controls vary, so check the relevant manufacturer instructions: Garmin battery-drain guidance, Garmin fēnix E battery tips, and Samsung Galaxy Watch battery tips.

What features can drain battery during workouts?

GPS use

GPS tracking can add to battery use, particularly during outdoor workouts. Keep it enabled when you need route or location data; turning it off or using a different GPS arrangement may mean less complete location tracking. Fitbit says Charge 4, Charge 5, and Charge 6 can use the GPS sensors of a nearby phone. That option is specific to those models, not a universal tracker setting. See Fitbit’s battery guidance for the supported-device details.

Power-saving modes and sensor frequency

A power-saving mode may conserve charge by switching off features or collecting some measurements less often. On Apple Watch, Low Power Mode disables selected functions, including Always-on Display, certain background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements, and heart-rate notifications. During outdoor walking, running, or hiking workouts, Apple says the mode takes fewer GPS and heart-rate readings while active. That can reduce measurement frequency, so consider whether the less frequent data is suitable for the workout. Details are in Apple’s Apple Watch battery guidance.

Which connected features should you switch off?

Review features that keep your tracker connected or active, such as calls, texting, music control, weather updates, and installed watch faces, apps, widgets, or data fields. Garmin notes that sustained use of these features, and some Connect IQ content, may increase battery drain. Disable or remove only the features you do not use; doing so can mean fewer smart functions or less convenient access to information. See Garmin’s battery-drain guidance.

Why is the battery draining faster than it used to?

First check whether you recently enabled a screen, notification, GPS, or connected feature that keeps the device more active. If runtime has changed substantially despite reviewing settings, follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting or service route rather than assuming the battery is user-replaceable.

For Apple Watch owners

Apple says Apple Watch is most efficient when connected to its paired iPhone over Bluetooth, so keep the devices within range when battery life is a priority. If Battery Health reports “Battery Needs Service,” Apple advises contacting Apple Support. These recommendations apply to Apple Watch, not other trackers. See Apple’s battery-drain troubleshooting guidance.

How much extra battery life can these changes provide?

There is no reliable universal number of extra hours or days to expect. The cited manufacturer guidance describes settings that can affect battery use, but does not provide a cross-device test or guarantee for the gain from any one adjustment. Garmin’s 30 April 2025 blog says Garmin fitness and outdoor watches should get about a week at minimum before recharging, but that is Garmin-specific context—not a benchmark for all trackers or a prediction of the improvement from changing settings. Garmin notes that model features such as GPS and conservation functions affect runtime: Garmin’s battery-life overview.
