There is no single best audio codec for every use. Vorbis is generally more efficient than MP3 at similar perceived quality, Opus is designed for speech, music, and low-delay applications, and MP3 remains a practical choice for broadly shared files. AAC may suit platforms whose media stacks support it well. The right choice depends on the encoder, bitrate, content, playback device, and container—not just the file extension.

First, Ogg is not the same thing as Vorbis

Ogg is a container: it packages media data. Vorbis and Opus are audio codecs, which encode and decode the sound. An .ogg extension therefore does not, by itself, tell you which codec is inside. The IETF’s RFC 7845 specifies how Opus is carried in Ogg and recommends the .opus extension for an Ogg Opus file.

  • Vorbis: an audio codec commonly carried in Ogg or WebM.
  • Opus: an audio codec that can be carried in Ogg, WebM, or MP4, with Ogg Opus guidance defined by RFC 7845.
  • MP3: MPEG-1 Audio Layer III; a standalone MP3 file is essentially a stream of MP3 frames and typically uses .mp3.
  • AAC: an audio codec often used in MPEG-4 contexts. The container and the platform’s media support both matter.

For these codec and container distinctions, see MDN’s audio codec guide.

Which codec sounds best?

Quality comparisons only mean something when they specify the bitrate, encoder, audio content, and listening-test conditions. A codec name alone cannot establish which file will sound better, and a bitrate that works well for one encoder or kind of audio may not produce the same result with another.

The Opus project’s comparison page catalogs listening tests rather than establishing a universal ranking. For example, it describes a 48 kHz stereo-music ABC/HR test at 64 kb/s comparing Opus, Vorbis, and HE-AAC, and a separate 96 kb/s test comparing Opus, Vorbis, and LC-AAC, with MP3 tested at 136 kb/s. Because the codecs were not all tested at one common bitrate in these comparisons, they do not support a simple equal-bitrate winner claim. The project also cautions that its overview graphic should not be used to extract exact quality at a particular bitrate.

A 2016 paper by Jean-Marc Valin, Gregory Maxwell, Timothy B. Terriberry, and Koen Vos describes Opus’s design and reports a subjective result from that paper’s particular evaluation. It is evidence about that test, its encoders, and its conditions—not a current, universal shootout. See the paper.

Which makes the smallest files?

At similar perceived quality, MDN describes Vorbis as generally more efficient than MP3 in size and bitrate. That is a broad comparison, not a fixed size ratio: the actual result depends on the encoder, settings, and audio being encoded.

There is no established fixed bitrate equivalence or file-size ratio that applies across Vorbis, MP3, AAC, and Opus for every music and speech workload. The rates in the Opus project’s cited listening tests are test conditions, not universal bitrate recommendations. To compare files for your own use, encode the same source with the encoders and settings you are considering, then compare listening quality and output size.

How do the codecs differ in practical use?

Codec Useful distinction Consider it when
Vorbis MDN describes it as generally more efficient than MP3 at similar perceived quality; actual results vary by encoder and settings. You want an alternative to MP3 and have confirmed the target players support Vorbis in the chosen container.
MP3 A long-established format, but playback still depends on support in the target software or device. You are sharing a legacy audio file and compatibility with the intended playback environment is the priority.
AAC A codec used in MPEG-4 contexts; support depends on the platform’s media stack and container. Your target devices or delivery workflow support the chosen AAC/container combination.
Opus Designed for speech and music, including real-time, low-delay applications; supports variable bitrate. You need interactive voice, conferencing, in-game chat, or another low-delay application, subject to end-to-end support.

The Opus project describes applications ranging from voice over IP and videoconferencing to in-game chat and remote live music performances. Its project page identifies Opus 1.6.1 as released January 14, 2026. The design goals are not a guarantee that every device or app can play every Opus file.

Will Ogg Vorbis or Opus play in your browser or on Android?

Compatibility is a combination of codec, container, platform version, and playback software. The following is a snapshot of the platform documentation checked October 4, 2026; browser and operating-system support can change.

Browsers

MDN’s container support table lists Opus in Ogg for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari, while Vorbis in Ogg is listed for Firefox and Safari. MDN notes that Safari 18.4 and later added Opus and Vorbis support in Ogg on macOS 15.4+, iOS 18.4+, iPadOS 18.4+, and visionOS 2.4+. Support in another container may differ, so check the target browser and container rather than relying on the codec name alone.

Android

Android’s supported media formats table lists MP3 decoding, Vorbis decoding in Ogg, and Opus in Ogg and other containers. It lists Android 5.0+ for Opus in Ogg and WebM paths, and Android 10+ for certain MPEG-4 and Matroska paths. This is platform documentation, not a guarantee that every third-party player or device will support every combination.

How should you choose?

  • For interactive voice or low-delay streaming: Opus is a strong technical fit because it is designed for real-time use and supports speech and music. Confirm that every part of the playback or communications chain supports it.
  • For web audio: choose formats based on the browsers and containers your audience uses, and test the actual files in those versions. An .ogg extension alone does not identify the codec.
  • For a broadly shared legacy file: MP3 can be a practical compatibility choice, but check the particular software or device that must play it.
  • For a smaller alternative to MP3: Vorbis has a documented general efficiency advantage at similar perceived quality, but compare your own encoder settings and content before assuming a particular size saving.
  • When transcoding: keep a higher-quality source. Converting between lossy formats can discard additional audio information; avoid repeated lossy conversions when possible.

In any comparison, consider perceived quality at the actual bitrate and encoder, output size for the same content and duration, delay requirements, target platform/container support, and whether the file will be transcoded.
