To limit Claude’s WordPress access, connect it through a dedicated WordPress user with only the capabilities required for the work. Use an Application Password as that user’s separate API credential, and—if the connection uses MCP—expose only the needed abilities and check each ability’s permissions. The password does not create a new role or grant administrator access.

How WordPress limits what Claude can do

WordPress authenticates API requests as a user. That user’s role supplies capabilities—permissions such as reading, editing, or publishing content—which constrain what authenticated requests can do. Roles are bundles of capabilities, not an independent security boundary guaranteed by their names: plugins and custom code can change them. See WordPress Roles and Capabilities.

An Application Password is a credential associated with a particular WordPress user. It authenticates API access as that user; it does not add capabilities or grant authority separate from the user’s permissions. For an MCP connection, the server’s exposed abilities add another practical boundary: configure only what is needed and have each ability check the minimum required capability. WordPress recommends a specific user with limited capabilities for production MCP use. See the WordPress MCP Adapter guidance.

Choose a WordPress role for the actual tasks

Start with the actions Claude needs, not a role name or an assumption that an AI connection needs administrator access. WordPress documents six predefined roles. Their descriptions below refer to default behavior; a site’s plugins, custom code, and configuration can change capabilities. Multisite also has network-level permissions, including the Super Admin role.

Default role Documented scope relevant to a connection
Subscriber Only the read capability in documented defaults.
Contributor Can write and manage their own posts, but cannot publish them.
Author Can publish and manage their own posts.
Editor Can publish and manage posts, including other users’ posts.
Administrator Has access to administration features on a single site.
Super Admin Has network administration access in Multisite.

Use the narrowest account that covers the approved workflow. Read-only work may call for a user with read access; drafting without publishing calls for different capabilities than publishing or managing other users’ content. Media uploads and site administration are separate needs to verify rather than assume. If the built-in roles do not fit, use a carefully configured role where appropriate and verify the resulting capabilities.

Connect Claude to WordPress with a dedicated user

  1. List the permitted work. Decide whether the connection may read content, draft or edit posts, publish, upload media, or perform a specific site operation. Do not begin by granting administrator access.
  2. Create or select a dedicated WordPress user. Assign a role whose capabilities cover those tasks, and avoid reusing a personal administrator account. Check the site’s effective capabilities, especially if plugins or custom code affect roles.
  3. Choose a compatible connection method. For an MCP connection, use a server or adapter compatible with the site and Claude client, and expose only the abilities required. The WordPress.org MCP Server documented in the Plugin Handbook is for WordPress.org Plugin Directory tasks; it is distinct from connecting Claude to an independently hosted WordPress site. Consult the WordPress.org MCP Server instructions for that specific use.
  4. Generate an Application Password if the selected connection uses one. In wp-admin, open the dedicated user’s profile and find Application Passwords. Name the credential for the integration and generate it. WordPress displays the generated password only once, so copy it directly into the client’s secure configuration.
  5. Configure the client using the selected server’s instructions. Provide the server endpoint and the dedicated user’s WordPress username and generated Application Password when requested. Keep the secret private and send API authentication only over HTTPS.
  6. Check both allowed and denied actions. Confirm that the connection can complete its intended task and cannot perform work outside its approved scope. For MCP, inspect the exposed abilities and each ability’s permission checks as well as the WordPress user’s capabilities.
  7. Revoke access when it is no longer needed. In the user profile’s Application Passwords section, review and revoke the integration’s individual credential when retiring it or responding to suspected exposure.

Protect and troubleshoot the Application Password

WordPress introduced Application Passwords in version 5.6 in December 2020 for programmatic API authentication, including REST API use. They are stored hashed, can be revoked individually, and cannot be used for interactive login at wp-login.php. Availability is normally tied to HTTPS, but site filters or other code can change or disable it. WordPress describes their use with HTTP Basic Authentication and warns that credentials can be intercepted if sent without encryption. Read the current Application Passwords documentation.

  • HARDWARE 2FA AND MFA: FIDO Alliance Certified FIDO2 v2.1 with CTAP2 plus legacy U2F and CTAP1 for strong two-factor login and passwordless sign-in on services that support security keys
  • BUILDING ACCESS ON ONE CARD: MIFARE DESFire EV2 4K applet with AES encryption adds office door and physical access control alongside digital authentication
  • CERTIFIED SECURE ELEMENT: An NXP Common Criteria EAL6+ certified secure controller and Java Card platform protects your keys on a tamper-resistant chip
  • DUAL INTERFACE SMART CARD: Contactless NFC ISO 14443 plus ISO 7816 contact reader support in an ISO 7810 ID-1 format that is passive and needs no battery
  • SWISS ENGINEERED DESIGN: Built by Cryptnox as a single card for authentication and access control and backed by a 2 year warranty
  • Never publish or share the generated secret. Treat it as an API credential for the associated user.
  • If authentication fails, verify that the request uses HTTPS, the client is using the Application Password rather than the user’s normal login password, and the server or proxy is forwarding the Authorization header. Some proxies or clients strip that header.
  • Do not broaden permissions to fix an authentication problem. First check HTTPS detection, credential handling, and header forwarding; authentication and authorization are separate issues.

Keep MCP abilities within the same permission boundary

A limited WordPress user is not sufficient if an MCP server exposes powerful operations without appropriate checks. For a custom MCP integration, define only the abilities the workflow requires and verify that each ability’s permission callback checks the relevant minimum capability. Avoid exposing destructive or high-impact actions unless they are necessary and properly guarded. The Adapter’s official guidance discusses this capability-based approach.
